Today's progress not massive but getting closer. We are on the hunt for a set of graded appliances so we can have the full champagne for lemonade experience. Looking for a neff steam oven, pyro oven, induction hob and either a microwave or a coffee machine subject to budget! Anyway on with the photos. The breakfast bar is made. Just need to fab up an angle iron frame in 3mm box to get the levels spot on. -

If its Zigbee, then something like a Vera controller may well be able to talk to it? -

What do you want to know? We have a Godmorgan going in at the moment - seems a nice quality bit of kit so far. As mentioned its a fair bit cheaper, in fact the cabinet saving more than paid for the extra tap needed. Any specific concerns? -
Are there steels involved? Are you notching under or over the steels? i 'upset' our builders by insisting we did these differently in different bits of the house. End result is right though.

Yes, we have it on the Map wall, on one of our sons rooms walls and one wall in the utility. Bit spendy at about a ton a bag but it adds a nice feature and a sense of fun.

Stick a jemmy down the back and rip it down? Would the lads that put it up have take them out? I suspect not....- 29 replies

Or to think of it another way, every one of us here has already placed a much bigger bet on ourselves to build a house than whether we can cut a 300quid bit of stone. :-) -

The hardest issue is moving it as it had the sink and hob cut outs in it. We basically ratchet strapped it to some big timber as a frame and moved it with a couple of blokes in my 70's vee dub camper.. in terms of bricking it, new it cost 3-4K secondhand I gave £300 for it. Had a practice on some spare upstand and just went for it. He who dares rodders! He who dares! -

Its pretty easy to cut, horribly messy but easy. I taped it up with masking tape, then wetted it with a plant skoosher and ran a cut along with the grinder by hand, then filled the cut with water and went progressively deeper. Naturally at the corners you cannot join the cuts all the way down. So I made sure they were connected at the top and as deep as possible we'll supported the bits I wanted to keep then gently knocked the remainder out. Quick wazz round with the grinder to tidy up after. -

The lights are an invention born of necessity. This being an ikea kitchen and the granite having been from something else means it's about 40mm shy of the wall. Hence the build of a light bar with 30mm rod and the upstand... The oak detail covers a multitude of sins. If the cuts had gone badly I would have put it round those edges and just chiselled the oak to fit the granite. -

Good days work today. Granite dry fitted. Turns out it's not to bad to work with. Just used a 4.5'' grinder with a diamond blade and a plant sprayer to keep it wet. -

So we started with a late 70's bungalow, oil fired central heating. Double glazed. Rated at 53 on the plan so a 'E'. During the build we have dug out the slab and insulated to building regs (I know! But there just wasn't space to get more than 70mm in) We haven't filled the cavities, but we have added 60mm internal insulation on all walls, we are mostly LED lit and we are fully triple glazed. 300mm in the loft. I'm not expecting miracles but what could it / should it be?

Well today is the day for the granite to go in for a test fit. Looking at the unit tops the ikea units have a metal bracket that the worktop runs on. Not ideal for the granite so I pooped into ikea and bought some more internal drawer fronts. At 55cm they are the perfect length for adding onto the side of the cabinet at metal rail height to give a nice level surface for the stone. pleasingly they also look pretty 'factory'. Time will tell how much of a wobble we need design out on this run of granite. One end is 57cm and the other is 59cm.. -
Yes - this is true, and I think its the crux of why builders can't estimate. They can do the job, its just they don't know how they will do it.

Following on from this there is another benefit - I've been on some anti-anxiety drugs for about 4-5mths now. The net benefit apart from some more mental clarity is that i'm much more comfortable walking about up on the top of the scaffold :-)

The man who has one house to live in and one house part built is better off than the man with one house to live in. Panic yee not!

Absolutely, we've had a rough ride this year with some other personal issues on top of issues with financing the build. What we've always come back to is an old project management adage control 'Cost / Quality / Time' pick any two. We are controlling costs and quality - therefore the timeline can slide. If you constrain all of them its a losing battle, it can't be done. Also - we are nearly all blokes here, if its getting out of hand have a chat to your GP, friends or family not just the bar maid.

@recoveringacademic Let us know when you've prepped the hangers, I suspect we can round up a few bods to throw the joists in with you. Think there are a few of us in the area.

Well excitingly the granite has turned out to be less than square. This will take a little light engineering... bit of prototyping gives a plan. We'll pull the upstand forward to hide the wobble and put the light bar behind it. I've picked up 12 drawer fittings to use as strengthning bars in the carcasses so hopefully we'll have a trial fit at the weekend. -
Your always welcome to pop up to ours with Debbie for a spot of insipration keep meaning to drop past but everytime i'm on that road its either dark or chucking it down...
