  1. Tides where set from Newlyn, that is where we get heights from (until GPS came along). Where is the main datum for the UK? Earth moves quite often down here when a mine collapses, or the geothermal boys in St. Day and Penzance are fracking. Also, twice a day, the coast moves quite a bit, and that is before the cliffs collapse.
  2. Yes, but when it is 6 metres tall, with two platforms, on rough ground and a 35 MPH wind, trust me, it wobbles a fair bit.
  3. Depends how it is pronounced. In this case, it is, in effect, milled out, or spindle molded. Routers are a useful tool.
  4. Yes, but it does take a good hour to move a scaffold tower 8 inches along the wall. 10 minute job with two people. But you do get to do all the cooking, cleaning, washing, driving, shopping, etc on your own. And when you go away, you pay extra, so demand double the meals.
  5. Set up a time-lapse camera quick.
  6. How many of us, who live alone, feel the need for dishwasher, or other kitchen clutter, for that matter?
  7. Thanks. Looks similar to what my parents house had back in the early 1980s. They worked well.
  8. Can you get the front of the consumer unit off without removing the cupboard?
  9. Any chance of a picture of them. I want external sound, wind, rain and light proofing blinds as my house faces the SW, so gets all the Atlantic weather. And I have a neighbour that sometimes goes to work at 3AM.
  10. Not such a stupid idea, in a way. You could you that large tin roof to heat an evaporative cooler. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evaporative_cooler
  11. Welcome. With that much glasing I think you are going to need air conditioning. Have you had all the thermal calculations done yet?
  12. WTF did you use to take that picture with, your doorbell.
  13. Isn't it more financial sustainability as far as councils are concerned. Oh I wish they would bring the community charge back in, would make life so much easier.
  14. Welcome I have a cousin that lives in Wallingford, never been to visit him at home though. So when you say you want to design to PassivHaus principles, which ones are you after? The whole thing except the certification, or more of a A la carte approach?
  15. Not that much larger, on average. Just under 8 m at Weston-Super-Mare today. They work because they are very large. The proposed Severn Estuary barrage would make a lagoon 500 km2, this would give a power range between 8W/m2 (neap tide) and 30W/m2 (spring tide). Cheaper and more effective to put PV and battery storage somewhere.
  16. And objections from government and end users who want cost to be low. On a slightly off topic, but connected. Who sees the irony in this banner on the Humphrey Davy memorial in Penzance. @JSHarris, you are not allowed to answer. Which may give others a clue.
  17. As always, it is not as simple as that. One of the biggest problems is conservationists, they will stop almost all development because some bird or welk may vanish from an estuary.
  18. Not tidal, but there was a land based wave generator based on Islay. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islay_LIMPET It was the turbine design I liked, simple and worked on both the in and out 'strokes'. There was also a simple design that used a hydrofoil. As the tide went past, it lifted up or down, this was connect hydraulically to s generator on the land. You could take a look at the WaveHub down here at Hayle. They have not generated anything get, except a financial hole.
  19. But what shade of white?
  20. I worked at a model and pattern makers once (well twice). Model makers would work to 5 thousands of an inch, pattern makers to the nearest quarter of an inch. Cabinet makers never did any work, they just sharpened their own chisels all day, and moaned.
  21. Our old mate Joiner used to have a metre rule on the wall, he told everyone to check their own rules and tape against it. "I have 12 inches, but don't use it as a rule"
  22. Erwin Schrödinger's Switch, it is both On and Off. Or should that be @Onoff's Bathroom. It is both finished and unfinished.
  23. Um. https://drivetribe.com/p/germans-make-mistake-fZl0jxc0RKOLdx1lTTvl0Q?iid=B4R_m5lVQ1-Nf8GCJBd4cg
  24. He would have been allowed to keep it if he had changed the design. Trouble was it was a battle of personalities, more than the planning rules.
  25. You could start with putting a small cheap tent on it, then a larger one. See what happens. Keep adding things like caravans and sheds over time. Eventually, no one will take any notice. Then sneak your well camouflaged home in.
