used water softener: harvey twin tank worth a risk?
oranjeboom replied to oranjeboom's topic in General Plumbing
It's one of those jobs I have been putting off as I have a feeling it's all going to go wrong. I'm hoping to work on this in the next week or so. Will report back. But yes, @Jeremy Harris is one of the experts on here on the Harvey units. -
Worth getting quotes for supply and fit!! I bought mine direct a few years ago and have been looking for someone to fit them. Contacted at least 5 'approved installers' and have only heard back from 2. One quoted a decent quote for a day's work (also 2x UNiQ12 units) but thinks it may over-run a bit) but has now gone quiet. The other company quoted £3,000!!! Yes THREE THOUSAND POUNDS STERLING!!!! I've done the bloody hard work by putting them into position in a very tight space, got the plumbing and wiring to where the units are so it's s simple case of just connecting and testing the whole lot. Sunamp are not interested of course. I'm assuming supply and fit aren't off the piss-take scale. At this rate I'll be kidnapping @Nickfromwales for a couple of days...

Ideas for what to do with a “spare” large window
oranjeboom replied to Nick1c's topic in Windows & Glazing
Stick it on the BH market place! You may even beat @pocster 's attempt in selling his walk on windows! But seriously, you could put up a free ad on gumtree and just keep renewing it. You'll be surprised at the interest you may get. I managed to sell all my old UPVC windows and some were very un-standard in size. Depends on what price you are looking at of course. -
All my walls are white and I was going to use Dulux Trade Diamond Matt throughout, but after 4tins of the stuff I wasn't that impressed (not able to remove fly shit from ceiling without removing paint) with either the hefty price or the results. I then tried Leyland Trade Hardwearing paint (1/2 the cost) which I find rolls a bit better and does 'feel' durable. Some of the other paints I have tried come off if I just use a dry cloth to take any marks out! You end up being very careful how you apply the Dulux stuff as you see and count how quickly the paint disappears from the tin! Their Easycare seems like a good product too and have used that in bathrooms and kitchen. At the moment no paint will stand the clumsiness of tradespeople so I know I will have to repair/repaint walls where some idiot decides to scrape by with his claw hammer hanging from his belt!

Just want to be able to move in! Or at least get some of the furniture in so that I can get the family out of the static and 'live' in the house during the day, do school work in their bedrooms. Don't want to move furniture in order to get 4.2m length trim into place. If I can get the shed emptied of possessions I can move my tools into there also. And then also go through the garage to see what sh.. I have in there before I knock down that eyesore. Need to clear the clutter. So much clutter in my head, in the house, in the shed, in the garage....aarrrrgh...
-
Thanks @Ferdinand - indeed, that's down to £2.30/m now! Delivery is certainly pushing the price up by £100 but I have no choice. The annoying thing is that I have a bloody timber yard at the back of my garden - within arms length. But of course it is shut.
-
wow! Online looking at £3.50 (inc del and tax). Simple bullnose 4" primed.
-
@Oz07 With my local timber yards closed, I am now looking to get my skirting board sourced from online retailers. Seen some stupid prices for simple bullnose profile so just wondering what places you were looking at online back in March? Looking for about 150metres so would like to think I can get a decentish price on that. The likes of BNQ and Wickes have no stock.

Just coming back to this now that I want to complete all the wiring to/from consumer unit. Just to be sure, this is what I was going to do in terms of getting 2.5mm² radials for the two Sunamp units: 2.5mm² radial from consumer unit to DP switch and then 2.5mm² to PV diverter? Installer will complete all of the remaining wiring.- 159 comments

I have the KOEMMERLING 88PLUS profile. Not alu-clad though. Seems like a decent product, 6 chambers and at PH standard. Purchased direct from the continent at fraction of UK cost.
-
I would not worry about the sole plate too much at this stage. Mine is still pretty much uncovered now, although the cladding which ends about 400mm above the sole plate, protects most of the plate from rain. You could always slip in some DPC up behind the membrane to cover the plate as a temporary measure but I personally would not bother. I would invest more time in working out how to deal with potential condensation issues around the sole plate (EPS would be the way to go as per Bitpipe). Was your SIPs supplied by a local firm? Just out of interest.

Sealing between wood and plasterboard - what silicone?
oranjeboom replied to oranjeboom's topic in Decorating
Thanks. I've used caulk before but was never impressed with it as found it to crack after a while also and was not something I had considered using again. I'll give it a go and hopefully no issues with it this time. -

That's correct. I'll run 4 off 2.5mm² radials. May need to add some extra timber in attic to do this, but would leave it elevated above insulation layer that way also. I'll just keep it simple then, rather than having an armoured cable with local submain board- 159 comments

Thanks for the info @Jeremy Harris, @Onoff To limit the number of cable runs from the CU, I also have 2 Sunamp (UniQ eDual 12) units that will need connecting. Could I oversize the radial from CU and have one DP isolator switch covering both sunamp units? Just seeing what's best in terms of limiting the cabing that has to go in. 4x 7metre runs of 6mm cable for the willis heaters and the sunamps or: 2x 7metre runs of 10mm cable for the willis heaters and the sunamps All clipped to cable and only 300mm exposure to loft roll.- 159 comments

Geolotechnical Analysis for Piled Foundations
oranjeboom replied to Randomiser's topic in Foundations
You could alternatively go back to square one and get another SE to look at your build plans. From my experience many are over cautious and will cover their arse to the n'th degree. Obviously you don't want issues with your build, but sometimes things are way over engineered. But certainly if you need piling done, get a survey first. And then get ready for a big hit on the wallet (as you have no doubt seen from your the quotes you already have in). I'd also recommending piling in the drier months as it's no fun shifting the rig around in the quagmire and any miss-drilled piles could be at extra cost to you so check the contract carefully! -

Yes, that was my intention. Would two of these fit the bill? https://www.cef.co.uk/catalogue/products/4574801-24-hour-7-day-single-channel-1-module-digital-din-rail-timer A total of 300mm. All clipped against timber.- 159 comments

And there I was thinking a level shifter was a lift! Yes, I had a chat with Terry a while back with his RPi approach and will look into that more once the house is 'done'. Part P compliant electrician hopefully turning up next week. I may not be in compliance with the wife otherwise!- 159 comments

It's ground floor, I think, as it's not likely that UFH would be set in concrete on the first floor. Sorry, probably should have said 'attic'. I've just been up there and I can route it so that the cabling is not covered by 300mm loft roll. It'll only go through the loft roll when it disappears down into the cupboard beneath ceiling level again (where the CU is located).- 159 comments

The CU is otherside of hall, so it's and up and over job via the loft above (3m under loft roll) and 4m clipped to wall. It's getting a bit tight with cabling space so would prefer this. I'll also have to run in a further cable later on for my two Sunamps also.- 159 comments

It's all in 22mm including large bore flexi's. Only bits that aren't is the section immediately in/out of willis heaters (15/15/22 tees) Yes, was not going to use any to start off with. No time to get my head round RPi. It's one for when the house is done. More agro on the domestic front, so no time for 'faffing around'. But I'll be keeping an eye out for your simplification update in due course! I like simples... Yes, as for the loops I have various lengths. I just went with what Wunda dictated. Longest length is just over 100m and shortest 60m iirc. Will no doubt have to tinker with it when it's up an running. Once I get the bloody electrician round!- 159 comments
