  1. I can do that. But when you say terminate the earth somewhere, what exactly do you mean??? Thanks
  2. So I guess the fan is double insulated therefore not requiring an earth? Live and Neutral and earth cable wired into old fan and disappearing into ceiling void (that I can't access) so can I simply 'splice' the new plug wires into the one that's hanging from the ceiling void and if so what do i do with the earth ? (see earlier image of white cable)
  3. Photo showing old fans wiring. New one does have a plug with brown and blue stripped wires at the other end. There's no earth on the new fan either. I want to completely remove the old fan anyway, so how do i 'cap' off the white cable to make it safe so i can turn the mains power back on?
  4. It does have a plug but it's taking the old one out I'm not sure about as is 15 years old so might be hard wired? If I turned the mains off I shoukd be ok to unwired it?? But you're right about having to ask!
  5. Hi Do I need an electrician to replace an old intergrated extractor fan? I'm very competent DIYer but not with electrics. My new extractor is like for like so can I just copy the wiring? Anything specific I need to be aware of...Except turning off at the fuse box!

Oh, and sand and seal the edges to within an inch of their lives

    MDF painting error

Dont over think...... Accept that as a DIYer with basic tools it'll not be perfect. Measure, measure and measure again. Be patient! Don't use Farrow an Ball Eggshell paint!! Seal the MDF....I forgot to. Don't use 6mm stripwood, too unstable, it warps and cups. Use 9mm mdf for the panel and 6mm for the rails ect to make 22mm'ish thick doors. Ideally have the rails ect machined if you don't have the capacity. Get an accurate level!

    MDF painting error

In the end I put the doors in the sun which helped to dry out more. Tge next day they were pretty dry, sanded down with 120 grit and just applied a second top coat. Will now wait 24hours before final coat....absolute pain and an email on its way to FB with feedback!!

    MDF painting error

Fair enough! Must admit I'm a huge fan of FB on wall/ emulsion, used it fo years but I won't be using eggshell again....its awful!
  11. Hi I've painted MDF kitchen cabinet doors that I've made but didn't realise they should be sealed prior! Ive painted using Farrow and ball eggshell and a basic undercoat. 12hrs later its still tacky. Can I seal retrospectively? Any advice??
  12. Figured it out now. Old fashioned trial and error.
  13. Thanks guys for the hinge advice. Next problem is making a square frame! I'm fitting the bifolds doors into an existing alcove. The doors are dead square. I've rebated the hinges into the frame. I screwed the frame verticals to the left and right walls. The level says they're straight but the doors don't! What am i doing wrong?
  14. Great suggestions.....thanks. I'll post the finished article if I think it will stand scrutiny!
  15. Hi, it's the hinges for the door to door that I'm struggling with, not door to frame. I've got a total mental block on those hinges! Can't see in my head how they work??? Would these work ( or similar) I would recess into the inside face of the doors and also rout a vertical groove to recess the knuckle. Would that work?
  16. So would i be looking at 38mm hinge to fit an 18mm think door edge. I don't understand how they are measured and advertised
  17. Also think I've made them too thin....18mm! Am I screwed?
  18. Hi Made my own W30mm x H1050mm MDF doors to create 2x V bifold doors. Not using a track ( or should I?) What hinges do I use? Don't want to use euro hinges so would prefer traditional looking hinges. Any more tips much appreciated!!
  19. TonyT.....I did squish it....FLAT! Managed to get small mole grips in and flattened it good and proper! Still able to drill smaller hole and used an m4 screw and somehow it worked! Bloody nightmare, need fingers thin as knitting needles Thanks though
  20. Do having got all the cables back in I've now stripped one screw! It's m3.5. I bought m4 but there's no way on gods green earth I'm taking the socket off to drill the lug bigger. What are my options?
  21. Hi, I'm trying to put back an existing cooker socket but what are these two black wires and where do they connect too? Something to do with the red light. They're just floating around in there! Does it matter if the earth, that goes into the bottom right terminal touches the black? Having a bitch trying yo get 3 earth wires to stay put in the terminal....they are so thick...any advice please??

    Wood glue

Hi Best wood glue for wood to MDF for large areas....ta!
  23. Another question if anyone is free....I'm making the doors and frame to o fit into an existing apperture. The walls read square according to my level....so, do I make the frame and then fit it into the aperture or make the frame insitu and hope my level and fitting is accurate enough that it is square? Thanks!
  24. Hi Russell.....I'm nothing more than a competentish DIYer and not the least confident! but I'm having a crack at it....using rudimentary knowledge, skills and tools. just tapping into the wealth of experience on this site. I do overthink as I want to do jobs as right and I can't afford for them to fail 🥲 Thanks for your input, much appreciated.
  25. Russel, yes, shaker style. I'll make them from MDF with strip wood for the trim. Won't the doors drop overtime without a track? Did you use a top track? I've bought one but can return it. Anymore advice gratefully received. Thanks so much.
