  1. Makes it a bit easier for consumers to follow and a bit harder for retailers to get rid of old stock.
  2. Great - Thanks
  3. @Alphonsox can you recommend a make of electric underfloor heating?
  4. Hi, I'm thinking of going with Rehau Total70C triple glazed uPVC windows, with a height of 1500mm. The documentation on the Rehau website suggests a maximum for side hung openings of 900x1500mm (WxH). I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has used these frames with 3G and a height of 1500mm and whether they have functioned properly in day to day use. Thanks
  5. Looking at that Velfac installation document linked to above there are 2 ways to fix the windows, and option 1 appears to be through the frame.
  6. I must confess to not fully understanding all the results displayed above - could some kind soul please explain them to me in very simple terms? e.g. Space heating requirement of 6,922 kWh/year...does this mean using average external temperatures I will need to purchase 6,922 kWh each year (from oil, gas or electric supplier) to maintain a constant internal temp of 20 degrees?
  7. This sounds like a sensible approach, if you know what you're doing. However the problem would then be finding someone to service the ASHP in the future.
  8. When looking for cost reductions in our specification we replaced the ASHP with Oil fired heating and the build cost was reduced by £11,500....I know, I nearly fell over too!!
  9. I noticed the Economy 10 tariff mentioned elsewhere and thought it would be perfect for my needs if we went electric for a year, but as you correctly point out, it doesn't appear to be available in the land of the "Hot Press".
  10. It's been a while but I'd like to resurrect this thread if I may, as I now have more information and a few decisions made... We've ruled out ASHP due mainly to cost of install and lack of experienced engineers available to service it going forward. We've ruled out a wood burning stove and are now opting for a 5kW room sealed gas fire (i.e. it will have it's own external air supply so won't interfere with MVHR) as a secondary heat source. We've ruled out PV for the foreseeable future. We're having UFH downstairs and radiators upstairs We will have a Gas system boiler and plan is to use mains gas when it arrives 1 year after the build is due to finish Therefore the main decision I need help with is how to heat the UFH & DHW for the year before mains gas arrives, Economy 7, Economy 10, LPG etc... Our kWh requirements are shown below using both @JSHarris's excellent Fabric & Ventilation Heat Loss spreadsheet and our revised (as designed) SAP report. January heat energy input for minimum OAT = 1876 kWh Revised (as designed) SAP report; Water heating - 2,573 kWh/year Space heating - 6,922 kWh/year Thanks
  11. @JSHarris is there a unit that you would recommend instead of GU10 base LEDs?
  12. Hi @jack, We're looking for Lift & Slide doors to fill a 5.6m wide x 2.4m high opening and I was wondering if you could tell me who supplied your lift & slide door please and if you have any photos of it, I would really appreciate seeing them. Thanks JohnW
  13. Class big window, who did you get your windows from? (looks like the dog is about to launch himself out through it) Thanks for sharing.
  14. Thanks @le-cerveau, I'm not sure how that would work at the corner, have you any photos of yours to help me visualise?
  15. @Declan52, it must be a big window, what are the dimensions?
  16. Thanks @JSHarris, downstairs we moved away from bifolds doors to lift & slide for the very same reason, so I take your point about bifold windows.
  17. Thanks @Declan52, when you say "fully glazed", do you mean no openings at all?
  18. Thanks @Russell griffiths, I think I could live with sliding windows but having checked Building regulations I will have to have some sort of barrier to raise the bottom of the opening from 900mm to 1100mm which I feel defeats the purpose of having the window fully opened, so I may go back to the drawing board. I hadn't heard of "servery windows" but googling them, they look very interesting, thanks.
  19. Thanks @JSHarris, I hadn't thought about the restrictors, although I assume they could be put in place if for example, we have a 3 x 800mm panel bifold system with the 1st panel behaving like a traffic door/window? It's certainly something I will be asking suppliers when I find one that does supply bifold windows. Regarding the height from the floor, the window sill will be at 900mm (so no need for toughened safety glass) and the head of the window at 2400mm. Our ceilings will be 2600mm. I'll have to check the rules relating to fully opening apertures.
  20. Hi, We have 2 corner windows, Ground floor & First floor same sized opening. The photo shows the Ground floor, the First floor opening will be directly above it. The opening dimensions are 1500mm tall and 2400mm wide each side. We would like to be able to fully open the First floor set and the only thing I can think of is a short set of glazed bifold doors i.e 1500mm tall. So my questions are; Is it possible to get bifold windows and if so can anyone recommend a supplier Is there a solution other than bifold? I would appreciate any ideas of suitable products that would allow us to open the space fully. Thanks John
  21. Thanks for all the great advice & suggestions. I think the best way forward is to use a couple of coats of masonry paint as suggested and see how that goes. Thanks
  22. Will this stop it blowing off if rain/moisture is getting in via the neighbours side?
  23. Yeah, we're on good terms and it shouldn't be a problem. I'm more concerned with rain/moisture getting into the wall on the neighbours side and blowing my render off.
  24. My neighbour has built a new block wall and I would like to render my side to tidy it up. I'm pretty sure my neighbour won't render his side and will leave it as exposed block. Am I wise rendering my side?
  25. Thanks @chrisb great tip.
