  1. Thanks alot chaps. The Onoff YouTube clip is ideal info (Id never have found such a good eg/ chap seems a boss), using the timber for a straight edge, marking with the tape (ace tip), friction fit I'm going for & if needed fill any gaps after with sudal LE foam.. & I too have a magic pink saw. I just can't face attacking with a circ saw/ dust & noise too much.. & I dont have a tablesaw. Handsaw it is. Ok that's a basic plan of attack. Ideally as PeterW says 2x 70mm would have been wiser now, but £more (& PIR bought before xmas before £hike in january.. saved £80 alone). Great help- zoot. I'll keep reading the replies before I wade in though.
  2. I'm just about to jump in & fit 140mm kingspan into my new timber frame walls. My bco has specified full 140mm (sigh). I've fitted 25mm celotex before in 2x kitchen walls, easily cut with a sharpie.. but this is behemoth thick in comparison so I'm a bit daunted by the prospect of the job. Are there any tips? or is it only a case of measure, saw, stuff it in? I have approx (25x) 2300m H x 500mm W sections/ gaps between my 140mm timber verticals to do. Electric wiring all done, & generally pushed/ clipped at the back or in corners: navigating around cables I could do with a few tips on. Any help much appreciated- zoot.
  3. Likewise here Cpd.. apparantly there's been one major incident in 15 years, someone's mower dissapeared. police came. turned out he'd forgotten he'd just leant it to a mate. No crime too: you get very lazy & leave all sorts of things open all night, but, touch wood.. let me not tempt fate etc.
  4. Well I sympathise with the theft in the OP. My builder mentioned a job he was doing for local authoriy, left 5k worth of kingspan on site under tarps/ out of sight, only 1 night.. whole lot gone by 1st thing next day.
  5. Ah yes just re-read your post before. So maybe I could hardwire the 2x up in extention, & replace 3rd in main room interlinked to these two wirelessly. better get onto the aico Co. many thanks for info MJN.
  6. Well tbh I've only got 1x 9v powered cheapo in my main room. This prompts me to replace it with an aico maybe too.. but quite a distance/ tricky logistics to link it to the extention two mentioned (above each other/ 1 room up-down etc).
  7. @MJNewton hi there. When you say ..aspect to 'them'.. do you mean these specific SA's are designed to interlink, or any similar (even two different makes) are all designed/ can work interlinked together-? thanks- great help!
  8. I've noted aico (thx Peter) & seems likely at ~£17 I'll go with that.. as I'll need 2 of. Its only realy upstairs I was thinking a smaller more conspicuos one would be preferable, but not if alot more£. My electrician was talking of them both working in conjunction.. ie one triggers & sets other off. Anyone know about this type of set up?
  9. Whilst I'm here, the last thing I need are 2x hard-wired ceiling smoke alarms. An opinion on which (if there's a smaller/ least obvious one but decent type- ideal) would be very helpful.
  10. Great thanks. Out of interest, is the compatibility thing/ the leading or trailing edge aspect, (all or partially) to do with making sure they don't buzz?
  11. Hi PeterW.. the LAP one I linked to you mean?
  12. What I know is these lights are 'trailing edge' types. So presumably this (^ above) LAP "leading or trailing edge" dimmer switch is compatible in this aspect. Is there anything else I need to establish tho? ie 'gang' type, or anything else?
  13. Would this dimmer switch be compatible for eg? https://www.screwfix.com/p/lap-1-gang-2-way-led-dimmer-switch-white/273CC?tc=AA4&ds_kid=92700049751403484&ds_rl=1241687&ds_rl=1245250&ds_rl=1249401&ds_rl=1245250&ds_rl=1247848&ds_rl=1248154&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIgNH9lLrR5wIVSbDtCh2xcgRIEAQYAiABEgIis_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds I'm not sure if the compatibility is to do with the 'gangs', &/ or if something else needs to be considered.
