Copper or Aluminium nails for slate?
bassanclan replied to Construction Channel's topic in Roofing, Tiling & Slating
You will probably get 50-60 years out of them, but you might see the rust staining before that. That's how bodgit and scarper roofers would do it -

Roofing accessory suppliers?
bassanclan replied to Construction Channel's topic in Roofing, Tiling & Slating
+1 for roofing superstore, nit sure if that's the same as Stirling build, but that's worth a look, however my favourite is Ashbrook roofing. Having said that if you have an SIG roofing nearby they will match prices- 5 replies

Full Planning Permission Approved - Unsure of what to do now?
bassanclan replied to Gimp's topic in Planning Permission
A local builder to me is desperate to build a house and has said if I bought the land, he would build the house and we'd split the profit. Obviously it depends on the individual circumstances etc, but a joint venture with a builder might be a solution -
Full Planning Permission Approved - Unsure of what to do now?

I think your first stop is to get a couple of realistic valuations as to the value of the land, until you know that you can't make any informed decision. -
I was thinking of having open pipe anyway. I'm following this basic layout http://www.heatweb.co.uk/products/ds18/ but with two extra tappings for 2 seperate UFH manifolds - the max size tank they make is 500 litres, hence why I am looking at Newark Cylinders What benefit would there be if the radiator/ufh/wbs/gas boiler system was sealed/pressurised?
-
I spoke to Mark at Newark and he was very helpful. The restriction he has is finding couriers that will ship over 2.4m (when packaged), however I could collect, which solves that problem. Anything is possible, but to keep the tank made from one sheet of stainless steel the max height is 2400, but a 2400x600 tank will give me around 750litres internal storage. Just waiting for him to price it up. I have also asked for a quote from thecylindercompany which are near Ashton under lyme, but I guess they are a middle-man.
-
Newark might be a good option. I will ring up and find out. I still think I prefer the idea of an external PHE though.

There is the Jaspi GTV 700 http://jaspi.uk/gtv.html but then the hot water in/out is in 22mm again
-
I'm struggling to find thermal stores over 500l which are under 800mm wide. (unless they have no insulation and then what is the point!)
-
So it turned out that the fresh water module plate heat exchanger is only 22mm. However I have found a very similar system made by Lovato distributed by www.woodboilersupplies.co.uk but with 1" connections rather than 3/4" I will investigate more tomorrow.
-
The wood burning stove manufacturers give this layout with their "neutraliser" to connect a wood burner to an unvented cylinder, which was my initial starting point, but the thermal store seemed like a "proper" solution. I don't really have room for a decent sized buffer tank and seperate uvc unless they make them stackable? layout2.pdf

I've already put some steels up in the loft which will carry the weight of the accumulator. I am going to have to stick in another steel at first floor level to take the weight of the thermal store I am looking at a few other manufacturers with a view to getting a 700 litre store, but I am restricted by a diameter of approx 750mm
-
Yes the cold water accumulator is to help boost the flow rate. I don't know about the size of the plate heat exchanger connections, it is not detailed on the spec sheet, I will ring up and find out tomorrow, but it says it is capable of 45 litres per minute. I'm also looking at the Joule Cyclone Thermal Store 2.0 which can get flow rates up to 33 litres per minute. Apparently you can fit two plate heat exchangers if you want to increase flow rates.

I am looking for feedback and comments on the design of this heating system. 5/6 bedroom - 2 ensuites with showers, 1 bathroom with a bath, 1 bathroom with a bath and a shower, 1 ground floor shower room Boiler - mains gas - Ideal Mexico 28Kw (already insitu fitted in boiler room circa 2012) PV - 4KW facing SSW Wood burning stove - Dunsley Yorkshire multifuel with back boiler (up to 7.9KW to water) (to be located in lounge) Thermal Store - Xcel heat bank 500litre (to be located in airing cupboard) with external heat plate exchanger. Tappings for UFH for ground floor and first floor (yellow areas) Cold water accumulator - 500litre to be fitted in the loft system design.pdf Incoming water is approx 2.5bar static and 18 litres per minute. The desire is to be able to run 3 showers @ 10-12 litres p/m each simultaneously. Ideally in the winter the wood burner will be a lot, heating up the thermal store and during the summer the PV will be diverted to heat the thermal store

The Hanson Castle multicem has got some plasticiser already in it to make it easier to use. I would prefer Hanson Castle Multi to Blue Circle if they were a similar price. I avoid Quinn cement. You could get Blue Circle cement from Wickes for £3.19+vat (trade discount & you buy 3), so I would want a decent discount if I was buying a lot more.

If there is beautiful views over open countryside, with no road noise then it is something you would enjoy being top hung, but otherwise it's probably not worth the extra cost. Perhaps keep the top hung rooflight for only the most used/master/lounge etc

I always use a local demolition/ recycling place. They sell gravel in either 10 or 20mm sizes, its very similar to golden gravel, but I get as much as I can on the back of my truck for £20 cash. If I put 2 tonnes on the back it would work out at £10 a tonne, but obviously I wouldn't as that would put me over weight!

I haven't any experience with any, but I will be painting my sand and cement render with a clear self cleaning silicone based paint. Have you considered the self cleaning paints such as Sto Lotusan?
-
You may as well get softwood linings, eg Benchmarx have them at £8.99+vat, but in a refurb situation you may have to buy timber e.g. 100x32 PSE and make your own linings.

Makes me grateful for my bricklayer & labourer son who laid 3-400 bricks a day. £120+£100 a day (cash)

Tarmac topflow hz (used to be known as Agilia) cost me £143+vat per cubic m. Its liquid structural concrete, not screed, but similarly millpond flat. I also hired a concrete pump which you might need to factor in

Building Regs requesting ramp approach
bassanclan replied to hmpmarketing's topic in Building Regulations
Make your level access to a sisde or back door? Build the ramp ot the front door from type1 and slabs laid on sand, get it approved by BC then rip it out and build your preferred steps? -
I thought that the property was to rent out and eventually sell? The return on the 50mm celotex will surely not be worthwhile. You've gone far beyond what people would normally expect with the 100mm rockwool and might even devalue the property with the shorter doors. could the 50mm celotex not go under the floorboards too?
