What's your biggest DIY calamity?
SteamyTea replied to Mulberry View's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
My Father was accident prone. Put a fork though his foot. Did not matter as he then chopped off toes with his Flymo. He slipped on a ladder, but decided to slide down it like a stuntman. Forgot to bend his legs though. Needed a couple of new knees. He had a hedge trimming attachment for his old B&D drill, the drill was so old that the switch was stuck on permanently. He picked the hedge trimmer up by the blade, then switched it on. But I do like this video. -
Scaffolding tent for temporary roofing

I am taking a guess that it is not an environmental resin, these tend to have a wax additive in them. It feels slippery when cured, so you would know. Bit of sanding sorts it out anyway. -

I thought it was normal to drill into a cable. I consider that a minor mishap, even after the 3rd or 4th time. I did overflow my bath, leaked into the kitchen below. Drained some water out, had my bath. As I got out, I felt a tingle in my foot. Wet wiring and a cast iron bath. Got called Thatcher for weeks after that. -

I use the MET off Android App. Bloody rubbish, like the weather. -
Don't understand the question. Or how it relates to lime compared to OPC.

Did not happen to me, but I know someone that was fitting a log sauna, his mate was hammering down a log, with his mates tackle caught between two pieces. 'Black Man's Pinch' did not start to describe it apparently. -
Not sure how different lime and Portland cement are chemically, that is one for @Jeremy Harris, but as concrete is used for foundations, I can't see that it is a problem (under current legislation). Not a lot we, as individuals, can do about large organisations breaking, or bending the laws and rules (short of direct action sabotage).

I just had a quick look at a small domestic wind turbine. This little 1 kW jobby needs a rotor diameter of 1.8m and a wind speed of 12.5 m.s-1 (28 MPH) https://futurenergy.co.uk/domestic-wind-turbines/airforce1/ I would be dubious that they can deliver more than a few watts about.

Heard on You & Yours some marketing person talking about 'emotional mechanics' today. That should cover any effect nicely.

Are these those fans that use the heat from the stove to turn s small fan? I have often wondered how much energy can be moved with them. Quick Google and you can get them from Aldi for less.

From what I have read and heard, there is never a good time to use lime. It is either too cold, too hot, too dry, to wet, too sunny, too dark, too windy, too calm. I wonder why people bother with it.

I have seen it used on a loft conversion where it was screwed. Could see nearly every screw because the plaster skim had popped out.

Maybe because it is, in effect, an upfront council tax payment. Different councils charge different amounts. We do get to vote our local councils in and out.

Welcome. Almost in the horror that is Cornwall then. You can smell the special smell of Tavistock though.

Depends how bad the OCD is, really bad cases you get a grant to employ them.

This is often touted by lighting designer for a reason to have more lights. The thing is, less light worked just as well. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawthorne_effect

I had my cataracts changed, sorted that problem, can put a 3 watt build in a room and see fine. I do use a cheap standard lamp for reading in bed, still got a 3 W bulb in it.
