No. 'A' grade is almost irrelevant: it's the depth of the shelving - and the support it gets - that counts; 15mm will sag with the average amount of stuff families cram into a wardrobe. Thats why we use the Elfa storage system now - you can't cram stuff in that system without it being obvious that that's what you have done. We are retired / retiring and trying hard to downsize everything. Our family has 'disappeared', all three of them have their own houses now. Thank goodness. There is lots of advice on YooChube ....

Very interesting post @SteamyTea .....

Here is the list of approved stockists who, according to the SunAmp website The key term is Approved Stockists. My Sunamp was installed by an Approved Stockist. Every bit of technical information I needed was given to me by the stockist.

Whats modulation please? I have an EDDI too - how, using the EDDI , do you specify a limit to be drawn from the grid ( in your case 2Kw) ? I merely press Boost and let it run for an hour. I have no idea how much that draws ..... but then I do know that two successive boosts allow us to shower and bathe from cold.

Exactly what we're doing. I realise that we are over-privileged in self build terms: all I've done for the last eight years is get up and try to get on with the build. We've had some horrible lows - but some very heady moments too. It takes focus, persistence and a rock-solid partnership. There comes a stage when you are so committed to the project (sunk costs, emotional and financial) that you just can't stop.

You might like to have a look at a series of posts by @VIPMan. His project is local to us (Lancaster). We're not all that far up the M6. You might like to PM him. I'm almost sure he'd be pleased to talk to you about his experience - and maybe suggest a visit. The project was superb - I visited a couple of times.

That comment smacked me on the face like a wet fish. Bang on. -
In this thread @Conor and @IanR helped my thinking about how to build a proper threshold across what appears to me to be a Really-Easy-To-Cock-up-Expanse-Of-EPS. Two full years later, I'm getting roundtoit. ( Besting @Onoff by a fair bit I expect - 2 years FFS) @IanR suggests some sort of reinforcement (in his case) using GRP. @Conorsuggests a concrete nosing bridging the EPS...... like this perhaps? This is what I'm thinking might work; I'm thinking a metal slot-drain embedded in a concrete 'jacket' . I have a 'feeling' that the left-hand bit of concrete needs to be big enough to support one complete (shortish) flag stone. My questions are: does there need to be a liner between the EPS and the concrete? DPM for example? the width of the concrete to the right hand side of the slot-drain: 100 mm ? how much concrete under the bottom of the slot drain? 50mm ? In the research I did for this post I bumped into this YT video At about 6:30 the author suggests an insulation strip is added like this ( see the middle arrow) I have a feeling that might be a good idea. Any thoughts welcome Thanks @Conor, @IanR - I do think about what you say ...... Ian

When can you move into a new build?

Anytime. But. Read this -
Well , since I built in my own backyard, I suppose I am. You?

Who knew - you can get Tupperware slates. Bloody good idea. They'll go in the dishwasher. Tops!

@Alan Ambrose, have you had a read of this thread ? Apologies if you have: but it seems to me that that discussion will help you. I may have missed something in my haste this morning ....

Yes. Reading between the lines, you might need to consider creating a safe area below the window with HERAS perhaps? Gravity and all that ....

There, you've done your Due Diligence. Excellent. Now summarise all the local evidence online, know each case in detail. Then wait for the feedback. Know the authors of each report. They'll each have their own style. Your rebuttal (of negative feedback) will then write itself. Make a tight well-argued evidence based rebuttal and the Planning Officer sees you as a less easy target. And so thinks twice. Exactly what you need Best of luck Ian

We're keen to use Eco500 Grass Grid on our drive /car parking area. Before pressing the 'Add To Cart ' button, I thought it best to ask here if anyone has used this stuff on their drive? And whether there are any gottchas .... Thanks in advance Ian

Foundations - when does "original ground" become original?
ToughButterCup replied to kandgmitchell's topic in Foundations
£1200 ish I think. The key value is that other professionals in the build workflow (in our case at least) required the Groundsure report. It helped with the foundation design and the groundworks design. -
Is it possible to lift a right of way?
ToughButterCup replied to success1980's topic in Party Wall & Property Legal Issues
Yes. In theory. But there are people like me who feel it is their job to walk each local footpath, once a year and register the fact that the footpath is open. Your footpath may well be one of those that have been 'walked' and registered. Unless you have evidence that your footpath has never been used, no further action can be taken. The local answer to that problem taken by some farmers create all sorts of obstructions that make it at best difficult, and sometimes impossible to walk a footpath. Thus the path lapses into disuse. And when that has happened for long enough, they can apply to have it removed from the register. There is a pragmatic approach. Apply to have the footpath re-routed. In your case the next question is where to? Contact your local Footpaths Officer for advice. -
Foundations - when does "original ground" become original?
ToughButterCup replied to kandgmitchell's topic in Foundations
I don't know the answer to your question. I think, while interesting, your question could be reformulated. Can I suggest you have the ground surveyed - so you can get a good indication of what will be needed for the foundation design? Your ground sounds much like ours - possibly glacial till. 8 cores (vertical soil profiles) didn't cost all that much. The results were used by the piling company and the groundworkers. A ground condition survey of some sort almost always reduces risk, and may be a requirement of Building Control and others. -
We took his advice too. We found that in addition to extraction (industrial hoover) we needed to take the table saw outside and work with our backs to the wind. Being back-to-the-wind was not always possible : and that was enough to start both of us coughing.

You want to cut insulation? Get a teenager. Give it loads of PPE. Go on holiday yourself. Come back when the teenager has stopped coughing.

I have a spare Tin Hat if you need one.....😑
