H&R Show at the NEC - Going..?
Big Neil replied to PeterW's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
I was going to be going on Thursday but don't think I can now. IN case it helps anyone, I found an app called JustPark (accessible via website as well). Basically people sell parking spaces on their drives, in their garages etc. Works out way cheaper in most cases that venue parking. -
i meant straight on the rafters
-
considered them. Want to go straight on the board. Is the EPS idea viable do we think?
-
IN a new house currently where rolls of insulation go both between the rafters and across the top of them. Am going to bard at least part of the loft out. To save from compressing the existing insulation and risk going through the ceiling, can i just whip away the mineral wool stuff that's there and before boarding, throw maybe a 50 mil thick sheet of EPS underneath?will that easily solve the issue of having to cram insulaton down? I don't want to arise the boards unless I can help it

Investigating any increase in Consultants Required for PP
Big Neil replied to Ferdinand's topic in Boffin's Corner
Plus all the rest. righteeeo. It has occurred to me for some time that in respect of the archaeological end of things, many councils would have historical data covering the area, from previous applications and studies, negating the need for new ones. Was this the kind of basis for your interest? If so I'm working on something at the moment (fairly long term) which looks at that particular question for a very small sample area. If you think my figures would be of any general use , i'm happy to share themn once they are finished.- 8 replies

Building the dream : one lesson at a time.

I was thinking of this as an issue. How about this. Anyone ever seen a lightning strap? Basically a perforated strip of metal. HOw about that or something like it which could be used to lay along the line which you are screwing through. Whether the screws are collared into that strap or seperate, you'd never loose the head again. If they were collared you could use it again somewhere else as a temporary strapping device. Booooommmmm (that's the sound of my genius) -
How about putting it inside. The loft maybe?
-
hmm yes maybe.Possibly tint the epoxy. I thought about the walls as well. Where there weren't functional items or shelves, pint glass depth shelves filled with my acquired pint glasses, covered with a poly-carbonate sheet to protect them - maybe some mood lighting for them as well.
-
Ooooooo yes....

Been having a few thoughts about garages recently. Given that it is traditionally seem as the man zone, irrespective of how it might fly now, seems like we can have some design freedom in there. Where SWMBO gets to choose the crap that sits on the shelves and the shade of eggshell that the downstairs water closet gets painted, i thought of the following. Bolts of varying sizes stuck to the concrete much like those penny designs on floors, covered in a clear epoxy. Yes I know it might be a bit costly, but thing purely of the aesthetic aspect. Who would go for that?
-
Correct Me if I'm wrong, but I thought Trespassing in of itself wasn't a criminal offence, it was only if you cause damage while on a property or that trespass involved a violent or destructive act??
-
I Vote Karcher. Never had an issue with them. Would very much suggest the circular patio attachment for large areas. very effective and keeps the spray down
-
It's not something i'd ever looked into in a great deal of depth, but could it be worth doing a deal with a nearby house builder who are throwing up a massive estate. Just ask to speak with the project QS and if they know, like with NOD above you need 120 cube or what have you and can see a way of making that need, act as a bargaining chip for THEIR supply, could pay well for you. I used to carrot and stick a lot in the winter particularly in cumbria/lake district with stone supply for Rail bridge hits, so it might seem odd but it can work if the requirement matches.
-
Not sure what the concrete Mix is, But i've generally used closer to £100 per cube as n indicative cost. I stand to be corrected from anyone elses real world experience of course. Again real world I would frequently have to order a couple of cube a time, and that would push £160 occasionally, but only when very last minute and with additives like Xypex (no idea how it is spealt but I think its a waterproofing agent.)

Bloody love it. Can't say i've paid a great deal of attention to the area itself, but the house. top bloody notch. I really like the stretched out oblongey sort of look. Were it mine i'd probably integrate the Studio into the garage part, but then I don't know what you're going to be using it for or what the actual views are like. really like the idea of the laundry on the top floor. Makes perfect sense. I'd quite like to see some way of having a laundry shoot and then a dumb waiter type arrangement between top floor and basement and have a laundry room there, but then that's a needless extra cost I suppose.
-
Practically speaking it doesn't make much difference to you. It can mean that your service has less potential speed, issues take longer to get resolved (as BT prioritise their direct customers over those of wholesale buyers). Whereabouts are you?
-
Please ammend the post to say you managed to hold on to them and were carried through the air to the next village 8 miles away. That would be an amazing story... (having said which I hope you weren't hurt)

No fossil fuels for heating in newbuilds from 2025?
Big Neil replied to A_L's topic in Environmental Building Politics
Out of general interest. How much as a very rough estimate would it cost to have a grid tied battery of lets say 1MWH? -

IN either case there must be a financial incentive in it for him given his connection with several property companies. Surely THAT is a conflict of interest. -

RANT RANT RANT. By the way to all who read this topic, I plan on phasing out all Mushrooms from my shop bought vegan burgers by next Tuesday. If you want any more information on this endeavour you can get it directly from me at the Feckless Moron Show at the NEC next week. I'll have the booth right next to the Chancellor
