Just read that MVHR ducting should be cleaned every few years. Anyone actually planning to do this and if so how? Long tickle sticks? Robot duct scrubbers? Fat rats? Very small child chimney sweeps? Anyone adding inspection chambers in the ducting to allow easier mid-pipe length access? Anyone fancy setting up a MVHR duct cleaning company?

My house is going green - mould on inside blockwork
readiescards replied to readiescards's topic in Brick & Block
Yes indeed I so wish I could. We are getting there slowly. The main source of damp in these walls is the fact that the first floor is down 3 months ago but there was no roof covering (until last week) so the heavy rain in recent days lands on the first floor and then drains by running down the small gap between flooring and wall. Hopefully now roof covered (tiles on this week I think) it will be able to recover - if the sun comes out and stays out this summer that is! -

Phew. Thank you! -
I know it has rain and rained but this green mould on the inside of my part built dwelling looks rather concerning. This green mould is both on this internal wall and on another wall that is external. I also have black mould appearing on the first floor Posi joists Is green and black mould normal during a wet build?

Brought one of these from Everbuying (might be cheaper elsewhere not looked) http://www.everbuying.net/product1166384.html Proving very useful for inspecting workmanship on site. Pros: cheap (£10 and free shipping (2-3 weeks)) works with my Nexus5 Android phone via the related App has built in switchable LED lights good pictures long lead comes with some extra bits and bobs (not yet used) IP67 waterproof Cons the clever built in USB and micro USB adapter is heavy - meaning it slips out of the Nexus socket easily (hence I use a little micro to USB female adapter) each picture has a small watermark saying 'camerafi.com on it 640 x 480 might not be best available - but fine for me on the move you need to hold the usb connection in the phone with one hand (as the weight of 5m cable pulls it out) while directing camera with other hand FYI no connection with Everbuying or the supplier

Yes I know from ebuild threads that many people have installed log burners fired them up once, cooked themselves and never used them again in super insulated houses. As my house will be well insulated but not super insulated and I have a free source of wood, I've tried and failed to find a log burner BOILER stove that limits the heat to the room, is direct air, room sealed, found one but SWMBO rejected it. So I'm now looking for a DRY stove that is: low output (sub 5kW say) square black "traditional looking" - what ever that is direct air feed Question: does it have to be 'room sealed' to be allowed by building control in a property with no trickle vents and a MVHR? Or can the 'secondary air' be taken from the room? A local guy in a well insulated house with a MVHR, just uses the MVHR fresh air to feed his log burner and seems quite happy with that!

Visited Home & Hearth at the weekend and was shown a log burner design specifically for low heat demand passiv houses, the Woodfire Passiv from these guys: http://www.firepowerheating.co.uk/hearth-and-homes-exhibition-2016 Seemed neat: 2kW room 9 kW water direct air only room sealed However it failed the SWMBO 'must look right' test - sorry no photo as the show had a big sign at the front entrance saying no photos allowed. That'll be me back to square one then. PS. I'm in no way associated with Firepower heating but they have been jolly helpful and seem a friendly bunch.

At £24k connection I'm looking at it very seriously and have got two companies keen to supply a one-stop solution (so no passing the buck if it fails) with both putting together detail studies. New battery solutions keep coming to the market and huge amounts of money are being invested in mega battery factories so It might not make sense today but very soon I think (hope!) it will.

Very cheap MVHR
readiescards replied to sphannaby's topic in Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR)
Would love to see that wiring diagram please -
The spec for my top floor ceiling is U value of 0.10 W/m2k - therefore I'm looking for a decent loft hatch and ladder to match and would appreciated any suggestions FYI I should be using it every few months to clean the MVHR unit so easy to use is more important than cost Thanks

Anyone else bidding?

Hi to everyone, I've missed ya! Me: building large 3 bed on family farm in rural Lincolnshire using a local builder for most aspects, used ebuild to help review the build and guide it towards more modern sustainable efficient practices I reckon the advice on ebuild saved me many many pound notes so I am happy to contribute towards this new site. Just tell me how!
