  1. There was something about Cloudfire and routing porn a while back. Just popped into my news feed, honest. Seem to remember that the headline was that they were in some sort of trouble with the regulatory people (or government snoopers)
  2. It is like the the U-Value of a wall, the smaller the area, the less heat is transferred per unit time. So yes, it will take longer to heat up. The reason is that a HP has a lower output temperature, so you need more area.
  3. Did I understand it right that you told the builder that you were concerned about cost and were halting the project temporarily. Then he whacked you with a bill for other work? If I was a builder, I would do the same as it comes across as a dead end project. Not how I would like to work, but business is often done that way.
  4. I bought a cheap office chair from B&M, I am very pleased with it. Much better than the 40 quid price tag suggested. It is a shame that you are at the wrong end of the country. If you were near High Wycombe you would be spoilt for choice when it comes to furniture.
  5. Has anyone managed to track down a supply of Command Units yet? Be a useful resource for the Kingspans.
  6. I was stopped from walking into my local tip with one small bag of rubbish. Mentioned it over at the other place and our old mate Damon HD said he had the same problem. As it was Damon, he organised a mass 'walking in with rubbish' though his local contacts. Rather than a bonfire, you could make a small brazier burn smaller amounts. Tends to smoke less.
  7. Said you would LOL
  8. An emergency generator and fan heater is pretty cheap in the scheme of things too
  9. Yesterday I used 8.1 kWh of electricity to heat my house and all the hot water I need. Timber has around 4.5 kWh of energy per kg, and if you are luck, you will get around 65% efficiency from a WBS. So what will be around 3 kg of dried timber. My worst day of heating was around 40 kWh, so about 14 kg of dried timber. If the timber has a density of 600 kg.m-3, and my usual winter load is 20 kWh, I would need 7 kg of timber a day, and say I heat for 150 days, that is about 2 m3 of storage needed. And that is before I get onto the environmental and personal health reasons. Find a better method.
  10. Didn't @JSHarris mention weedkiller from salty water and electrolyses. Can it remove body hair, then I won't have to fix @newhome's epilator, would get me out of a hole
  11. You really don't understand boys do you
  12. Re the Command Unit, I know that @joe90 got one 'from near Southampton. Carrier have an office in Leatherhead, so it may have been there. http://www.carrieraircon.co.uk/contact-us/ Just spent 5 minutes being shunted around a phone system. The man to talk to is down my way, almost. Michael Opie, Plymouth. 01752 753200 There seems to be some confusion as Carrier and now Carrier-Toshiba and the phone system is just dreadful. Good luck with it all.
  13. I would have thought that you could pump in ST until you reach a temperature that the thermal store cannot cope with. It is free energy after all. So maybe a small bit of tinkering needed there. As for drinks, when I was looking to move down here I would leave work early, drive the 4+ hours down and look at houses. To keep me alert I started drinking Tesco "K" stimulant drink. It comes in 1 litre bottles, costs about 80p and, after 2 litres on the way home, annoyed the hell out my now Ex G/F as I told her all about my day. And I could get up for work at 6AM the next day. It is just brilliant. Don't make me wee like coffee does either, so all the goodness is kept inside
  14. Now all you need is an energy monitor so measure the performance
  15. I find it hard to believe that an electrician would have left it in that state. Was it a previous home owner 'having a go'.
  16. Hysterically at one stage.
  17. Rather than doing a full PHPP model, you could make a simple spreadsheet model and see what happens when you change the key elements of walls, doors, windows floor, and air changes. You can normally get basic weather information for you area from the Met Office.
  18. Oh dear, have I got a reputation for this already!
  19. What would be the advantage of using a PHE? I can't think of one off the top of my head apart from they can be changed to a smaller or larger one.
  20. Your SatNav says 'Find Alternative' Do they find plumbing parts now as well as speed cameras
  21. I worked briefly for a now defunct small windturbine manufacturer. They were looking at reducing the installed cost from £18,000 down to £12,000 for a 4 kWp turbine. It was pointed out that even of the actual generator and blades were free, they could still not do it for £12,000. Probably why they went bankrupt twice. Also worth remembering that that the maximum power of a turbine is generated at a fairly high windspeed. Try running at 12 m/s.
  22. Yes, now is the time to flush it out and see what is happening. Well down here it would be as there is occasionally some sun today.
  23. Small turbines have a very low efficiency, sometimes below 20%. It is the nature of turbines that power is proportional to the swept area and the cube of the windspeed. Even 5kW are not brilliant. There was a spreadsheet by Dr. Michael Hunt (I know) that showed all the efficiencies of most available turbines.
  24. I am all confused now. Was just catching up and saw the comment about the boys in the shower, so when back a page to remind myself what they were up to and this is what I saw first. And I went to Public School in the 70s, so thought I had seen it all
