I look forward to reading about how that goes.

Whatever you come up with, point it towards me please. I'm struggling to figure out how to heat my indoors this winter.

Kitchen Hatch - keep and modernise or cover it?
Radian replied to Zak S's topic in Kitchen Units & Worktops
Take out the entire wall to create an open plan kitchen, dining area. 🙊 -
Drought. To fill or not to fill cracks in the lawn?
Radian replied to Radian's topic in Landscaping, Decking & Patios
I've been levelling using sharp sand (because I had some left over) and soil. Is there any particular sand that's recommended? -
That could be an extra 1500kWh P/A (one and a half megawatt hours every year)

Is that a double oven, two single ovens or two double ovens? A single 3kW oven might be consuming 1.5kWh and it depends on the use pattern... a 3 hour continuous baking session would consume less than several sessions throughout the day as initially the energy goes into getting the metalwork up to temperature. This is then lost each time the oven is left to cool. Commercial baking has a considerable electric consumption.

Not rained here since June (and then less than 20mm). So the lawn is shrinking back from paths and patios. This bit is especially disappointing as I spent ages neatly re-turfing up to the new patio shown... So the question is: should I leave it or fill the gaps with sand/soil mix? I'm concerned that the gap will lead to further drying out and eventually affect the strip foundation below the stone perimeter - but then again what would happen if it ever rains again? Would filling it now make it heave when wet?

Time for a bit of 'direct action' perhaps? For self builders that can self install PV for no more than the cost of the equipment, I'd say there's a definite case to be made for adding redundant capacity to extend the generation seasons into winter. What you do with it in the summer, once all the batteries are full, HW max'd out is... just switch it off. If the politicians can't make reasonable or sensible policies that address our energy needs then perhaps those that can should just get on with it.

Amen to that. Why do we never seem to see any media coverage of yet another sickening extortion perpetrated by the energy sector? I would have thought it was quite a juicy story.

Hybrid inverter for small in roof 2kw array - help please!

Yay! Well done. Looks like you'll get a good few sunny days next week - report back. -

Is This the appropriate guide for setting up the initial WiFi connection? -
Is anyone else data logging their fridge?
Radian replied to Radian's topic in Kitchen & Household Appliances
Does happen. Another reason to log it, and I've also put in a pushover notification for when it goes over 8C which it did when we stored our shopping this morning. I'll set 'em up, you knock 'em down. -
I've had a BT temperature sensor in our fridge for a while and forgot about it once the novelty wore off. I also log a power measurement for it and recently noticed it was becoming erratic. Yesterday, when I found my blueberries were frozen solid, I dug out the data for the preceding seven days temperature and got a nasty shock: It was literally 'off the chart' at times. The electromechanical sensor is clearly not regulating the temperature at all well. So yesterday, it dawned on me that I had everything in place to shift the temperature regulation into my own control - namely the battery powered BT sensor for input and the Tasmota MQTT power monitoring relay for switching. All I had to do is dial the fridge thermostat to max cooling (which it seems happy to do). The green trace shows when my new Node Red function flips the fridge on and off (with 0.5C hysteresis, orange trace added for raw temperature data in addition to daily and hourly averages that I had before). So that works. For now. Of course the fridge light may be on or off depending on where in the cycle it is when you open the door, but that wasn't working anyway as I failed to replace the faulty switch a while ago! Seeing as how it was only the power logging that showed the light switch had stuck on back in March, and now that the huge temperature swings didn't quickly tip us off to the problem with the thermostat, I've been wondering if anyone else keeps an eye on their fridge?

@Andehh gave the U value of walls as 0.22 An overlay of 50mm PUR might get that down to 0.155 but at what point do diminishing returns start to kick in?
-
OK, fine. We'll get our solicitors to talk about your will on monday. That'd be super fun. Kid safe though! (what on earth are we letting ourselves in for?)

You seem to have so much stuff in addition to what's shown on the schematic! It really needs documenting fully. Is the Tesla CT hidden in the consumer unit perhaps? The schematic shows it between the CU and the utility meter.
-
Where? I can't see any! I can't tie-up those photos. But doesn't the black/white twisted pair continue up out of the top of the photo?
-
Handy, but your second photo shows a SE grid limiter that's not on the schematic. They've shown the position of the PW CT but not their own. Where is the limiter in relation to everything else?
-
Yes, i'm curious, but was too shy to ask. 😊
-
@pocster do you have the Tesla Backup Gateway in your system? I'm still trying to get my head around the actual hardware you've got there.
-
Not in the absence of an actual schematic of how PW and SE are wired. Sorry.

It also increases the chances of pump-over as the change in pressure when the circulation pump starts and stops gets stored in the "springiness" of the trapped air and bounces back. This is particularly acute if the vent pipe is restricted (either by being too small a diameter, or if crud has lodged in the T-off from the system). I've had systems that would have intermittent pump-over that could be temporarily cured by bleeding. The sludge that was in the tank indicates corrosion so frequent refilling has probably been happening for some time. I'd bleed the system, then close the isolation tap to the F&E cold supply and frequently monitor the level in the tank for a while. I'd also be looking around for leaks from pinholes, poor joints etc. just remembered to add that if it has been pumping over, it makes a lovely lot of steam that condenses out all round the tank and provides perfect mould growth conditions.

Don't give Steamy and Pocster ammo by mentioning the left-hand rule 😕
-
Don't forget to make a note of what you change and what it was before!
-
Yes, and then what? stores it? Can you show the history of charge level in PW and SE for today?
