Can I get a grant for loft conversion insulation?
newhome replied to john k's topic in Lofts, Dormers & Loft Conversions
A few years ago, I’m going to say 7 or 8, the government handed out targets for things like loft insulation. The main energy companies provided it and it was meant to be for existing lofts with not enough insulation but there were no real checks, you just said you had none and they delivered it for a small delivery fee. Thus they met their target. Cue an abundance of insulation on eBay and gumtree. The rules are much tighter now. -
Fitting a Key Safe - Best Place

@lizzie has a good idea. A key safe that’s very difficult to locate and when they break into it, it’s empty ? -

So presumably it’s not attached to the house? Thinking where else I could put one ... ? -
Fitting a Key Safe - Best Place
newhome replied to Ferdinand's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
I will put it round the back as I want it to open the back door. Haven’t decided where yet. 6 digits would be better and I will look for one where the order of the numbers is important. -
Thanks. I’m not too bothered about the cost but want something that will work and won’t feck it up ...

Fitting a Key Safe - Best Place
newhome replied to Ferdinand's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Sorry to bump up an old thread but I found this as I am considering fitting a key safe. I rang my insurance company (Halifax) and they confirmed that I would still be covered if someone broke into the key safe as it counts as forceable entry. She said they were popular if you have a carer or a cleaner for example. If someone accesses the safe without forcing it then I imagine you won’t be covered so be careful who you give the code to. I asked if I needed a specific type and she said ‘the safer the better’ but there is no standard it needs to comply with. She has also put a note on my policy that I have contacted them to inform them that I will have a key safe so my advice is to always tell your insurance company as they don’t all have the same requirements. -
I’ve ordered some 3 in 1 oil from Amazon. I have WD40 here but don’t think I’ve got the oil. Will give that a whirl when it comes, thanks.

Help with kitchen renovation/ 1st house.
newhome replied to zoothorn's topic in Bathrooms, Ensuites & Wetrooms
Nor me. I just shove an extension lead through the window or door. Do you have a replacement sink yet? I would get all of the materials ready to complete the job so that you don’t have any down time waiting for bits. You’ll need to order those extension boxes online .... -
No it’s stiff when the door is open too. The bolts that engage when I pull the handle up don’t seem particularly stiff. Scared myself at 11pm last night when I was fiddling with it and couldn’t get it unlocked after I had locked it with the door open. Note to self, don’t mess about with stuff late at night! They are uPVC. And it’s not hot today. Back to normal Scottish summer ?

One of the locks on my French doors is becoming very stiff to unlock. Had a look online and various links say squirt with WD40, never use WD40, use 3 in 1 oil, use graphite powder, remove the barrel and clean etc. So now I’m confused about what to do. Any tips please as the lock on the back door is the same type and the one I rely on to get in the house and that’s getting a little stiff now too.

@Nickfromwales I am wondering why you think that drone = perv? Sounds like you've had some traumatic past experience @vivienz there are people who have drones who will take video footage / photos. Not sure how much they'd charge but I bet you'd find someone on a local FB group or similar who would do it.

Depends whether the guy was doing it cash in hand as an ‘extra’ I guess. Even so it’s not a high day rate for the SE.

Regardless of the quality of work because I’m no expert so cannot comment on that, if you have lost confidence in the guy and aren’t happy with his work then I would say that you were right to part company with him. Dealing with builders once relations have soured is a thankless task. It’s stressful, difficult and can lead to further issues so see this as a positive and as @jack says time to look forward with the new guy. Chalk it up to experience and learn from it. Also don’t hand over more money than you can afford to write off at any stage. Relatively it’s not a large sum so although annoying it’s possibly not worth trying too hard to recover the sum you are talking about.

I think possibly the longest post he’s ever made was the one to test my rogue heating system ?. It was all good though as every test proved that my system was indeed mince! He should have written up the resolution as that would indeed have been a post worthy of awards.

Assumption is the mother of all,
newhome replied to Russell griffiths's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Oooh! Go on, please do a little blog. Your site is stunning and I’m sure we’d all love to see how you’re getting on. A monthly entry would only need a few photos and a couple of sentences. Hubby started a blog when we started the project. I ended up writing all the content ?. The things I wish I’d done differently were take more photos and write more content as it’s good to look back to remind myself how various things were built etc but there are gaps that I wish I had the details of as I can’t remember / never knew. Those would be helpful to me now I’m in ‘fixing’ mode. -
Thank feck I don’t have to earn a living this way. I’d be bankrupt in a week! ?
-
Thanks. I’ve done it. Thank feck for that! But did the top first and improvised with getting the springs pushed up afterwards. It wouldn’t let me hook the top on without pulling the backplate away from the wall so that it could slide behind. As @Onoff says screwdrivers have a multitude of uses. Used 3 different ones here and none of them touched a screw. Only 5 more cisterns to go

So I have fallen at the final hurdle. I have managed to replace the flush valve, inlet valve and the inlet hose, fix a small leak, put the first 2 plates back on and adjust the rods to what I think will be the right length to flush effectively. But I just cannot get the final plate back on. I think I need to clip the bottom on first but I can’t get the top in properly (I have assumed that it clips behind the plate it covers?). That plate is pretty firmly fixed so how do I get the top bit clipped in? Do I need a tool to prise behind it? I’ve tried a ‘flatty’ screwdriver but as soon as I try the bottom clips off. I’ve spent a good hour and half trying to clip it on so wondered if anyone could give me some tips please before I smash it with a hammer. @Onoff my ZooT moment ?

Does it count as 3 storey if it's on 3 levels like @Hecateh's house is? Guess not. Maybe that's what he was confused about?
