  1. The isolators can be in the garage, as long as they are easily accessible. If I understand your wiring correctly, you will be dealing with the voltage from, in effect, 3 panels, does your inverter work efficiency at reduced voltage?
  2. Just had a quick look at Geo ear's website. Two things would concern me. Seems they are using an expanding polymer, probably a polyyrethane. The other is the use of the word 'leading' in their blurb. I worked for the leading supplier of saunas, steamrooms, spa baths and sunbeds. We joked that it meant we made mistakes and the customers paid for them.

Would have to see the specifications. @Old McDonald What is the size of this shed, and roughly how thick is the insulation? We could do a rough heatloss calculation and then get a better idea of what is needed. Just to clarify, I really meant to suggest that the night storage heaters were charged with PV most of the time. There is no fundamental difference between a fan heater, a panel heater, a storage heater a heat pump solution. 1 kWh of delivered heat, at the required temperature, is the same as any other 1 kWh of heat delivered. Why we use standardised units.

  15. Shorter hours of daylight as well as the 'sunbeams' travelling though more out the turbid atmosphere. Solar power follows the product of 3 sine waves (or 3 cosine was depending on how you want to work it). In other words, it is not linear. What does PVGIS have to say about your setup?
  16. Next time you chat to him, ask him which project he was dealing with. The Rosenanowes Quarry project started in 1977 and achieved its aims sometime in the late 1980s, think the site was eventually closed down in the early 1990s because it was only a proof of concept, never intended to be a production site. This one is still going, but seems to have lead times similar to a new nuclear power plant. https://geothermalengineering.co.uk/united-downs/ I am not against geothermal (HDR), just think that a bit of sanity has to be brought into the mix. It is really, really, hard to do and so far not been achieved, in 45 years (so can't really be claimed to be new technology). Hot Wet Rock and other Enhanced Geothermal Systems is a different matter, this has been going on for decades.
  17. Worth working out your energy usage. Ideally you want to minimise usage, then the problem goes away. Also worth considering car charging. We are heading to a BEV world, so may be better to fit 3P now. You can easily connect up more PV with 3P as well. Don't worry about the system being balanced, that is the electrician's job.
  18. Welcome. Have you considered a night storage heater, some of the more modern ones have fans built in. Saves having a battery if some of the power comes from the PV. There is also air to air heat pumps. These can be quite cheap to run. Usually worth working out the heat losses of any building, even a shed, then you can size a heating system to be in the most efficient window, most if the time. Really comes down to how much you want to spend. Do you know much about LED grow lamps? Often thought about buying some, but don't know enough about plants and getting the best growth out if them.
  19. Jubilee Pool wanted to try something similar, but ended up with, in effect, a small well supplying a heat pump. There was a geothermal hot dry rocks project here. Achieved its goals of getting water back out at 100⁰C. Well when I say achieved, they pumped in 100 litres of liquid and got 1 kg of steam out. Then the project moved to France as it was EU funded. Can't happen down here are the whole of Cornwall has a moratorium on fracking. Worth noting that at Rosenanowes Quarry, Cornwall has the best resources, there is a resource of 120 mW/m². So that is about 1 kWh/m².year. Makes you wonder why they bothered.

Just to be clear, I don't think element cycling is a problem, though it used to be with car indictor bulbs, they always lasted less time than headlight bulbs. Down on the seafront at St. Ives, there are dozens of ASHP, usually to cool beer, they are very exposed and none seem to be showing bad corrosion.
  23. They may be on about thermal cycling. If the element is on for 60 seconds, then off for 120 seconds, then on for 60, then off for 120 i.e. mimicking 1/3rd of the output potential, then it may shorten the life. Would be a strange setup then did that though.
  24. Work out the price difference, then look at how much electricity that will buy in. Also, at 15⁰ off horizontal, you are limiting the production quite a bit. Will be good around noon, in the summer.
