It is what it is, an old coal shed that’s been bodged about over the years to make the place more liveable, I can’t see any reason to not be able to get a mortgage on it. how much do you want it ? it needs a bit of facia board. it’s probably cold as buggery in there in the winter if it was insulated badly, which it probably has been. get a survey done and see what else is wrong. like half the houses in England they all need knocking down and re building, nut we continue to keep patching them up.

I'm not sure what you mean by they run at a loss, but then they make money from investing the premium. Isn't that the whole business? Insurance hasn't been purely pooling risk for ages its a risk pooling + investment business. You don't have one without the other. I also didn't think all claims went to the underwriters. The underwriters only stepping in if the primary business lacked funds to pay claims?

Sort of but not entirely right. your terminology is a bit wrong. the joist in red is a rafter. horizontal in blue is a joist so red one rafter needs a seat cut at the bottom to either sit on top of the blue one (joist) or fix it to the side of the blue one. this will lower your facia height. i would also look for a different tile, the double romans are a pain to get the ends looking neat, they also look too big on a small roof. go for a small concrete tile.

Viewed a property and appears to be common of all houses on estate where kitchen has been extended into old coal shed/outbuildings. Unsure if single skin building. I have attached some images there are cracks and lots of repairs over the years to brickwork - I’m unsure if these are mortgageable with kitchen inside the extension. The roof also needs replacing - attached pictures any help would be appreciated - more pics in comments

all the different 'insurers' are just brokers. There are actually only a handful of insurance underwriters and they basically run at a loss, They make their money from investing the money everyone pays into stocks, assets etc.. and that side of it makes they money. Its all just a probability game.

my limited experience of glueing metal together use a windscreen primer on the two clean surfaces --then use windscreen adhesive -- or any equivalent and it will never move -just take care to spread ito ut in an even thin layer --or you will need to press the bits together to squish out any excess they stick the lotus alloy chassis together with it and some audi alloy bodies cars with an occasional mechanical fixing at any edges that could suffer peel-also and aircraft grp /expoxy kevlar wingskins on jumbo jets etc usually a rivet if its clean it will stick anything together and will never move and also will be corrosion proof fairly vital for alloy skins we had problem with an old 1930,s garage showroom that someone modified and cut lots of the cross bracing etc -- it sagged engineer said a steel beam-- no way to get such a long beam in cos of the weight and problems manovering it we made a plywood box beam--glues and screwed which was liftable and is still doing the job 40 years on-- the builder had never done one ,but remembered it from college .LOL lots of ways if you think out side the box

I want to build a canopy roof like attached. Ive only ever done flat roofs and this will be tiled with marley double roman concrete. width will be 9.5m How do i calculate what size timbers to use? Does my paintshop plan look like how they are built? I intend to put gallow brackets at either end and in the centre. ( the house is like you would draw as a kid with 4 windows and the door in the centre) so i was going to put 2 gallows either side of the door so 4 gallow brackets in total. MY brain says to use 2x4 c16 for everything except the facia board which would be 1". But i dont want the facia boards to be massive so can i use smaller timber?

"UK plc" doesn't really exist so we would need to set up a nationalised oil company with storage etc and some legal framework to define who they can and cannot sell to. Which is fine, but we'd have to do it - with all the attendant faff (parliament, setting up the structure, hiring peeps etc. And the resource is dwindling. By 2030 it will be half what it is now. And who thinks we can set up this national company by then? The time to do it would have been around 1980. just to reiterate - THERE IS NO OIL AND GAS BONANZA JUST WAITING FOR US TO CLAIM IT. Nobody, not even the oil industry thinks there is. The only people who say there is are Trump, Farage, Badenoch and their circle.

Hi, I'm just at the stage of designing my house and I have mentally discounted Velux type windows as my experience with them in the past has been that the rain noise wakes me up and causes sleepless nights. However, I'm just wondering if new tech ie triple glazing etc has made this any better? From a quick Google I can see that in theory 3G and acoustic glass should make a difference but I wondered if anyone has some real-world experience of this?

That really doesn't matter, you can make a law that requires them to sell to UK PLC at a hedged price. Gas is pretty much done that way as it's the only way, once it hits landfall it is processed and made grid ready and goes into the national gas grid. Excess is then pumped to underground storage on land at lots of locations depending on spot price and released back again based on a high spot price. Oil tends to be stored at a refinery or storage facility onshore and just sold to the highest bidder - that bit could easily be changed. But most of our oil is too good to be fuel oils, so is generally processed into higher value products - but we closed nearly all our refineries. So it nearly all needs to go somewhere else.

Curtailment payments also happen for gas power stations. The grid buys firm future generation. If the grid can't use it, it's not the generators fault. Likewise there are penalties for not delivering that firm generation. Imagine booking caterers for a big event and then telling them, when they turn up ready, because not as many people came or the car park is full. You'd quickly find caterers would build the cost of cancellation into their quotes and you'd never know how much it cost to do the catering because it would be muddled up with the cost of you canceling them. The grid is building out new capacity especially at the known bottlenecks. I think by 2030 alot of the current curtailment costs will fall away (though total curtailment may rise simply because of the higher renewables overalls)

I'm not certain the geophysics works like that. Some fields are interconnected across national boundaries but I don't think all are and even those that are connected aren't strongly coupled. It's not a big cave of gas or oil, more like a giant sponge where the gas and oil moves slowly - which is why we need multiple wells in one field. So if the UK doesn't extract from them nobody else can either. "Reserved for UK use only" is easy to say but hard to implement. There are no private "UK" only oil companies. They are all multinational. So you'd need to set up one specially. Then what is "uk use only" - selling to a UK refinery (assuming one is set up for the oil). What if that refinery sells abroad? What if the UK wholesaler the refinery sells to wants to sell abroad? How far down the chain do we go?
