  1. We had external wooden cladding removed from between ground and first floor in our uk 60s build and this is what was revealed. It's now been clad back over in hardie plank but I wanted to know if people knew what the plastic was protecting and what would have been directly behind it e.g. ends of the floor boards (or would they sit above/below or behind something else), a beam or cinder blocks or something else?
  2. Hey all, Wondering what slate size I should go for on this build and how many slate and half should I be estimating. I had in mind 200 slate and half 235sqm roof area for slating 500 x 250 4845 600 x 300 3135 Thanks C
  3. Hi Guys, I have two questions. 1, all the images I have seen for warm flat roofs look like a sandwich with board, insulation, board. However im struggling to find any information on what to put around the outside and how I attach this to the flat roof, I could use OSB but then screw it into the top and bottom deck? Or do you run a batten on the inside of the sandwich, or not do anything. Im using 150mm insulation so was thinking of running a 150x40mm piece of timber along the edge of the roof to double up as something to attach the fascia etc too and enclose the roof and give me something to run the vapour barrier up around the insulation. 2, On one side of the flat roof it buts up against the second floor of my timber frame, however this is supposed to have woodfibre board insulation on the outside. Im not sure if I should run the roof upto the woodfibre, or install the roof under the woodfibre and bring it down on top, but then I worry about any water running onto it and keeping it damp. Hope that makes sense. Paul
  4. Hello, I am constructing a small shed (3.5m x 2.2m) that will be used only for storage. I want to render the external walls with the K-Rend silicone render to match my outbuilding and my house. I was wondering if you could help me understand what the best way to construct the shed is so that it does not cost a lot and can be rendered. My ideas: - wooden frame + OSD (not sure how easy it is to render over it) - wooden frame + cement board (seems like the way to go) - blocks (seems like a lot more work and expense) any suggestions would be very much appreciated.
  5. We have started a simple two-storey extension - hallway and bedroom above. Unfortunately we didn't get a payment structure confirmed before the work started (we've learnt our lesson!) - we are now confirming staggered payments with him because the builder is now wanting £4k a week steadily throughout the job until the end, which we're not entirely comfortable with. We would like to hold back a decent percentage at the end because we've been burned before and because we want to make sure the job is finished as we'd like before coughing up most of the money. We have an independent BC person involved in this project so we're getting everything checked off along the way. Regardless, how much would you guys recommend as the max % to retain before final payment? Thanks in advance.
  6. Hi guys, I'm about to start some work on my kitchen and will be knocking down part of a wall. I'm looking for a good pair of safety boots - with steel caps - kind of [link removed] Does anyone have any recommendations? Or know of any offers? Cheers, Chris [This post has been edited to remove a direct advertising link]

  8. Calling all people with past or current experience in timber frame and traditional construction. As part of my degree I am required to research a topic of my choice. My chosen area is; productivity in housebuilding. I am trying to determine why brick and block cavity wall construction still remains the most dominant method of construction for house builders. It would be much appreciated if you or anyone with experience in this field could please complete my short questionnaire. Simply click on the link below, it comprises 12 questions and will take less than 3 minutes of your time to answer. I am more than happy to share the results with anyone who would be interested The information you provide will anonymous and will be treated with the strictest confidence. Please pass on or share to anyone who would be able to help. Thanks in advance. https://www.quicksurveys.com/tqsruntime/main?surveyData=r4lva2rxrwxQVGKkc7VdDr4ScfR0NkzsWxj1PYyl1SP0pqFJPiLmStZ659V5n7R8
