Nothing wrong with you woodwork mate, yes get the door frame in and build the stud wall to it 👌👍, regarding the stone, nice to look at but little function in a warm room 🙈
-
When my brother bought his house, over 25 years ago, he asked me about stripping and reverting his roof as from the loft you can see daylight spots in many places, however when it rains it never leaks 🤷♂️ so I said wait till it leaks and it never has 🤣
-
Walking on a roof is perfectly acceptable and I have done a great number. If your roof is leaking then the felt is knackered. The mortaring they have done is crap (in my opinion) the ridge and hip tiles should have been lifted, cleaned then re bedded on new motor, not buttered as they have done. If I had quoted for this I would have looked inside your loft to assess the felt condition and possibly recommended strip and re felt and batten using the same tiles if they were ok. I have done this on numerous houses. Best of luck getting a cowboy to give you’re money back I am afraid

I have done a few loft conversions for extra space not bedrooms but used a friendly SE to advise me. On a similar loft I removed those intrusive timbers but replaced them first with purlins, i have even used glulams BUT, you must get proper structural advise or you could cause damage that your house insurance will not cover.

@Barking99, you keep saying you disagree with the planners so your only course of action, that I and others have said is to appeal, that’s why the appeal procedure exists. You can argue with the planners till the cows come home but that will do no good. Drag it out as long as possible, go to appeal and by that time the hedge will have grown. I have fought planners a few times as their rules are often grey areas open to interpretation so don’t get me wrong they can be a nightmare. If you do go to appeal and win (and I find the appeal officers are far more practical than planners) you can give them the bird 🖕
-
As Nick says, if not out in the rain I don’t think it will be a problem and I have used non galv in the past.
-
I think the planners just don’t like the harsh look of the fence, yes it’s mad that a hedge just as tall does not need planning but then again a hedge is not “harsh”, i would go for appeal ( I did and won) and if nothing else it delays the outcome and more time for the hedge to grow (get a hosepipe on it 😇).

It doesn’t, and that’s not what I said That’s what I said. I agree 👍 I agree, which is why I am keeping my old (13 year) diesel car running. I cannot afford an EV and I am not convinced digging up rare earth materials by third world peoples is fair to anyone. 🤷♂️
-
So, saying if they do nothing we won’t do anything is not going to benefit anyone anywhere 🤷♂️. I agree that we need to adapt to change, Monty Dan ( tv gardener) for example says we should plant for a hotter dryer climate and not water plants so often. If we all do a little bit we all benefit.
-
I disagree, it was the west that started the pollution, (Industrial Revolution) so we need to lead with becoming clean.
-
That will make people take notice of the EPC when they buy a house.
-
Attenborough has being saying that for years.

+1 to the above, insulate, insulate, insulate (and airtight) then whatever source your heat (preferably ASHP) your running costs will me minimal.
-
My ASHP could but only because I had a DHW cylinder that stored hot water and frankly it delivered hot water faster than my current combi boiler🤷♂️.
-
Funnily enough I was watching back episodes of “house of cards” on Netflix last night and the president was told he was not going to be able to run in the next elections so he decided to do things that benefitted the country rather than get votes 🤷♂️
-
I think I have said this before, my son works for Ford and they have been told not to take EV,s back in part exchange as there is a glut of them as so many people are going back to ICE because of a lack of range and charging points. I think there needs to be other options like non oil fuels. Yesterday I drove through Bristol where row after row of terraced houses exists where charging at home is impossible and even parking outside your home is impossible, how are these people going to use EV,s 🤷♂️

Personally I like oak to look like it should and was when new, I have seen various beams sand or bead blasted and I really like that look.

Garden Outbuilding - Is this right?
joe90 replied to J4mes's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
I have just put up a log effect garage, 44mm timber and it looks really good, pretty in fact which is nice when it’s in your garden, I can recommend “quick garden” and I am contemplating a garden sun room next year. Also I will be using ground screws for mine, no foundations. Even the 44mm timber has some insulating factors and as said above why would you insulate a gym, you will be working up a sweat. Here is an example. https://www.quick-garden.co.uk/summer-house-clockhouse-4m-x-3m-13x10-ft-44-mm.html -
More foundation fun - straw bale garden room on clay

Yes keeping the bales dry during building is a big problem, when I was planning building a bale house years ago I thought of building a scaffold outer with tin roof and sheeting first and effectively building “indoors”, I even priced up buying the scaffold (second hand) and was told as long as I kept the put locks oiled I could sell it afterwards with little loss. I know this is not possible for yours but keeping it dry during the build is very important IMO. -
I did exactly this, dead easy and quicker and less fuss than building with blocks.

How to improve the look of this dodgy workmanship
joe90 replied to Monz87's topic in Bricklaying, Blockwork & Mortar
A centre punch or nail punch would be my go to, an SDS chisel is way to aggressive and large IMO. -
So it didnt fail (break),as said above there needs to be ribs or something for the rubber pipe to grip on.
-
@Pocster in what way did it fail?, just come off or break?
