At the end of the day if the self builder is happy with his design who can tell them they are wrong?, others may have a view but they don’t have to live there. I am very happy with what I designed but I am sure it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. Telling self builders if they design it themselves they will end up with garbage is pompous crap.
I take exception to that, I designed my build completely and I am a self builder. Yes I am sure some are not able to do this but I recommend people write themselves a wish list (I did this myself) as a starting point. As others have done post your ideas here and there is enough knowledge collectively to guide your design. If calcs are required then BC will ask fir them (I had no calcs done at all).
I ran the buffer at 35’ , UFH at 25’ and the ASHP runs at one temp, set for DHW at 48’ so there were temp gradients to aid efficiency. My tank stat is halfway up as that’s where the socket was.
It was our own Jeremy that said his PV income even paid for his council tax so his was a “free” house to run so it can be done.
edit, yes I know FIT is no longer what it was.
I have a buffer tank (80 litre) which calls for heat with a tank stat set to 35’ when the heating is on (winter), a room stat (hallway) starts the manifold pump to draw that heat into the slab, the manifold blender winds it down to 25’. The only downside is the buffer is permanently heated in the winter but insulated well and any heat leak stays within the house.
Actually I have an unlimited supply of cow muck and been reading that it’s just as good as horse muck if rotten down well so it’s piled up under an old carpet “ageing “
When I lived in Shropshire the ground about 300mm down was pure sand, never found the bottom, easy to dig founds and what came out I blinded the hardcore with. What I’ve got now is brick hard clay, just tried planting some plants and I needed a hammer to break up the clods, will take years of organic matter to get it better.
+1 to what @PeterW says above, perhaps I was lucky but my builders were brilliant, i worked with them, helped where possible, kept out if their way when required, made the brews and it paid dividends in their attitude to their work 👍
Funnily enough I was told about the 600mm but mine is only 100mm and i Put a grill on it (to stop mice and leaves and it’s fine), yes you have to be careful about snow I guess (if it ever happens again with global warming 🤷♂️
I ran a 4 metre underfloor air feed pipe (110mm drain pipe) within the insulation layer but luckily the outside ground level was low enough to not have a “u” section, in fact I sloped it down towards the outside in case any moisture found it’s way in there.
