  1. Is the word 'board' being used loosely here?. 100mm (4inch) is not a great deal of insulation, even in mild Cornwall. If the property is exposed to the wind, airtightness becomes important.

  5. Well the one that is currently running does. I would be more concerned, if I was of such a mind, about the radio waves affecting my brain, and therefore thoughts. ASHPs do have water in them after all, and we all know that water vibrates, just like radio waves, and our brains contain mostly water.

  13. Do you know the minimum charge rate your cars will take from that charger. I think they are 10A chargers, but they may start charging at a lower rate. You don't want to wait until your PV is producing 10A before the cars start to charge, though that would be the cheapest method i.e. no imports at all.
  14. There may be a minimum power requirement to start charging them, so they may have to be topped up from the grid at the same time. That time slot may be expensive.
  15. Assuming no shading, I would just run the angles though PVGIS and initially see which gives the best energy yield. So something like this: 00 250 500 750 900 Then decide when I need the energy most i.e. 750 gives best yield in winter. Then I would look at the hourly data for that month i.e. December. Initially the mean, min and max by hour of day. Chart title is wrong, it is just showing December data. Then the percentage frequency that those powers (W) actually happen. Then decide if I can find a use for those power levels. (I based this on Stroud and a 1 kWp grid tied system for simplicity)
  16. Yes, after a couple of years detailed analysis. when I first started logging energy use (about 13 years ago), I used a desktop PC that was drawing 100W, 24/7. Also found out that my DHW was heating up, cooling down, heating up again, cooling down, and quite often heating up again. So limited thee time that the heating starts in relationship to the time I use it. Going to fine tune that a bit more this year as I think I can probably save another kWh.day-1. Also, being away a lot this winter, I have found the best setting for my storage heaters, then put a 50p piece on them to easily adjust the input side. That is a job that is crying out to be automated. Everything else is now such low energy, except the washing machine, that it is not worth worrying about i.e. I don't care if I leave a 3 W LED on, or my 8 W laptop download from bittorrent all night. You never driven a 1 series, that would put you off the brand for life.
  17. Well only to the heavy loads, i.e. water heating, car charging, oven and hob useage. It is very useful. How I get such a low usage and lots of time without any usage. Times without any usage are, in your case, charging times.
  18. That will probably only give you a general overview. It would be nice to know that if you have a load of say 300W, and your PV/Battery combo has 500W generation, and your water needs 1 kWh (see, I have changed units, for a reason), would you know how your system is performing?
  19. How, and what, are you going to monitor all this? It is OK fitting all this extra kit, but it has to power things internally, so you need to know the Who, What, Where and When.
  20. Don't get power (kW) and energy (kWh) mixed up with changing module angles. Energy yield was good when you got paid for generation and a deemed export, but now power may be more useful, even if only for a limited time during the winter.

  22. They need to know the total peak capacity. So yes, you need to notify them as far as I know. Not sure what happens if you go from sat 1 kW to 3 kW, but suspect you do need to. The DNO is responsible for line voltage, if too much distributed capacity is installed, the voltage can exceed the agreed amounts and disconnect all connect systems. Between 216.2 volts and 253 volts, which is 230 V -10% + 6%. That defeated the object of having distributed generation.
  23. Not really, it can be covered by the 'competent person' clause. It is probably best if they are accredited with Part P. There is a limited scope one that covers PV (well there was when I did it). AND you do need to notify your DNO that you have installed it.