  14. I'm having to go with some my electrician say are 'fire-rated' which I hadn't even accounted for (good job he checked before I bought or my part-p chap wouldn't have been able to give me the doc > unable to get the build signed off). I think integrated led types. 'Panels'? I don't know. So I need a dimmer switch as 6x @ 60w just above my head (room 1.95m), will be massively too bright. What I need to establish now, is what type of dimmer switch is compatible with these lights then: https://www.screwfix.com/p/lap-cosmoseco-fixed-fire-rated-led-downlight-contractor-pack-matt-white-500lm-5-5w-220-240v-10-pack/891GX?tc=AA4&ds_kid=92700049750406388&ds_rl=1241687&ds_rl=1245250&ds_rl=1249401&ds_rl=1245250&ds_rl=1247848&ds_rl=1248154&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIx4OEyrfR5wIVxrHtCh3dvQrzEAQYASABEgIJ8PD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds Can anyone help?
  15. Many thanks chaps- job done/ looks fabulous too: hours to get out, a breeze to fit tho. Very minimal dmg to beads- great. zoot
  16. Hi there Peter. I'm just getting going on the electrics job, so going over the thread. I will go with your suggestion here of LED battens in workshop after all. The ones you linked to are very bright @ 4800 l.. which is so I think (its complicated) equivalent to about 400w-500w in old school bulbs. This will be excessively bright, say 2x, with my low 2m room. Can they be put on a dimmer? I like your suggested https://www.bltdirect.com/v-tac-led-batten-40w-warm-white-3000k-4800lm-with-samsung-chip because they're only ones I see in warm white/ what I want (I hate the cold daylight 4000k+ anywhere, especially in bedroom above/ a total no-no).. but they're WAY too bright. Screwfix battens have no mention of colour temp, so I cannot go for these.. altho much better for brightness (far lower @ approx 400 l). Its very complicated understanding all the new types! Led 'panels' (for ceiling round downlights) I can't see in screwfix, & via the link you put are only available in cold daylight, not simply 'warm white' (bewildering). thanks for any help- Im floundering yet again here.
  17. Well this is what I was thinking. Yes its celotex I think, about 12 eight x four sheets stacked neatly in a pile. I'm gonna have to cut 8'x4' up anyway into 3 maybe 4 long strips (to insulate timber frame walls, studs ~400mm centres). If I could establish for definite only the edges might be n/g, & buy this lot off the hick.. I might well be able to save £500 who knows.
  18. Ah thanks @Stewpot hadn't thought of its crumblyness. That might mean terrible cutting numnums.
  19. Reason I ask, is I drive past a stack of ~70mm PIR sheets left outside/ abandoned probably 6 yrs min at a guess. could it be used I wonder even trimming the obviously weathered edges off? obviously I can't just nab it & find out (I guess weight would simply tell you if water trapped within).. it is on s'one's property. I can't think its made like a sponge, if its got to contain heat/ Id have though it be 1000's of tiny bubbles.. ie sealed. My builder's used some scrappy offcuts on my knock-through door (old stone cottage/ alot of pesky bits to fill) prety sure these been outside in elements. Any ideas? cheers zoot.
  20. @Oz07 what's the tape for? is it like the stuff I find around the perimeter/ edges of my shot DG?
  21. I have read all your posts, all aspects of them- appreciated etc. My ceiling is so low though, that it might mean these led batten things are firing at me as much as the worktops. So, it might mean choosing not neccessarily the -best- light, but one that's best for my situaion (flush in ceiling does seem to me better with this in mind, maybe).
  22. Got a quote for £33 inc vat. terrific- & local/ ready tues too. 1st time ever Ive found local £ beats online £. Thanks chaps- fab help on this (a job I had put off for 3.5 yrs!).
  23. So the problem with these ceiling downlights, is that now theyre led they tend not to have the spread/ 'wide angle' as old halogen gu10. Is this what's being said as the basic 'issue' with these?
  24. Ok thanks for the suggestion: what would be the benefit of 2 of these, over say 3 ceiling small round downlights tho? as the ceiling's so low (just 5" above my head) I don't want anything firing at me.. or anything bright, if I put strip things in corners this might be the case. Plus dust: it'll be extremely dusty in here so brushing/ cleaning lights constantly- easier if ceiling downlights to just brush across once.
  25. Local quote is near £60 inc vat: only one other place here/ waiting. Does anyone buy new DG units online.. or would the advise be no due to carriage issues?
