The problem with mineral wool batts is you have no way of keeping the batts on the inner face to allow for the cavity next to the outer skin.

Nah, it will just bounce off. When I started my build I had to remove a fairly large tree and stump, even with a 7.5 ton JCB I was amazed at how hard it was to remove it from the ground.

More foundation fun - straw bale garden room on clay
joe90 replied to Nick Thomas's topic in Foundations
How do you get on with youre neighbours?, it’s only them that will dob you in it, I am yet to come across council officials that measure height unless a complaint is received. Great to see your progress, well done, slightly jealous as straw bale construction was my plan years ago and I helped on a couple of house builds. I recently pointed an old garden stone wall in lime and really impressed with its plasticity (compared to cement). No idea of the mix, it was left over from a worker next door re rendering an old cottage. Watching many programmes and articles on straw bale building I was impressed with spraying the line render on, gets into the straw very well but maybe OTT for your little project. -
Did they put them back?

Screws will not cause a squeak if tight, on my last build all the l first floor was glued and only screwed along one wall to start and completely silent,

Drill a hole in the center with a spade bit and then drill holes roughly 8 inches (20 cm) to 10 inches (25 cm) deep in the top of the stump. Fill the holes with potassium nitrate and then pour hot water into the holes to dissolve the powder. Build a teepee of wood around the stump and set it on fire. 🤷♂️

My build was a few miles away from the north Devon coast so near the Atlantic. No structural warranty, I had intended to have an insulated raft but was in hospital when the builder was doing it so had insulation on top of the raft then 70mm flowing screed with UFH pipes within it so heat up times should be a little quicker. note, if you put a @ in front of my name and choose from the drop down I will be informed you have quoted me 👍

Well you can get wood carving blades for angle grinders (basically small circular saw blades) and I used one to trim a plastic drain, when I finished I went to put it down but the cord got cought on something and it turned back on my left hand almost taking my thumb off 😱, they managed to sew it back on but tendon damage has restricted its movement and it aches in the cold so the moral is always wait for the blade to stop before putting it down.

Gosh I have used mine on up to 10” diameter green wood 🤷♂️, as @Russell griffiths says above then cut the fence away and use a chainsaw.

I am about to put electric gates in and my motor is fused at 3 amp, not 13 amp. (But only 10m distance).

I used mineral batts in a full fill 200mm cavity, brick outer skin, the west wall facing the sea did get wet and whilst core drilling for the ASHP the brick was wet right through but the mineral wool had not absorbed any wet. The batts had a bba cert for full fill but as a preventative measure I treated the wall with water proofer and rain ran off it like glass afterwards. Rendering should negate the need to waterproof like I did.

+1 to tongue and groove OSB and laid with d4 glue and screws, completely silent!!! Most floorboard floors squeak because the board shrinks thickness wise and the nail is no longer tight and the squeak is the board going up and down the nail, I have silenced many a floorboard by punching existing nails tighter into the boards.

Welcome, We await pics and plans 👍

I would but some people don’t (my daughter loves walking bare footed), also grow thyme through the grids and smell it every time you walk on it 👍

+1 to the above (new build) .

And no ongoing monthly gas payments as well 👍.

It’s all looking very good, well done, as a lover of old things (cottage etc) i was surprised that I like the look of the metal grids with gravel under/around to grow stuff in, yes need some shoes/slippers, but very long lasting (not like wooden decking).

Just found in tinternet….. If you are providing domestic accommodation to an employee to make running the business easier, any repair and maintenance costs to the farmworker's cottage is a cost that is wholly for business purposes. Where the accommodation is provided to the farmworker free of rent, 100% of input VAT on expenses can be reclaimed.

Ha, I use vinegar and find it quite good (and cheap) Glad to hear this 👍
