  1. Anyone remember the 1980s fad for stone effect cladding. Hardly see it now, that was meant to enhance the value. Regarding the 'moisture' problem. All houses have the same issues, just the better insulated and airtight they are, the more sophisticated the control of it has to be. 'Hydrogen Ready' reminds me of Windows 95 Ready. An OS that lasted 3 years before something better came along.
  2. I have a vague recollection that non 13A loads i.e. anything hard wired, has to disconnect i.e trip or blow a fuse, within 5 seconds. This swapping over from grid to local storage may be a legacy of those rules. We tend to think that microprocessors, running in the gigahertz speed range is all that is needed. Probably find that power electronics cannot run at those frequencies reliably and sensibly. I may just be talking bollocks, but if it was simple, it would have been done.
  3. That all depends on the amount of stored energy, plus the power and time the ASHP is running, and the power the house needs to keep itself at the desired temperature. Though it isn't coming to work too well with a small Ecocent.
  4. Welcome. As a rule, before you start to think about replacement heating and water system, of any kind, you really need to establish what your requirements are. If you are living in the house, this is pretty easy to establish. Monitor you usage, either by manual meter readings or getting a data logger (not that hard to make one for electricity, but harder for gas). Then draw up your house and calculate wat difference any changes should make i.e. change a wall from U-value 0.8 down to 0.5. If the roof is good, and at suitable angles, get a basic PV system up there, this will always be useful.
  5. Yes. I think, since 2012/13 they have clarified. Did it specify the temperature resolution i.e. 0.1⁰C. Again, in reality not that important.
  6. Is that 99.7‰ (or whatever) temperature distribution or time? I thought, from years ago when I was involved with MCS, that it was time. 8734 hours out of 8760 hours in a standard year. Not sure how much real difference it makes knocking off the third standard deviation on the cold tail of the OAT distribution in reality. Probably none, but it does depend on the variance (spread) kurtosis (tailedness) of the distribution, and skew (lopsidedness).
  7. Here is a register that showed a few. https://www.istructe.org/find-an-engineer/members-directory/ I just set the location to Cardiff
  8. Is this the sort of work that can be done under a building notice?
  9. Even easier would be a standard control system. Similar to car pedals. It is really for the manufacturers to make a common standard, and stick to it.
  10. How much room do you have to play with? Mineral wool, blown cellulose or even poured polystyrene beads would all work well.
  11. Here is some time series data from my E7 heated cylinder.
  12. TL;DR Architects will do anything for payment. Well I say anything, maybe less than you expect, then hide behind their professional organisation terms of contract. But look on the bright side, they will still charge you the same for half the job, so you know were you stand.
  13. Have a look around the base of the cylinder and see if it has a boss blanked off. You could try setting the thermostat to the maximum it will reliably go to i.e. 85°C. Tat will at least allow more cold to be mixed with it at the tap. You can also time your usage to allow a decent recharge time that coincided with PV production, i.e. use before 10AM, usage after 2PM. Use less.
  14. Why would anyone pay for a tree. Just dig up one the council has recently planted. What we pay our rates for isn't it. Can also pick up a nice, sturdy bench seat.
  15. I was asked the best time to plant a tree. "20 years ago. If you didn't, then today" PV is the same.
  16. Aim for zero waste. Bins become redundant then.
  17. Any use https://sealsdirect.co.uk/
  18. I think I read that article 15 years ago. Don't hold your breath. Have you compared the price of roof integrated PV compared to tiling/slating. Bear in mind that you will have scaffolding up anyway.
  19. I clicked on your link and it took me to this: But not having a unit, or account, can't go any further.
  20. One of the problems the public have is caused by governments hanging their tune. "Greenest government ever" "Get rid of this green crap" Same bloke said it. So if a government says something will be done, or something must never happen again, we all know to ignore it.
