Green roof from recycled materials
SteamyTea replied to BotusBuild's topic in Environmental Materials & Construction Methods
Start with the plants, then work out what they need to grow. Then realise that it is hard work for a patch of scrubland. -
Not very good for PV generation. Also, if you have larger windows that side of the house, the heat losses will be greater. My house, though terraced, is NE-SW, the rear (NE) is always cooler. As for the theory behind energy, that is really simple. You have energy, which is the amount of fuel in the tank, and power, how fast you use that tank full. The unit of energy is the joule (J), and 3,600,000 J is a kWh (what you pay for, or store). Power is the watt, (W) and is a J/s (J.s-1). As it is a watt is a small unit, we tend to use the kilowatt, 1000 watts (kW). Temperature should really be the kelvin (K) scale, but we tend to use celsius (°C). There are times when it does matter when doing the sums. Temperature is not energy. I shall repeat that, temperature is not energy. Mass is the kilogram (kg). Distance is the metre (m). Time is the second (s). Energy goes from a higher state to a lower state, unless mechanically moved. So flows naturally from hot to cold. There is no magic in thermodynamics, it is all well understood. You may notice that I have spelt watt and joule with lower case first letters, this is to stop confusion with the people they are named after, Watt and Joule. The unit initial though is a capital. Just to make it worse, prefixes are generally lower case, until they get large, so k for kilo (1000) but M for mega (1000000). Some people think it is a bit pedantic and anal fussing about units, but it saves confusion. Just reread your post. You may require planning permission for a PV system that is ground mounted (>9m2 from memory). Wood burning stoves are a huge particulate pollution source. Best to avoid them.

Generally, if you can stop the flow from the tap with your thumb, it is gravity fed. The main thing is that the pressure is equal in both the hot and cold, otherwise the one with the higher pressure will force its way up the pipe with the lower pressure. I have a gravity fed system, but have fitted a twin impeller shower pump to improve the flow. I tried a larger shower head once, but it just allowed more water to flow out but at a slower speed. Was not as good as the smaller shower head which feels like it has more force.

Hello, hoping to find a place to off grid

They have designated areas where you can build small (<50m2) homes. But sure there are some rules. Someone on here has built one. -
They are just shower heads, a pipe and a wall bracket. There way be a flow restrictor in there somewhere. When you say Is that a gravity fed system i.e. both hot and cold are supplied from the same feed and expansion tank in the loft?

Potential Self Builders in Lincolnshire
SteamyTea replied to TyroBuilders's topic in Introduce Yourself
Like everything in science, especially the ecosystem, it all depends. If you have a lot of space, then maybe not a problem. If tight on space, it may well be game over. There is often talk about changing the rules about GCN in the UK as they are not rare here, but I doubt it will happen. Got bat tunnels to build first, and before that, the trees have to be checked. I spent too long at university with ecologists to take their arguments seriously. -
Not really the optimal time of year to do a GRP roof. You may be struggling with this.

Walk away, or bleach. Have you though of buying an existing property and refurbishing it, probably lower ecological damage. -
It's a job ain't it.

As you have an 8 kW wood burner, that needs to be run at full chat to reduce emissions (though they are still ridiculously high), and timber has about 4.5 kWh.kg-1 energy content, do you really want to be supplying it with 3 kg.h-1 of wood (once efficiency is taken into account). Remember that temperature is not energy.

Try methylated spirit. Might not get the adhesive off, but you can drink it like a Montpellier bum.

I don't think that is correct. Shape and heat capacity are what actually does the absorption. The shape allows for wave cancellation and the heat capacity is where the temperature rises because it has absorbed energy.

Yes, High Wycombe was back then, but was on my way to Marlow.

Heating Soaking Tub - Hot Water Tank or Inline heater?
SteamyTea replied to mike2016's topic in Boilers & Hot Water Tanks
That is a (expletive deleted)ing brilliant idea. -
We have automatic flushers on the men's urinals at work. if a bog is left too long, the U-Bend dries out and they start to smell, so may be worth looking to see if there is a ready made solution (pun intended).

Going back to my ignorance of organics, does the amount of water in the tank make a difference? My thinking is that if it dries out too much, the sludge gets thicker and probably more sticky. Harder to blow bubbles though as well. Would some sort of extra water dosing be helpful? Should be easy enough to make.

Do we need to worry about too much solar gain for saps calculations?
SteamyTea replied to K44's topic in Building Regulations
Smaller windows would have been cheaper. -
If you have PV fitted, your running costs, when away, will be lower as little else will be using the power. Off to drink a pint of aqua vita. (His work cured my stomach ulcer, he is a personal hero to me, 40+ years of thinking that eating and drinking was normally painful, 2 weeks treatment and all gone)

Our family business was a Vauxhall franchise. I had a Chevette, was a nice handling car in its day. Stuffed it up the back of a BMW in High Wycombe.
