my response was to the thought of rainwater harvesting. Everything I know about grey water says the best thing you can do there is to pipe it directly for use rather than trying to store for later use. Even then you would ideally try to use only bio compatible soaps etc.

Area behind water butt looks wet. Is this over spill from the water butt or from gutter etc. hitting ground and splashing? Also appears to be moss where patterned concrete? meets wall. If it is concrete it really should have been finished short of the wall.

I'm thinking of putting an ibc on the highest ground and on a plinth, then feeding the garden by gravity and leftover ufh pipes. filling will be by pumping from a harvesting tank in times of plenty.

Hi noticed issues in property. Built around 1940, suspended floors. House empty due so hard to know if not lived in or issue smell not mould but stale. 2 airbricks front of property under bay window - at the back would have been one under window however looks as if it’s been removed when French doors added. Unsure if this will be affecting sub floor and this is the smell. Also Kitchen is converted in outbuilding- noticed area of damp bricks yesterday and inside in cupboard in that area back of cupboard is mouldy. Unsure if this is related to roof as neighbours downspout coming on to there or from mortar joints at back. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Pics in comments thanks

That works with raw sewage, along with the flow system in a digester, so it will certainly help for grey water... the detergents will be the issue. I've been letting our shower drain spill straight to the tomato patch for years, and they flourish. In the winter I reconnect it to the drain By next season there is no evidence of any residue or smell.

Thanks for all the warnings folks. I definitely need to research this carefully and talk to people with experience of the method we go with.

I'm just saying in my experience I've never seen it done. I'm not talking on 1 or 2 pours either. Maybe where I am its a more common product. Strange that availability is so variable depending where you are in the country. We do have quarries close. Also I have always had from reputable suppliers and so have other people's jobs I've been on.

@joth I’m just returning to this, and hadn’t realised I had failed to respond / thank those who replied. To answer your question, it’s mostly for myself to learn what the ‘proper method’ is as I go - I’ve a very practical method that is working, but I’m keen to use this whole process as a means to learn along the way, and wanted to know if there was a recognised format or style used by M&E designers or architects (I’m finding that the details such as this appear to be outsourced by architects to those who specialise in the different aspects of the build. @Spinny thanks for your reply & the photos - especially useful and similar to ones I’d found elsewhere. This is along the lines of how I’ve done my own annotations on our plans. Since I posted this question I have moved a long way along our first fix and electrical plans are much more mature. Maybe this time I’ll actually write a blog post!

Historically silver was used in water tanks as a anti-bacterial. It was very common to put a silver coin into the water butt to stop it going fusty. I have no idea how effective it was, but it was a widespread practice.

I've very much considered a (or multiple) fish tank bubblers. UV light is going to be sensitive to getting dirty/suspended particles. Ozone could be added to a bubbler but not sure it's required. A decent filter to stop organic matter getting into the tank is also something to think about if you want to maximise cleanliness. Something like a sand bed filter.

Has anyone thought of putting a UV light, or ozone generator into a harvesting system? It may not make it potable, but as they are a cheap way to sterilise water, then may help keep odor down and kill those nasty pathogens that we wash out of our bodily cracks. Don't matter now, it's raining hard.

If it's a listed or otherwise protected building then it needs planning permission. If not, make sure that it doesn't reduce the timber section. I've heard that sand blasting contractors don't tend to consider heritage or structure. That suggests that they've seen a business opportunity and the machine isn't expensive or sophisticated.

Blasting of lead paint in open areas is done wet to prevent dust, the liquid and sludge is collected for disposal. ice blasting is great for car parts like alternators, manifolds, cylinder heads etc but unlikely to be effective on old lead paint, plus very slow progress. definitely do not go near an old beam with a laser, might as well use a blow torch.

I don’t know your floorplan but I’d turn the front window into a patio door rather than add a new door. Mainly for cost and aesthetic reasons, just a suggestion. Good luck looks like a really good project with a lot of cool potential.

I'm afraid I havent yet checked, maybe i'll have a peek when there is opportunity. But that is very good advice! I'll keep that in mind.

Ola! I will try do do as much as I can, I recently did a flip where I did the entire refurb myself (other than plastering and painting) so I do have some experience But the structural stuff like removal of the walls, RSJ installation, balcony frame fabrication to the contractors.
