An update on this thread. I made up a dilute solution of household bleach in a spray bottle today, as per Jeremy's example. I gave a little squib to clean all the toilet bowls but the most interesting effect was on the cistern without the flush plate. I gave a couple of sprays directly into the cistern and much of the snotty slime was gone in a matter of hours, so it seems an easy one to solve.

The Quooker doesn't soften, it filters.

Complete U turn from approved design
vivienz replied to Coops's topic in New House & Self Build Design
We're not in a conservation area but it's a very rural location. The plot came with PP for a traditional Edwardian style 1.5 storey house. Had a chat with the planning officer, who said that he greatly disliked pastiche design, prior to putting in for our completely different contemporary design. It passed first time with minimal conditions. Don't assume that because all around is old and traditional that the planners want more of the same.- 6 replies

Here you go, @nod This should give you the info you need. We're about 4 months on now with ours and I am considering switching to the house softened water. We set the filter to the hardness level indicated but we have a slight bit of leakage from the tap and at the base it's leaving a trace of limescale so I assume the filter isn't as effective as the water softener. I will turn up the filtration level for the life of this filter but after that, I think it's simpler to just use softened water.

I can smell the jealous vitriol all the way across in Dorset!

You can run it from softened water but Quooker specifically recommend the filter.

I think it is a couple of times per year, depending on water hardness. I will check in my info this evening, unless someone responds earlier.

Urgent MVHR help needed
vivienz replied to vivienz's topic in Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR)
Sort of. It does seem to be some sort of electronics problem and the manufacturer is sending a load of spares out on Monday so that I can get my electrician to swap them around and see if this works. It has taken much longer than I would like but this is largely due to issues with the original installer, both for me and the unit manufacturer, which needed working around. -
That's not a bathroom, it's a fridge! I've never seen mould on ice cubes!!!
-
I don't think that can be the case. The downstairs loo doesnt have the flush plate fitted yet and so the water in the cistern is open to atmosphere, therefore well ventilated. The water in this cistern also has a lot of slime in it.
-
Leave the lid up?! Do I detect a man seeking a scientific reason not to put the loo seat down, Peter?????
-
When the softener guy came out he did a water hardness test to check for this. The test result came out lower than I was expecting, so I don't think that we're over softening.
-
The loo in our main bathroom doesn't get used that often as we have 2 others. I think, as precautionary measure, I shall make a point of using that one a couple of times a week in case it gets to gunked up.
-
I've had quick scan through a search on this and most explanations put it down to needing less soap in the shower. This doesn't ring true, though, as I don't put soap into the loo cisterns.

Thinking further on it, I've never had softened water before. I grew up in a soft water area, but softened water is different. Both OH and I commented early on after moving in that the water from the shower had a slippery feel to it, which, I guess, is a diluted version of the slime accumulating in the cisterns.

Yes, a Harvey. Our water is mains supplied, so that could rule out your borehole as a suspect.

Thanks Jeremy, good to know I'm not the only one. I shall do the same.

I havevwall hung loos with concealed cisterns, 3 in total one still awaiting the correct size of geberit flush plate. In the open cistern one I've noticed that the water is slimy and think that it's present in the others as well, evidenced by black mould forming just below the rim inside the bowl. I've never had this problem before, not that I've noticed, anyway. As we have a sewage treatment plant, I'm reluctant to put anything too aggressive into the system but I'm also puzzled why it forming, seemingly in the closed cisterns as well. Any suggestions?

I have internal French/double doors, 2 sets, leading off our hallway. I had to have bespoke ones as our ceilings are 2.7m downstairs. I got a very reasonable price on mine from Weekamp, a Dutch manufacturer with a UK outlet. Check out Weekamp Duiren for the Dutch site and full range. These are our internal doors from them.

Are these internal or external French doors/room dividers?

We need more ornamentation in our builds …

They're terrific. And if you can't hide it, why not make it beautiful? -
Looking at this photo, I can see why mine never got done as I can't see there being enough space to put this kind of arrangement into the loft. The pipework is very convoluted and takes up much of the space immediately around the unit so I don't think will be one for me. Thanks for the photos, though, very helpful for visualisation.

Trade discount
vivienz replied to Pocster's topic in Self Build VAT, Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL), S106 & Tax
And if it comes to needing a refund, most organisations will only make a refund to the credit card that was used to purchase the goods, which won't be your card. You're effectively paying for second hand goods.
