  1. Pretty sure this lack of "gumption" with me at the mo is weight / diet related. First house, about 4 stone ago, I never stopped! For the last 3 days just had a handful of walnuts and an apple for breakfast just before 5am then nothing until 3pm except copious quantities of water and a couple of teas. Did x4 2L bottles of water up and down on the roof. The best bit of that in this heat because your so hydrated you can just enjoy the heat. No word of a lie it's been fine though too busy to think about grub. Get home around half three 'ish and had a beetroot and more nuts. Normal dinner and half a glass of red, no ale. I'd urge anyone to try the walnuts & apple thing. 16st 11lbs last Sunday 16st 7lbs yesterday. 15st is the goal! Last night got an Indian takeaway but only had half of it and stuck the rest in the fridge. Half a Kingfisher in lieu of the red. Managed one evening to make a tentative re-start on sorting the side of the house where I laid the new water main and soil pipes. Feel pretty good this morning. Often used to get a g'teed Sat morning headache from junk food overload during the week. Might go and figure some levels!

  2. I need some advice with regards discharging planning conditions. Our planning was granted subject to 4 conditions- Materials approval Datum point and various site levels Hard and soft landscaping plan Satisfactory implementation of bat roost mitigation from ecologist We werent permitted to start building till the first 3 had been discharged which was covered in a single discharge application with a single fee. The final point cannot be discharged until the building is complete which is turn calls for an additional discharge fee to be paid. Is there a way around this. This is just a ridiculous system.

  3. I'm encouraged to pursue the theory of doing away with the anti crack mesh so thanks for the comments. I too was, and continue to be, shocked by the engineering on the slab (and house in general) but the RC guys say it doesn't look out of the ordinary for the scenario (see pic)...the house recedes fully underground so the slab is supporting and tied into 2.7m high retaining walls....hence it has similarly wide edge thickening to 300mm with 3 layers of a393. How well the ufh will work in such a volume of concrete remains to be seen but my mind is more on summer cooling anyway...the plot is essentially a chalk pit hell hole in the hot weather.

  4. Too late I know but I emailed Swansea hackspace: https://swansea.hackspace.org.uk/ Justin Mitchell from there came back earlier but I've only just read it: "The hackspace does have a small stock of generic bead thermistors, I cannot remember exactly which kind they are but 10k ntc sounds plausible. You are welcome to drop in and check, there is a workshop on today 12-4ish and there is our usual open evening monday 7pm onwards. Tom whitehouse electrical/spares store in swansea market -might- have something, he has an odd selection of stuff. many tumble driers and other home goods use ntc thermistors, so you might get one from a spare parts supplier but they may not know what rating it is. next best urgency is to buy from cpc online as they will next-day you stuff and their minimum order is £5" Worth knowing for the future. Bet there's a whole new bunch of neeks, nerds, gerds & blerds there that could assist on your madcap ideas! In fact there's one in most towns.

  5. Its going down in that void. I can just about get the pipe stat springs on . The idea being if the thermistor fails the landing carpet is the other side and can be taken up to get to it in the next life. The white square is the SPEEDFIT pipe with the sun shining on it.

  6. If it's speedfit pipe then can you not take a section out of it @Nickfromwales and stick a bit of copper in ..?? Would have thought it would heat up/ respond quicker ..?

  8. @TheMitchells Consider the option of making a virtue of the difference and making the breakfast bar out of a contrasting beautiful material. What about something like annealed glass or a different colour or texture Corian?

  9. Sliders will fit into a standard 90mm wall these days - same as a steel studwork panel.

  10. We're using a local company called Vfast, that use WiMAX, for our broadband and telephone using voIP. The problem we had with OR was they originally agreed to supply an underground line then changed their minds. That was because we already have an overhead line to the bungalow in the garden of which we are building our house. So they would only supply an overhead line to the new house.

  11. The loading valve (hence pump) wants to be as near the stove as possible. Its main function is to ensure that the boiler gets to operating temperature quickly raising efficiency and reducing pollution. If there's a long pipe run between heat source and loading valve you've got a much bigger mass of water to heat as well as more heat loss so the system will take longer to reach operating temperature. Can't see the relevance of flammability. It must be an enclosed stove, so no significantly greater fire risk than a gas or oil boiler.

  12. My missus (a veggie) will often say after I've eaten a home cooked chilli con carne for instance, "That recipe was supposed to feed four!" I really don't have an on/off switch. Good this morning though, cored and sliced Braeburn & a handful of walnuts at about 5am - they have a proven appetite suppresant in them and it works for me. As long as I drink (water) I won't feel hungry until about 3. And so it begins! Might ditch the nightly ale for a small glass of red.

  13. I need to get a roof on.... ...and it's all the crap jobs getting in the way - taken the guys nearly a day to get the old one off as it's got to come down in bits. I stand and look at the jobs that need doing and contemplate what to do first - usually it's read the forum ..!!
