  1. Where does the exhaust air from the tumbler go, direct outside via a hole or into the internal airspace of the garage?
  2. I know what you mean. On the 27th when that storm struck the UK I was up on my tarpaulin covered roof in the dark being buffeted by gale force gusts and my thought, "the last time I had such an adrenaline rush was solo sailing to France when my boom disconnected from the mast at 1am".
  3. Do you have the type of soffit vents that create an air channel between the soffit and up above the insulation roll level?
  4. That white monster looks like a next generation robot from Boston Dynamics, are you sure is has not escaped from an AI research lab. Just hang on if it decides to execute a back flip while you are fixing the roof.
  5. Our standard of living onsite improved incrementally. A garden shed for the washing machine and tumbler was a big step forward. Hardcore parking for cars. Then a rotary washing line in the Spring. Finally we developed a garden area with potted plants and garden furniture, after dark on a summer's evening we forgot we were living on a building site. Last week I got the fridge freezer out of storage and set it up under the temporary roof of the utility room.
  6. Have you considered sourcing direct from a quarry in 10 ton loads? Suppose it depends on storage space onsite since manually shifting that much in a weekend would be a backbreaking task.
  7. My early-stage seasonally adjusted self builder tips in descending priority are: Hook-1: So that you always know where your ear defenders are. Hook-2: For a proper builders face mask. A good torch powered by the same rechargeable battery system chosen for your power tools. A few tons of hardcore for site paths to get you out of the mud.
  8. Now we know where English Barnett formula money goes. ?
  9. Yes a slow round the world cruise on Cunard's Queen Mary, should be dry enough to seal on your return. When did you move in?
  10. Essential that payments are tied to completed stages as shown in your revised payment schedule. One BuildHubber got caught out paying the builder a monthly appearance fee. I would just caution about your relative percentages for the stages, in general for a whole house build a water tight shell is just a little over the halfway point whereas with your budget you have paid out 70% at this point.
  11. Ok that is a very different situation. So you want to know what insulation type has slumped to the bottom of the cavity that you suspect is wet due to other symptoms.
  12. When getting a cavity wall insulation quote for my 2001 built house the assessor drilled a 10mm hole in the mortar bed at the corner of a brick. By looking for debris on the drill bit as it was removed he checked what was in the cavity. The cavity was empty as I thought. Why not top up the current wall insulation with an extra internal layer of PIR lined plasterboard?
  13. Condensation? Have you been plastering? Is the heating on this winter?
  14. What surprised me was the how jubilant the PM was repeating over and over how little would change and how reluctant the UK Government will be to diverge from what we have today.
  15. Let's examine that claim! First it was called "new variant" CJD to distinguish it from the previously documented version of the disease CJD. CJD affected the elderly as a form of slow progressive loss of brain function, vCJD attacked the brains of young people rapidly hence the scientific interest in the new aggressive protein type in the brain. The first British death was aged 19 in 1995. The Prion was first named in 1982 when a researcher decided he was looking at something new. It was more than a regular protein but could not be classified within previous defined groups of lifeform i.e. it was not animal, vegetable, bacterial or a virus. There was ramp up of scientific research into the prion in the early 90's but the first accepted model of how these nasty proteins could self replicate was not published until 1996. At this point in 1996 the scientific community decided a new type of life form had been discovered. What did I say: The UK slaughtered 4 million cattle after 10,000 BSE cases. Evidently the Government was worried. = TRUE In 1982 the prion was named for a newly discovered category of protein that seemed to sit on the boundary of biochemistry and lifeform. In 1996 after 14 years of continued research science decided the Prion could be named as a new lifeform = TRUE I was working in Paris in 1996 when I was able to ask what a Prion was. His lay explanation to me was valid in 1996 and is valid today. = TRUE Why would you choose to dispute my post and make yourself look so daft as a consequence?
  16. This would work in my village regardless of the merit of the planning application. There are so many schisms and cliques in the village some would support an application if members of another clique had made a critical submission.
  17. They were genuinely worried at the time. Science had to define a new category of life form for the BSE pathogen namely The Prion. I was working in Paris at the time and living in a type of professional's commune, which gave me the opportunity to ask a Danish research scientist across the dinner table what a Prion was. He grimaced as he formulated a lay answer, "think of it as a self replicating protein never seen by science before".
  18. Having just watched a long review of the Makita 700w trim router that looks like an unbranded clone off the same production line.
  19. Nations always squabble, previously EU membership kept a lid on it.
  20. Let's agree to look on the bright side. If this situation (mutant virulent new strain plus the blockade) does spiral out of control, then the Little Englander Boomers who were the core of the brexit vote will be standing shivering outside Tesco in mid January with their ration card to pick up their weekly allowance of 6 eggs and 2 rashers of bacon.
  21. Oh I see. Not much you can do about organized local resistance. How about informing the council that this has happened and asking if you can respond in the form of your own comment. In the case I am familiar with, the site plan labelled an upmarket man-cave as a "workshop". This provoked local objections about possible commercial engineering activity at a residential new build.
  22. Edit: I misread the original post and thought the council contacted neighbours to promote an objection. In my part of the world Planning directly notify the nearest neighbours at the start of the planning review process. They also allow limited interactive dialogue via the comments, in one case they allowed the applicant to make a public interim response as a neighbour comment mid way through the public consultation period. Sounds like a procedural error by a junior planner in your case, they are working from home at the moment so less close supervision I guess. I would demand that the council issue a follow up letter explaining their previous letter should not be taken as their endorsement of the validity of the objection.
  23. Because if we were a full EU member then France could not initiate independent restrictions against free trade with us. If we were a full EU member and the EU genuinely believed we were a plague ridden nation that needed to be isolated for a few months any action against us would be following EU consensus.
  24. It was a crazy journey done on a whim with little prep. I finished a contract, bought a 3 wheel recumbent trike and peddled off the St Malo ferry 2 weeks later in early September. I kept just ahead of the campsite season close down as I headed south and boarded the Bilbao ferry a month later. Swmbo and I returned to one leg of that journey a few years ago. Arcachon is a distinctive part of West Coast France overlooked by most British tourists. There are better parts, La Rochelle is a favourite. To get a flavour of that part of France I'd recommend the video travel blog published by Yacht Ruby Rose on YouTube. Hip middle aged London dentist and his Aussie girlfriend reveal some choice bits of France as they traverse the Canal Du Midi from the Med to Biscay in 2019. This year they covered my stretch from La Rochelle to SW Brittany, you can fast forward through the boaty bits. http://yachtrubyrose.com/category/videos/sailing-and-travel-videos-blogs/france/
