  1. Attached is the picture of a cable connecting a summer house. It passes through the shrubs at the border. Is this allowed? There is a further cable going further from the summer house to the greenhouse, again, the picture is attached.
  2. Hi, Just trying to understand whether it is possible to use raft for 3m by 11m full width rear extension, where the main house has standard strip foundations. Did a quick search and it seems a viable option subject to ground conditions, is that so? And if yes, does it make sense to try and pour it at the same time as the main house slab replacement?
  3. @Patrick, I agree with pretty much everything you said. Just wanted to see the total.
  4. Thank you, @Patrick This translates into roughly £20/m2 installed, i.e. £4000 for the 200m2 of walls plus similar sum for a roof. Not cheap but probably OK for the whole house insulation (apart from the slab)?

  6. I instinctively don't trust the headlines in the Mail but the summary is quite a chilling reading. What the Labour Socialist government need to do...
  7. You can specify the sizes as you draw a rectangle, comma separated IIRC, or you can resize after you drew a line and again specify the size. For the wall width there are several ways. I usually use the tape measure tool to create a marker for the required distance, then draw a line through this marker. There are very useful walk-through videos showing the basics of house design in SketchUp, can't recommend enough as a starting point.
  8. When you start drawing a line you can actually type in the length. You can use a tape measure tool to check the size at any point, just need to be able to select the points correctly. You can also add dimensions so that if you change the length of something it is reflected - something I missed a lot in SweetHome3D.
  9. Well, you are right, the free version still handles the text horribly, although standard 2D seemed OK - I just used the view from the top. I didn't do anything particularly difficult though, so quite possibly haven't reached the point of failure you saw. As @Moonshine says, the new version is web based, they probably realised they could not monetize the software otherwise. Fortunately, older 2017/2018 free versions still work. I doubt they will win the battle for paid customers.
  10. Congratulations! Sleep deprivation may be coming your way. But who knows. Easier while you are young anyway.
  11. @nodyes, CU above a loo is one of the examples I saw mentioned on electricians forum when searching for it.
  12. I've been updating the plans for the downstairs bathroom and utility rooms and realised I am not sure whether it is allowed to put a sink and a consumer unit in the same room. A couple of external links don't say it's not allowed but would be useful to know for sure now to avoid expensive mistakes.
  13. I get it, but does it change anything wrt the accommodation during the build? BC is a different problem, "I will think about it tomorrow" (c) ?
  14. I haven't but I was certainly thinking about over 30m2 which would require BC. At the moment the main question is does it make any sense to build it, I hope I can think of the exact size and layout later.
  15. Thank you, Dave The garden room/gym would be a permitted development AFAIK. But we already have PP for the extension via an appeal hence I am not particularly keen on talking to planners again. The "temporary habitation" wouldn't pass as a non-material amendment (after being built), would it? And as we have kids we can't claim we are all going to be working on the build.
  16. Just went through numerous posts on static caravans and other building that are used as an accommodation during the build. Could not find a matching case though. Most people said we'd need to move out for quite a while during the extension build. We have quite a bit of space in the rear garden so could easily build a large enough structure which would eventually be used as a gym. My question is "is this legal", i.e. do we need the dreaded planning for it. We are not in AONB and I know generally PP would not be required for a gym, but then we can't live there with kids, can we? My understanding is as this is an extension we would continue paying council tax for the main house.
  17. 2 questions if I may 1) Did you have to pay for building control for this building separately (35m2 implies BC is required) 2) From the planning point of view, what is this house? Does it contain permanent of temporary sleeping accommodation? Why did it have to be added to planning application? We have enough space to build something similar in our garden as it looks increasingly obvious that we won't be able to stay in our house while it's been extended. Would probably become a gym eventually - if we ever manage to do any of this of course :-)
  18. Very interesting, thank you. I probably just followed an advice similar to the one you referenced. I used components for repeatable parts, like doors, steps and stairs. I used groups for levels, external / internal walls. In any case as long as all primitives are on the default level the rest is not too bad.
  19. Is there anything specific that you are finding difficult with Sketchup? I did use a few external objects in it but only furniture. The main geometry was mostly OK when I learnt to use layers and groups correctly (I hope I did!) Alternatively I found SweetHome3D great, but had to use Sketchup to create stairs and then import them to SH3D.
  20. Purely practical response: 1. Separate devices give you an option to upgrade or replace when you like. I understand good quality range cooker will last but will you be happy not having the latest bells and whistles features? Or replace the whole appliance if say an oven breaks down? 2. I am happy to be corrected but I believe a modern electric hob is very easy to clean. A range cooker will inevitably have tiny gaps on the sides (unless sealed) and regardless the gas hob is always more hassle to clean. 3. A choice of positions for your ovens: if you do want to put one reasonably high so that you don't need to kneel you can. Not so with a range cooker.
  21. I completely agree there are plenty of experienced reps. The trouble is I already called the bank about a year ago and similarly was originally told "of course it is not a problem". Can't recall now why I eventually spoke to an underwriter or someone who spoke with underwriters and was told "no way", just like Bitpipe did. Hence my reservations. And the chances someone really knowledgeable deals with customer emails on Sunday afternoon aren't that great. ? I guess another potential pitfall is that the house must be habitable. At some point it won't be - hopefully, not for long, but there is no guarantee. Yes, I am a worrier.
  22. Here is my email : Dear Madam/Sir, We have obtained a planning permission to extend our house (link to PP) . Could you please consider the attached plans and provide your consent if possible. We are not planning to start any work until the consent is granted.
  23. Well, since it is a bungalow to a house conversion the whole roof will have to come off at some point. A proper insurance will have to be in place of course. My concern is the customer service rep has no idea what s/he is talking about. I was going to email and ask for confirmation but then realised that would give them a chance to change their mind. Hence the question about "reasonable doubt/ignorance" defence.
  24. Hi, We are in a situation @Bitpipe described in the comment here : I.e. we have planning and a standard residential mortgage that is fixed for another three years. I have emailed the bank today to ask for a consent. Within a couple of hours I've had the following reply : Thank you for getting in touch with us regarding you extending your property. That is absolutely no problem with us, we really appreciate you emailing us before going ahead!Good luck with it all Take care. Now, my question is: is it really "the written consent" I was after? Or at least does it look like something good enough for us to plead ignorance in the future? Thanks in advance.
  25. Thank you. Oddly, this document promises exactly that: "The actual thermal transmission coefficient of the product is provided in quotations and order confirmations..."
