2.5m wide garage door, a decent default size?
scottishjohn replied to epsilonGreedy's topic in Garages & Workshops
I used to have a spoon hanging up which just touched windscreen on drivers side when in far enough to shut door -
I can see far more better immediate uses in the motor industry for it . make smaller units in hundreds of thousands and price will drop instant heating of car in the morning ,with very little energy usage ,only a circulation pump , water heating for your motorhome for living space and DHW as you drive along wi-fi from house before you open it up --etc. it is using excess free heat to charge it up anyway ,will come from engine exhaust or cooling system or maybe from regenerative braking system or drive motor on an electric car or maybe a solar thermal system on house to charge it up --rather than using a big thermal store for DHW or UFH but price needs to drop first I think

whilst i can see the advantages of sunamp in some circumstances --excess pv etc I personally and i,m not wanting an argument am not convinced of the overall advantage considering costs at this stage maybe that will change as the technology improves which is exactly why i want service void to be able simply alter things in the future
-
think that would be a question for JS for the control of the units, I was assuming most would be using PV for rechariging nothot water but if using smaller units then it might work out better with current software on the c uni Q have where it won,t charge till well depleted ,so it might be self diverting -- definately one for JS or NICK he will have a way for sure . but of course your design of house will have a bearing on what is best for you comes back to old story of not making anything till design is set in stone to be right first time thats the hard bit .LOL I doubt i will think of all scenarios when designing this is why I,m still thinking of having 0.75 - 1m service cavity "wet wall" down one side of house connected to service room ,so it easy to make any changes in spec in the future without ripping things apart. maybe won,t be possible --time will tell

I thought it was just a heat store ? how you deploy it is your choice ,so why not at point of use would save heat losses between bathrooms if long pipe runs in a big house or granny flat annex just a suggestion
-
still in use now can fly low +slow very handy +is very heavily armoured

walking round with a joss stick or small smoker -like for a bee hive might show you things if leaks are bad -
spec sheet of wharthog https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairchild_Republic_A-10_Thunderbolt_II an aircraft i would like to have flown in real world sim games with were fun though
-
the "warthog " a10 thunderbolt carries 1500 rounds of this ammo --weighs 7 tons but is a great tank killer

thanks for that I know my electric bill for year at this house is around 9700kw --thats all energy input as i,m all electric ,including 24/7 pond pump outside lights etc in this house to be fair me and her like it 23c everywhere in house and it is running on theromstats 24/7,and probably hotter in years to come so anything I build close to passiv will be a major improvement and will suit me fine . I,m still unsure till I get final design what i will be building and with what system --but plenty of scope . I,d like to think I have enough money to do both plots --we will see as costs crystalize -

everybody makes their own choices and as long as they are happy with them that's perfect and no one has the right to say their choice is not a valid one if it fulfills their design goals and aspirations -

above the extra insulation . the noise reduction will be very good with insulated plaster board as i found out when refurbing this house and that was only 38mm screwed direct onto existing plasterboard on north and east walls (outside walls of that room) -
I suppose if you are a "sunamp man " then you will not have long runs cos you will have a sunamp in each bathroom and not main hot storage
-
theres your answer then --hot only is requirement
-
would depend on flow through them ,as they will heat up if not flowing all the time

think that is a 30 year plan though -trees that drop leaves don,t grow as quick as christmas trees. but i suppose it depends how far away they are as to hieght required -

I am already there ,at pension , and trying to sell off my last biz property and starting on self build .my views are similar to yours but tinged with --when i,m dead --do I give a crap about someone getting extra benefit from me going OTT on build spec ?,which will take 20 years to recoup I am thinking more of economical running costs .but leave enough cash to spend on going to far flung places my will should read "being of sound body and mind --I SPENT THE BLOODY LOT". and government can go whistle for inheritance tax if at all possible -
as long as your mains pressure is good
-
If all are inside the hot envelope of house --then probably not worth the extra expense outside that then yes
-
hardly --that surely is the point we know better by now so we should not be making problems for the future that we don,t need to

and nuclear waste is still aradio actve substance ,except when it was in the gorund it was not so concetrated you want to eat some then ?,where you going to dump it ,who's picking up the tab for that Its exactly the same this disposable way of life cannot continue

no argument there , but is it really required --will only cost more to build and is the extra £10 or more per sqm (icf poly block ) really needed? lest say 150sqm of wall @!£10 sqm = £1500 . you would need to know extra fuel costs to know if its a good trade off. getting even cheaper heating cost gets more expensive --its the law of deminshing returns and if low anyway ? I,m not saying anybody is wrong going above passiv minimum ,so don,t jump on me , but as with all things ==there is always compromise -

So maybe the answer to summer overheating if you want lots of floor to roof windows is coating on glass to cut down the amount ,not all of the solar gain it can give ,for a comfortable house -
I,m sure they said that about nuclear waste as well-- It has not
