  1. Claim it back. And write your Planner a hand-written thank you letter (irrespective of the outcome). A balanced , but fair approach, I think.
  2. We had one of those invoices. For £8000. A polite request for an itemised invoice elicited the response (word for word) "I don't see why I should", even though the builder had agreed to provide a breakdown under the headings provided by the Quantity Surveyor. The invoice remains unpaid two years later. No follow up, no Final Demand, no Letter Before Action. How big is the wall?
  3. I measure with a tape and a laser (where possible), and halve the difference ( 1 or 2 mm sometimes). But I always trust a steel rule - especially over a laser.

  5. Ah, Andy, now I know what to search for.... thanks, ian
  6. Look, I'll come clean: this is an embarrasing question to have to ask. I have a done quite a bit of research - and I read the words on the pages, but my head sees fog. I love the idea of Indicator Switches. They tell eejits like me that - when lit - something is happening. Current is flowing. Situation normal, everybody's happy. And I just luuuuurvvvv the Scolmore range of indicators (others are available I'll bet - but you need to ask @Onoff, @JSHarris, or @ProDave). What about a more useful type of indicator switch, eh? What about one which lights up when something FAILS ? Like (say) the MVHR is drunk and refusing to fight. Or the freezer's refusing to freeze. I suppose what I really mean is when those things don't have electricity for some reason ... like when their RCBO has tripped. What I'd like is a simple visual warning that all's not well. Is there an indicator light for that type of thing? Or maybe you can wire any indicator light to illuminate when the circuit it protects (?) fails? Wish I'd paid more attention in Physics lessons.?
  7. Find a tame window fitter. Follow him round for a bit. Watch, learn, scavenge.
  8. And all because of one phrase in one sentence in Planning Law (para 11 here) ' ... the presumption in favour of sustainable development ...'
  9. Got a few cats? It's about 15 Watts a cat innit? A dog maybe 30 - 50 Watts. Put their beds close to any potential airflow round the doors.... Well on the way to smelly warmth.
  10. Have you tried asking for quotes?
  11. Have you asked for quotes? I suspect that price will be very sensitive to local factors .

  13. And still they come, people Hell bent on skiing in front of an avalanche. Hell bent on living the nightmare. But we need, @SuperJohnG , posts like yours. Post like that remind me (us) of how I felt, how we felt. Man, I badly need to tap into that feeling today. So, thanks very much. Plan, plan, plan - that's the one. Coupled with network, network, network. You sound like a really well-organised family. Now, you just need make a bit more of your own luck . Look after yourselves. Ian
  14. "Naasah, yer wunt 10kW mate ... 's wot vey all 'ave round yur...... 10kW - at least."
  15. ?? Now, I need to find a church roof ... somewhere local will do ....
  16. The drawing is the Full Monty as it were (when the cladding is on). The photo is what's there now.
  17. The kind interpretation: its not their fault: the insulation is exposed. The harsh interpretation, the design wasn't fully thought through. Have a look ... Schematically, it looks like this The red dot area is my concern. That little bit of insulation seems to attract them - funny type of roughage innit? Anyhoo, if the chuck's don't eat it rodents will. How do I protect that 150mm gap from the local Random Ravenous Rodent ?
  18. Christmas present from Faye, was it?
  19. Don't do it mate. They only give you a false sense of confidence ?
  20. There's a Kevin What's His Face program about someone who did exactly what you want to do ... if I can I'll look it up. The builder built a stunning house - he'd lived (well, camped would be a better way of putting it) on site for several years. The Planning Conditions imposed on the owner were eye-wateringly restrictive. Among other things, he wasn't allowed sell the property. Mind you , @Waterworks, come to Wyre Borough, buy yourself a field with some trees in it - and move in. The guy next door to me - 25meters away - has done exactly that. Discharges human waste to ground. No treatment system - at all. Here it is (the waste) - you can see it from space: you can see my place being built just to the North. Unfortunately, Street View is not as up to date as the satellite view. All he has to put up with is the occasional visit from the Council. And that gets sorted by a humungous gate and Rhodesian Ridgeback dog. Simples.
  21. Just for completeness, where are your foul drain runs?
