  1. Big difference I suppose if it's a self builder doing it for themselves where they can invest free time. Stick around and marvel at the anal attention to detail! I bet the average first time buyer wants to move in and be up and running? Sadly I bet I know where the majority would go if you offered a budget kitchen and MVHR or a top spec kitchen and draughts!
  2. See, we've already found a common ground! Have you been in a proper passive house! Difficult to describe but dead quiet, draught free, coccoon like almost. That was with no heating. The only one I have been in hadn't got the MVHR running but I love the idea of a majorly dust free house and breathing FRESH, clean air. I'm in a 30's bungalow with multiple Jerry built extensions currently breathing RAT. Trust me it's 'kin grim!
  3. Less of this get thee behind me Satan! Let's aim for a religious conversion I say!
  4. CEF do Aico intumescent gaskets in different sizes if anyone needs them. Meant to go in the back of back boxes, roses etc.
  5. It's not finished is it?
  6. I remember you going to Live rather than SBS. Compacts would have saved you a lot of wiring there. Also, treat yourself to a box of these: https://uk.rs-online.com/mobile/p/cable-marking-kits/9140592/ Looks great though.
  7. Who's with me on kidnap and leaving him stripped naked in one of his houses o'night with no heating or one of the passive ones on here?
  8. My thoughts exactly! It's good here in the cheap seats! I have learnt though that I aspire to living in a niche house however!
  9. @Fredd cat/pigeons springs to mind? @PeterStarck's house. Timber frame with circa 16" thick icynene filled walls. Throughout his winter build he had a 2 or 3kW heater on occasionally.....for the whole house! I've been in plenty of new builds and his and know where I'd rather live. Have you shared your views on MVHR yet?
  10. I think the majority on here are looking long term and energy efficiency. Add in the "self" bit as in they can do (& enjoy? ) a lot of the labouring themselves. Look at some of the real perfectionists on here and the crux is it's not always about the money. Some self build for the journey and / or the sheer achievement. Read some of the comments ref peoples mission to make their place airtight and hunt down potential loss points. A for profit builder probably doesn't really care about detail or running out of half a metre of airtight tape!

@swisscheese, for your floor tiles try the "20 yr old / first house /not got a pot to pi$$ in method". Worked for me and still looks good after 30 years thanks to a liberal application of Thompson's at the time: You will need the side of an old faux woodgrain wardrobe to make the mould and a can of WD40! A friendly neighbour helps too!
  12. I'm betting you're not building passive homes?

@PeterStarck's house looks that precise it's like the CAD rendering has been superimposed on a plot photograph! I used some of that A1 membrane repairing a bit on my roof...it's the ONLY similarity!
  14. If only! The bathroom would go too if that happened. I'll dream on.

I wonder what a water jet company would charge to cut a load of bricks if you supplied them in a wooden "rack (s)"?
  16. Leave me alone I'm not well! Very similar to the plans I found a couple of months ago. More projects? Had the conversation the other night will we even be able to continue living where we do in years to come. Sh!t pensions, fuel inefficient house etc. Ongoing January blues I think. Then I got ill.
  17. You could go to the trouble of making everything accessible via removeable panels but it's a long trek! What I've learnt from my bath saga: This might help @Construction Channel, foamed in to keep the fall before concreting Basin goes into the 32mm tee via an anti syphon trap. All in solvent weld: My waste goes 40 to 50. Think 50 all the way from the trap would have been better. Bath empties OK but could be quicker: But I wanted flexibility on the trap. Being the big, gangly lump that I am I will occasionally knock the pop up waste knob with my knee (not unpleasant ). Tbh I don't like the tap position. Trying to relax, if I want more hot in the bath I have to make sure my knee's out of the way to avoid getting scalded. A TMV is on the to do list.
  18. Can't remember if it was £6 or £8k and a few years ago too. AND he had to supply them with the SWA - I gave it to him. No certs provided either.
  19. It's when the car park attendant says "You shouldn't have turned off the 249 mate...Sheppey's straight on!".
  20. PV, PV batteries, funeral plan, 2G windows and doors...to replace existing 2G windows and doors. (His old front door now my new back door! ). Annual Internet support, hot tub...paid CASH???
  21. Just paid a very quick visit to Buildit Live as just down the road from me. Tbh 99% of it out of my league from the Cayennes in the car park to the oak frame "whatever" stands, acres of window companies and heat pump pushers. The hand made clay tile outfits confirmed my position in the cheap seats! Only really went to say hello to @AndyT which I did. Missed him on the first pass as there were a good few people around him waiting to talk about Sunamp. My mate also apparently spoke to him earlier in the day. Figured I can ask most of my questions via here and didn't want to take up too much of his time as it was so busy.
  22. He is on the highest tarrif having been an early adopter of PV.
  23. Nowadays surely you could hack of the insulation and repair with gun foam?
