    GRP roof

Im now going to tackle the orangery roof 5m x 4m with 2mtr x 1.5 lantern central ill form the slopes and board with OSB3 Close the cavity with OSB and return the fibreglass over the cavity and finish with copings Ive a drain at either corner to run into two hoppers I have done most the work myself but had allowed to bring someone in for the GRP The quote is more than expected £1600 Ive priced all materials 400 including vat Price seems a bit steep? My question is GRP so specialist Or is it something I can tackle myself As previously stated We had a quote of 8500 for slating the main house But found it very easy with no experience of slating Any advice on this would be appreciated
  3. Ive spent a couple of hours trying to find out weather I need to put the grey ducting pipe in for a land line and were to run it to Ive contacted BT and was told that Open reach deal with all that The only number that I can find is no longer in use Best BT can offer is buy 12 months broadband and they will make arrangements with Open reach Not much good to me at this stage My nearest neighbour has a BT overhead line I would prefer the underground route Do they supply the ducting or can I purchase it and install myself Or is it something that has to be done by a BT contractor Any help would be appreciated Gary
  4. Unlikely to get water soaking through K rend But you still need trays above all openings With at least a couple of weeps on each Ive just fully K rendered mine I set the weeps at 15 mil and rendered over them When I rubbed up the render the following morning the weeps reappeared I set all the weeps right above the heads and 150 out with a central weep for larger openings So I new were they were You really don't get much render going inside the weep I jus poke a fine nail in to clean them out The L shaped type are best for render as you are left with only 10 mil showing
  5. I finished the render off this morning Just the Orangery to do and the two garages I can now get rid of the scaffolding and put copings on the orangery and the GRP on the roof We are going to get the outside looking something like before stating the inside of the house

  7. Thank you I can relate to what Peter says My wife didn't like heights but helped me felt the garages Then volunteered to felt the house and was itching to have a go at the slating I did all the cuts for the valleys and Deborah fixed the slates in place
  8. My better half unrecognisable as her day job a hospital theatre manager

  10. Thank you We have put some hours in
  11. We hired a conveyer belt and myself and son spent a day loading Then over the next three weeks myself and my wife had eight days and I had a day doing the lead around the chimney and two 6 mtr valleys We then had half a day fitting the dry ridge which was easy Apart from I didn't want to risk damageing the newly laid slate so I asked my wife to fix them while I pushed them along the ridge behind her All eight stone of her One of the quotes was 8500 labour 25% waste We had 520 slates that were bowed Which I returned and was credited for I presume slaters would count these as waste Quite surprised as these were grade 1
  12. Hi all ive not been on the forum for a while As you know we broke ground in November The two double garages went up pretty quick the help of a labourer I soon had them roofed in Somewhere dry for storage at last Christmas so us up to chamber Myself and my wife spent most of Christmas putting the I joists in and the 8x2 joists for the orangery We just managed to get floored out in time for the brickys return from holiday The brickys offered to help us man handle the twelve mtr trusses up The following day a friend and I and the brickys labourer set the roof out I went in the following day to make the valleys up and finish the gable restraints Next my wife and I spent two days felting and battening Then the 4000 slates We had intended getting someone in But the quotes were ridiculous All wanted me to get the slates up there prior to there arrival So we decided to do the slating a lead work ourselves All went well apart from rain virtually every day Myself and my son made fast work of fitting most of the windows Then last weekend the scaffold was dropped and rebuilt on Monday The forecast was good for last week So my son and myself made a start on the K rend Three days so us complete one side and all of the front Ive prepped the chimney and remaining gable and should get them complete tomorrow and rubbed up on Tuesday Well that's about were we are up to Ive lots of photos Perhaps should have posted as we went along But with working full time and working on the at nights and weekends I tend to nod off when I eventually arrive home regards Gary
  13. I totally agree Planners tried to dictate Welsh slate for ours looks great last forever Costs a small fortune Our engineer pointed out the same as what you are saying They cant dictate the materials used So they altered the condition to grey blue Riven edged slate
  14. Hi We managed to get the slate supplier down to 99p per slate 500x250 7mil grade one Make sure you get a certificate 250 a piece for a couple of hundred slate and a half he wouldn't budge on that as I had already placed our order My mistake my order was 225 square mtrs There are loads of company's out there that want your business
  15. You've hit the nail on the head No pun intended The stuff I used on the garages would be prone to nail tear like dave mine may well be left exposed for a while
  16. Thanks for the quick reply I'm going straight onto the rafters Ive felted the two garages in using easy trim membrane 30 a roll But would prefer something a little more substantial for the house
  17. With the help of a couple of friends I managed to get all the main house roof trusses in place and braced Yesterday I still have to make the valleys up and fit the facials and soffits But my thoughts have now turned to which membrane to use under the 5000 slate I have to fit So many on the market From 25 to a 150 per roll I wondered what you guys have used
  18. Im surrounded by Ash trees So I brought a SE in prior to buying the plot Weve paid 4600 for 153 beamed floor and gone down 1,8 stepping up to 1.2 Plus a layer of over site for drainage 7 cube Including two d garages we have used 143 cube of concrete and removed 740 tons of spoil All this for a flat site on good firm ground Opposite a sand quarry Nice to have trees But expensive
  19. Im about to order our roofing slates 600x300 155 plus vat per slate To cover 160mtrs My question is does the price sound ok Also my local merchant has stated that these are grade 1 Spanish slates Although the slates are about 6 mill and vary little in thickness There are silver mineral deposits on the back of each slate Is this normal in a grade 1 slate Should each crate have a certificate Regards Gary
  20. Counter battern with 25 mil bats is fine As long as there is a void you wont have any issues
  21. One thing I have learned is you don't need an Architect If you have a structural engineer. Most designs are based on drawings already in circulation. My working drawing reads as follows. Foundations refer to SE design. Floor refer to Floor beam design. Same with the chamber floor and roof and steels and drains. Money for old rope.
  22. works well in 0 temperatures Far to heavy for roofs
  23. Thanks Vijay
  24. Hi guys can someone help me out I'm sure ive seen a thread about getting a PDF of a working drawing laminated online
