  1. And a real time clock to be on the safe side. Could use the hotspot on a phone, even if there is no 3/4G signal. Not sure if that uses the phone clock when no signal. One advantage of using wireless is that it is pretty simple to set up a Raspberry Pi, or similar Linux box, to get the data onto a PC.
  2. I always bought mine from these people. https://homechip.com/collections/ibuttons-1/products/ds1920-f5-temperature-ibutton You do need to get a reader for them.
  3. This is a similar to the problem of using heating and cooling degree days, if the base temperature is not set the same i.e. 15.5°C, then individual results become meaningless. This is the problem we had over at the other place when we started to collect usage and house size data. Too many people thought they would make their houses look better by changing the base temperature.
  4. If you don't want to make your own (not hard or expensive, and can be very flexiable). Then consider iButtons and a reader. https://uk.farnell.com/c/semiconductors-ics/memory/ibuttons-accessories/ibuttons
  5. Ah right, it is your 'must' not the M&Es, or anyone else's 'must'. Misunderstood.
  6. No, but Wikipedia will. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surface-area-to-volume_ratio
  7. So you can never see the problem before it is too late.
  8. Why 'must' and not may or can?
  9. Must have been in a book of his I had not read. I liked 'A Step further out'. Think I still have my copy from the 1981. I never realised he had died, but he was well into his 80's.
  10. Yes, not sure why I put the year in, probably still had 8760 in my head. W.m-2 is the mean power the house is emitting, regardless of anything else.
  11. If we reduced our houses to cubes, for calculation purposes, then divided the annual energy usage by that area, and then, divided by hours in year, we would get a number. The lower the number, the better. Mine is 3.5 [W.m-2.year-1]
  12. And this penalises small houses that use less energy overall.
  13. Be fun to calculate the energy usage for the sum of all built areas.
  14. GSHP's are really water source heat pumps, so putting an impermeable barrier, like concrete over them is not the best idea. Sand above them s good though.
  15. Yes. Seems strange that the existing floor\base\foundation can't be modified. Almost as if they want these old barns to fall or burn down.
  16. You can get ply and plaster board covered in aerogel. Thin and a bit better. Why can't you dig down deeper to fit more insulation just under the pipes, and some insulation around the external edges.
  17. Are you going for UFH and can you add extra insulation there. Get a tripple win that way. I would go for the bigger ASHP. They are not quite like cars where you take an everyday hit for the few holiday trips or towing holiday. What modulation is all about.
  18. Yes, mainly down to the wind loading and possibly snow loading. Would look silly as well. And would do nothing for the reduced hours of daylight. Or the azimuth angles.
  19. Going bake a bit, you could paint a normal GRP meter box with coloured flow coat.
  20. No, as they are still fitted on the property. Odd though as telephone billing is not done the same way.
  21. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Learning_styles While doing my PGCE we had to try out all styles, but generally, we teach bet they way we learn. Why some people just cannot learn from some teachers. I wish English teacher could learn that.
  22. Had a conversation with the meter reading man about this. Much higher chance of it happening in deprived areas, especially with short term renters. He had a list of meters that he was not allowed to touch as the wiring had been tampered with in the past. Strange, how one house out of the 6 where I am had a meter open to the elements, it is now 2 properties, number 4 moved to number 5.
  23. Was 30 years ago when I had to know about this sort of stuff. They don't stop electrical fires.
  24. Time is cheap, you do save on the professional fees. I like the idea of building my own place, but the VAT saving is just not enough of an incentive. You can save that by shopping about. Living in dust for months us not fun though. Get a good tent, or build a decent shed to live in.
  25. I always fall asleep after a nutritious snack too.
