Electric Tariff

LSB

Recommended Posts

I've just had the dreaded email from EON saying that my fixed tariff is ending soon.

I have 3 phase, who are people finding the best company to use.

We don't have a smart meter.

We have 2 separate outlets each using 1 phase, one for the house and one for all the outbuildings.

Suggestions greatly received.

I don't really want a smart meter if I can avoid.

I will have in the new build, but don't want here.

Wow for 3 phase! Not sure you will be able to see that figure from where you are likely to end up in the current climate even with the Webb telescope - but best of luck anyway!

thanks, I fixed long before the current crisis, the best I've found so far is 3 times what I'm paying now, for nothing different.

that's with the same supplier.

All i can say is count your lucky chickens that you've been on a fix through the worst of it all. Not an awful lot you can do about the current prices, aside from reducing your usage.

unfortunately as the build is using the house power the usage is only going one way, and that's not down.

Lots of the tools are fuel, but lots are electric.

Thanks for the response, I just wondered if I was missing a trick that everyone here knew and that there was a reasonably priced supplier out there somewhere.

I have been with Octopus for my last house and this one and can’t fault them for customer service and reasonable prices, if you want to change to them I can give you a referral and get £50 off your first bill. 👍 (And they only buy green energy).

but if I understand you must have a smart meter and that's problematic with 3 phase.

That said I'll look at them and hopefully you will also get £50 referral fee.

No.

They trade in low carbon generation, not the same thing at all.

Buying 1 MWh of low carbon generation, to be used sometime in the future, does not stop 1 MWh being generated elsewhere right now.

Nor do I, but as I am on E7 I am having one fitted next month, if they turn up.

As part of the EDF questioning and consent, if you are over 60 years old, they ask if you can be put on the preferential/vulnerable person register.

Ok smarty pants, I got the wording wrong (but means much the same thing)

Octopus Energy Group is a British renewable energy group specialising in sustainable energy. It was founded in 2015 with the backing of British fund management company Octopus Group, a British asset management company. ”. 😉

Must say I am in the process of changing to Octopus, they have been really good so far.  I do have a smart meter for electric, still have my gas, but that meter is a normal one.  The smart meter has never worked(no communication), with BG it was just an issue that was never getting fixed. Within a week Octopus have sent software patches to my meter. Just wait to see if it fixes.

I moved to Octopus because everyone says the service is great, plus the standing charges were cheaper than my existing suppliers.

So do Octopus.

Why is that problematic?  I have 3 phase & Octopus arranged for their contractor to fit the appropriate meter.  I'm on the Agile tariff atm which suits my consumption pattern (no gas & EV).  May change tariff in winter once ASHP heating is needed.

that's interesting as I'm over 60

I have no idea why 3P is an issue with meters, but there are lots of posts here and elsewhere that says that many a time fitters have turned up and gone away again

we  have no gas and no EV and won't have in this house.

new build (same land) will have EV as planning condition, but as we are very unlikely to buy EV cars then we will install wiring, but not the charging point until we have no choice.

Once Octopus gave me the meter installation date I called their contractor to ensure they knew I needed a 3 phase meter.  Apparently not all their installers are qualified to fit 3 phase meters so they allocated me one who is - he did a really neat job.

I have 3P and am on Octopus but they can’t/ won’t offer me a 3P smart meter so I can’t change to any of the more appropriate tariffs. 😞

Each time they give me a meter install date, I ask if they’ve clocked it’s 3P and they say no and drop it. I’ve tried 3 times now.

We had an awful time trying to get a meter fitted from anyone in Dec 21. They all said they were no longer installing meters. One of them whispered down the phone to try Octopus so I did. They prevaricated until I phoned to say that husband had just been diagnosed with bowel cancer and we were living, in December, in a caravan. They arrived the next working day with a single phase meter having been told that we were 3 phase. Took it away and came back the next day with the right one :)

I have had Octopus fit a 3-phase smart meter - it took about 3 months. OTOH I am getting no sense at all from Octopus support - to the extent I'm suspecting there's just a bot at the other end.

For instance, they won't let me sign up to any of their smart tariffs, even though they have installed a smart meter...

So, I've been looking at Octopus, but you only seem to be able to apply online and there doesn't seem to be anywhere to state that we have 3P.

Does it matter, will that come later and what difference does it make to the cost.

You take a bit of a leap of faith - not warranted for either of my accounts right now. I did get ‘hello’ to check that they could in theory change my dumb 3P meter for a smart 3P before moving. It took 3 months and multiple and fairly firm prompting on my part, but they did at least accomplish that - something that Eon were incapable of doing.

I've got to switch in Aug otherwise sign up again for EON for a year.

Will I be able to get an Octopus account that quickly.  This is for my house not the barn conversion.
