  1. Living where I do I was yet again in the firing line last night.... most of the time everything is fine as we are used to big winds, however my poor old landrover suffered a devastating blow..... and now I need to think about replacing the cover or preferably putting on a tin top. Boohoo said piggy.
  2. Have you looked at ironmongery direct ? I got my hinges from them, have not hung the doors yet but the hinges look good. I made sure to buy hinges that were over rated for the doors they were going to be used on so as to be sure they would be robust.
  3. I spent a long time looking at velux installations in corrugated tin and NOT ONE was done well....... I looked at why they were done badly and then sat down and worked out how to do it well. I did the layout and install myself as the devil is in the detail if you want it all to line up and work properly. The most important aspect for me was the position of the windows and there size in relation to the corrugations in the tin sheets. You need to make sure that one sheets edge will end with with a non cut downward sloping corrugations that falls directly into the inner gutter of the velux..... you then need to know that the windows width is also correct so that the far side gutter lines up with the next sheet of tin enabling that tin edge to fall in the opposite velux gutter...... then if you have multiple windows (I had 4 in my roof) you need to make sure that they all correspond with the corrugations. There really is very little to play with on the set out as the tin does not allow for error, you get about 10-20mm of space in the flashing gutter to play with but you really want the tin edge to fall in the middle as if it’s to close to the window it could block up with leaves or moss, to far and it’s not going to be as effective, also ANY error will be carried over to the next window as the corrugation spacing is set. It’s possible with very carful layout but if this is done wrong your going to have another example of how not to do it....... if you find a contractor that says they can do it INSIST to be able to go and look at one of there installs..... I visited 3 different installations done by 3 different professional roofers and I would not have payed for the work......
  4. Your definitely going to need to make sure that whatever you do is going to withstand wind. I would be looking at a tying your post holders to the concrete footing to give it the strength it needs. A post holding foot of some kind firmly attached to the concrete would be good as it will make maintenance much easier should you need to replace a post or section of fence. I would pour a footing with tie bars sticking up in the centre and then build a shuttered section that will be the centre of the wall and fill with concrete, build your stone faces on both sides, attach your post feet, build the coping and then plonk your fence on top and attach to the post feet.
  5. If there was an item that the Buildhub tool loan could do with it would be one of these cameras..... would love to have a Go with one one day. Look forward to hearing from others who know about these things how they interpret your images.
  6. My shed roof is 45 degrees and faces straight into the weather as it comes of the ocean, in wild weather the water blows up the tin profiles and of over the ridge......
  7. Is there still a need to use lead on a modern build ? It’s great when you live in an old shite box like mine and need to manipulate it over all the massive imperfections but on a modern build with uniform materials and finished ? Just seen mr Punters post, yes it’s a great material but very expensive for a first choice ? What have others used ?
  8. It looks like water could easily track back under this cover and really confuse things, the covers need to fold down below the top of the windows to create a drip line.
  9. That’s not going to be fun recutting with an angle grinder..... smoke and gunked up blade....... good luck
  10. Yup that’s what I used second time around..... great tape - repaired a rip on my quad bike seat as an experiment to see how long it holds up, been on over a month and still going strong.
  11. I’m sure it does, total clusterfruck of a situation for you, sorry but it’s just gone beyond my pay grade...... hope someone has a good idea.
  12. Hmmmm I built my own windows in my shed and an error in my glazing seal resulted in water getting onto the cill plate that was not tilted outwards and water made its way into the building...... bloody annoyed at my error as it was a fairly big job to sort it out, now I just need re to do the other side........ it faces east so does not get much weather but still needs to be done.....
  13. really tricky to differentiate between condensation and water ingress in this situation....... I suppose by lagging the cold spots in theory should eliminate condensation from this area but it may just form on the next coldest spot......
  14. Looks fantastic ! Really does not detract from the house at all and is a perfect fit on that wall !
  15. Button it up tight and keep the weather out and the heat in. Will be interesting to see what others have done.
  16. Errr.... not sure, but that’s what I just did on my shed.... my thinking was your better with a continuous envelope.
  17. Mine is a crate for Guinness bottles. Found it washed up on one of my walks along the shore, took it back to bin it but it’s found A second life with all the other ladders!
  18. Way to many ladders to list.......... maybe I will take a photo tomorrow just for fun....... it’s a ridiculous situation and I still find myself wondering if I need another one....... I found myself on a milk crate the other day and always standing on my saw horse..... think I need a 3 step one for the final part in the collection !
  19. Have you made sure that what you have covered then with is folded down at the edges as otherwise water will track under and either cause you some confusion or a hernia
  20. What happens on the far side of the gate ? I assume this is where water will run off, but how is it detailed ?
  21. Unbelievable....... you need to triple check your warranty man, to the point of maybe getting a solicitor to verify it...... you also need to flood test it ASAP and triple check all possible points of weakness, like behind the gate pillars...I’m sure they are stand up chaps but to have talked about flashings and then tell you they are an add on is a potential red flag.
  22. I assume you will be flashing it anyway along the wall as belt n braces but also to create a nice crisp transition ?
  23. Having run my own company where tools get seriously worked / abused I can confirm that this was a fault on many of our tools, it’s not obvious unless you strip the cable by which point you need to replace it anyway ! Best to replace with a decent cable and see if this fixes it.
  24. Completely agree, it’s such an important part of the build process and so very easy to do badly........
  25. I used to lay hedges For a living before moving onto stone, at the end of one arduous day after cleaning up the brash and rounding up the fires I was walking back to the tractor, there was a small log about 100mm x 200mm long and without thinking I thought it would be good to kick it really hard to get it to hit the fire that was some ways off....... stupid stupid stupid. It was a blackthorn and what I did not see was a large spike (they are poisonous and that’s why @JSHarris suffered inflammation) the spike went through the top of by wellington boot and a serious amount went directly into the top of my foot. I was in the middle of some remote field in Lincolnshire with an ancient tractor and a long drive to the nearest A&E, this was before mobiles. Unable to walk out and incapable of driving the tractor with this spike still in my foot and still sticking through the boot I tried to pull it out and it snapped of leaving a good chunk in my foot. A&E tried for a long time to dig it out by cutting in as far as they dared but without major foot surgery they could not get at it and sent me away with antibiotics, it took 3 courses of pills as each time I thought it was better I would then knock my foot and the poison would set of another major inflammation....... I guess at some point my body just absorbed all the bad stuff as after a few months of problems it cleared up for good. Anyway seriously off topic........ but don’t feck around with blackthorn!
