MVHR external vent placement?
Kelvin replied to Alan Ambrose's topic in Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR)
Maybe too late. But if you have detached garage and can extend the waste pipe to it you can take the SVP up through the garage roof. We have a dog bath in the garage and a washing machine so it was easy enough for us to do it. No penetrations through the house roof. -
MVHR Enthalpy Exchangers, BS or SB?
Kelvin replied to LnP's topic in Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR)
Our house got quite dry last winter for a couple of weeks in December (dropped to 34%) Don’t how that compares to others on here. The only thing that seemed bothered by it is the large Fern we have in the living room but I have a small humidifier beside it that comes on automatically. -
We have a private water supply. The planning condition noted we had to have a potable water supply but at no point was it checked that we did actually have one. This is in Scotland. Don’t know about sharing a supply from another house. I’d think the new house will need its own supply.

Independent battery storage comparison??
Kelvin replied to BotusBuild's topic in General Alternative Energy Issues
Getting back to the question. There are a huge number of options in the market so finding somewhere that does a broad comparison isn’t straightforward. Some of the installer companies do fairly comprehensive reviews but they tend to focus on the same few brands which is mostly what they sell. These guys are quite active with videos and comparisons for example: https://www.spiritenergy.co.uk/kb-batteries-residential-solar-energy-storage-overview If you’re not going down the self install route then the first bit of investigation is find installation companies that are relatively close to you and what their feedback is. Narrow that down and that will also narrow down the hardware they are familiar with and will install. This really limited me to Tesla, Fox, SolarEdge and SigEnergy. There were others that did Duracell and the like but I ruled those out.- 19 replies

Independent battery storage comparison??
Kelvin replied to BotusBuild's topic in General Alternative Energy Issues
You’d need to get installation quotes I think rather than the published online prices as there is some discounting going on going through installers. Certainly in my case the hardware costs from the installers were a bit less than any of the online prices I could find. The problem I had with GivEnergy was I couldn’t get any local installers to quote as they have all dropped it. When I contacted GivEnergy to suggest an installer the nearest one they suggested was Manchester (we’re in Perthshire) so I gave up on them as an option.- 19 replies

Independent battery storage comparison??

It might well be aimed at folk running completely off grid systems with no internet connectivity which means Sigenergy can’t keep the firmware up to date. There’s no way to do it manually. It has MODBUS built in so you can access it and monitor it via Home Assistant. You can also control it but I’ve not tried that so don’t know how comprehensive the control is. However, the basic function is still there and locally manageable which you highlighted as an issue. The only system access functionality you lose is the AI control. Many of the current systems rely on some sort of cloud service to manage them. But there are more DiY routes where you aren’t tied the manufacturer. A slightly more likely scenario is the system is tied to the installer regards some of the configuration options including upgrading it as you can’t do it yourself. If they go bust you have to get Sigenergy to transfer installer control to another company. I don’t know how much of an issue that might be. This is also the case with some other systems though.- 19 replies

Was just looking for the pdf. It enters a safe operating mode so it still works just at a reduced capacity. If they ceased trading then you have different problems just like many of the other systems. https://www.sigenergy.com/uploads/en_download/1757241630757894.pdf- 19 replies

You need to update your information on that. Sigenergy have published clarification on what happens after 90 days on no internet connection.- 19 replies

Yes I zoomed in and can see that now.

What’s at the other end of the duct? Could water have got into it from outside? One of my ducts filled up with water before I sealed and buried it as rain was running down the cable that ran into it. I had to make up an extension for my hoover and suck it all out.

Nobody wants to touch my roof for solar and alternative location

Good decision. It looks stunning. -
We are incredibly lucky. We overlook the Strathmore Valley with the Sidlaw Hills in the distance. Because we are quite a way up the North side of the valley we are often above the clouds. It can be quite ethereal at times.

That’s a great thing to keep, ties the old use for the building to the new house. A whisky miniature, packet of shortbread, some pictures of the land as it was, and of us standing on it the day we completed buying it, a print out of the BBC News front page, a wee drawing my other half did with a note, and my favourite joke.

If it’s like Scotland the form includes a list of stuff you need. I had to submit an amendment to the warrant detailing all the changes we made that differed from the warrant prior to completing the approval certificate. Well done in getting this far. Nearly there! -
It’s just time and effort so if you have the time and the inclination do it. I tidied and hoovered everything up as I went every night including areas that would eventually be sealed up. It made starting the next day easier as I wasn’t coming back to a mess. A bit like tidying the kitchen up before going to bed as I hate coming downstairs to anything other than a clean kitchen. Years from now the next owner will be refurbing the upstairs bathroom and when they remove the tiled bath panel they will marvel at the space underneath the bath being completely clean and neat with nothing more than a note from me that says “To the new owner, don’t (expletive deleted) it up” 😂 I also hid a wee box of stuff in a wall. 😂

They are tilt and turn windows. We never use them as doors. We have them in all the downstairs rooms as they are a means of escape in case of fire. That particular one is great for getting the heat out as we have a Velux above the stairs and the heat is quite quickly funnelled out. Long story short. The slider should have been longer but we wanted it 3G and because it’s so big it’s also laminated. Consequently it’s heavy. The timber kit company also supplied and fitted the windows but refused to take responsibility for installing that window due to the weight (they had apparently a few examples of significant problems with them in other builds) . We finally agreed on a size they would fit and that we were happy with. Unfortunately it meant that the tilt and turn window that should have been there was going to be over 1m wide. As it’s inward opening it meant moving the island back into the room a bit to stop the window fouling the island or hinged the other side block the stairs if it was open. Also because it’s not technically a door the threshold isn’t flush so you’d be stepping over the frame or in reality tripping over it. Hence fitting the double outward opening French doors. We use that door all the time so the tilt and turn wouldn’t have worked.

We have found open plan living has taken a while to adjust to. Neither of us are particularly tidy although I’m tidier than my other half who has a tendency to use every flat surface as a shelf.
