Try your neighbour first, if not then I think they will let it flow under your house, I’ve seen it happen a few times.

Been looking into thin bed joints for my brick facade, I think with uniform bricks it will look superb. Now this is a long shot, but it would be great if people have experience or any input to this. There are a few solutions offered on the internet, from no viable joints to traditional thin mortar joints. The thinnest results come from using special bricks or using a glue. One of the bricks I have seen https://www.vandersandengroup.co.uk/bricks/en-gb/vandersanden-range-bricks/zeror-traditionally-laid-brick-joint-free-appearance Other solution is to go with the traditional method. Any input would be appreciated as I don't think this is very common, and it could become a total nightmare!

Credit/Debit Reward Cards, Discounts etc
Sjk replied to Ferdinand's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Is there a current preferred credit card for rewards/cashback? I have looked at the BA AMEX card before, at the moment they have 25k avios points and a 2 for 1 companion voucher that would be quite easy to achieve. I think when I looked before it didn't really work out, because of restrictions. ticket prices and the credit card annual fee.- 151 replies

Removing hardstanding up against a 3rd party wall

There is about 50sqm of the stuff. Although it’s got disaster written all over it. Joe. Let me guess, a localised tectonic shift? -

Joe I have thought about it, the actual job looks fun so I'd love to do it myself, how doesnt want a go in an excavator :D. I have also been quoted some crazy prices, from the people who actually return calls and emails I could do 90% of it and leave the remainder to them hmmm. -
Removing hardstanding up against a 3rd party wall

They agree the wall is boundary, all the paperwork shows the wall is the boundary, logical reasoning says it’s the boundary. As I said before there is no one disputing the boundary. Im all concerned about is not taking out their kitchen ha -
Removing hardstanding up against a 3rd party wall
Sjk replied to Sjk's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
The house is Victorian and has been there about 100 years longer than the drive, I hope this will make it easier. Not concerned about the boundaries (maybe I should be) it’s clear from the title that it is where the wall, although agree with JSHarris. No one is disputing that the boundary, not even the neighbours. -

I did consider a hand held, wasn’t sure it would get through it though? Boundary is their wall. -
At the moment there is a heavy duty drive which goes along side another persons house. Im going to hire an excavator and take the whole lot up, now I’m a little concerned that I could very easy damage their wall when doing this. It is about 20cms of concrete and tarmac on top of that, any tips for getting the section close to their house up without taking the side of their house down?

Ah yes, Odour report Contamination report Flood/drainage risk report 2 Noise reports Archaeology DBA, Trenching and likely watching brief Soo much money spent , but what can you do.

Interesting re splitting the unit, I will have to do some research on that. Ooh financing a large unit and renting out the parts you don’t need, I will have to look into the finances of this!

Oh yes parking as an absolute must. You are correct, I looked at a police station and nhs buildings. The police station was large so rates would have been eye watering, I feared the nhs building would have required a some expensive remodelling. Although I think it was sold for a large some to a developer. I understand if you know a government building is unused you can ask them to sell it to you.

Seems madness considering the ups and downs of my self build project. However, over the last year I have been trying to find a “new” office for my accountancy practice, we are currently in a house that’s been converted into an office, which isn’t ideal. I wanted it to be within 3 miles of my house but was willing to go up to 10 miles away. It had to be somewhere around 1000sqft, give or take 500sqft. I wanted it to be well positioned if possible for visibility and for the building to not be an eye sore. It seems this is just too much to ask. I’m now considering buying a plot and having a glass/contemporary style office built. Perhaps I am being too picky.

Will this make your architect very conservative? -
Will need a more specialist lender, normally at higher rates of interest. Could be stamp duty saving though..

Just read your post again, 20k-100k is eye watering! I suppose they got very excited about the old water mill . Wonder if the site was ever developed? I have been looking at screw foundations, the damage should be minimal as they are tiny compared to other piled solutions. Very disappointing to hear that
-
Interesting, I had considered Screw Pile Foundations as they are advertised as being cheap and quick for new residential builds.

We’ve done a fair few for clients, and a lot of preparation for my own. Feel free to message me on here if I can be of help. -
I’ve had some preliminary feedback from my archaeologist today. They were suggesting raft, but my architect was against this solution for some reason. They are saying at the moment they are saying there is 200mum to play with, although I am waiting for them to clarify if that is on top of the hard standing which must be at least 200mm itself. Im feeling screwed!!

Hi all, Another day another question! I'm going around the houses (pun) with acceptable materials, the planners like the idea of modern materials, however the house is quite conventional. I think grey aluminium frame windows look excellent in a contemporary build, or with white render but I'm not inconvenienced it looks good with red brickwork. Am I wrong?

Cheers guys, thanks a lot!

Hi all, I have a concern I have been thinking about for a while, so would be appreciated to have someone else's view. If all goes well I'll be starting my new build very soon, I'm going over all the details at the moment. I had planned on the downstairs loo being on the same wall as the bathrooms upstairs, makes sense really. However, this means the living room and the kitchen will be separated by the loo. I'm thinking a much better idea would be to have it on the opposite wall so I can have an open plan living, dining and kitchen area. This means the loo will be on the wall which the drive way is on, if the waste pipe is sticking out I'm concerned it will make parking harder, causing either damage to the pipe or we will be tripping up over it. Would it be possible to have the waste pipe go under the house so it does not obstruct the driveway? Many thanks Ive attached a VERY rough drawing, if it helps
