  3. Change one thing at a time but another thing you could try is to disable the legionaire cycle (I don't know the heatpump but I imagine it might be possible it has tried to use the immersion for that, detected some fault and got into a loop where it keeps retrying).
  4. Thanks again for the feedback. There's no fault showing but your point does flag two things that aren't necessarily related. Firstly: I think the immersion may be faulty as it doesn't get over 20 degrees. I can't see a specific immersion temperature setting. I assume the Ecodan controller would try and use the immersion heater to get to the regular tank temp of 50°. If so then it's not working properly. If anyone knows how it's meant to work I'm all ears! Secondly: Even if true, I can't see how the above issue wouldn't be the reason it trips into immersion mode in the first place. @Dillsue - following this comment I'm trying to isolate the issue. For now I've switched off the heating all together on the controller. I did think that auto adaptive mode would use the stats though. There are three modes - fixed flow, compensation curve and auto adaptive. I assumed all three would still need the stats to call no?

  7. That’s better, it seems like your old self again. I was worried there for a bit. weeny - is that the imperial equivalent to femto? The thermal inertia article is interesting, but makes me think that the chances of me modelling or calculating the effects right now are … v. small. Keep it simple maybe? Suffering similarly to @FarmerN, I’m inclined to use the same solution, while the other 1/2 opens the windows.
  8. Could you share the name of your MVHR supplier please, @Great_scot_selfbuild. I'm in Surrey too, & it would be good to speak with a supplier that's had a BH recommedation.
  9. I'm impressed. I had a real challenge trying to get this done. Principal Designer wasn't really up to this level of detail, and the design I had from the MVHR provider was ok but really very simplistic not far off the level of detail seen by UFH providers producing their off-the-shelf layouts. I was still happy with them overall because the cost was so competitive, but I can empathise with others about the challenge of getting a detailed design of duct and service runs.
  10. It's looking great. The shower room looks very smart. Can I ask what might be a daft question - why do you need to tape and fill the boards so carefully if they are getting plastered later? Is it an airtightness thing?

  14. Weeks 91 to 105 In May we started in the Bathroom. It took us almost a month to first fix plumbing inc wet room former, create stud wall behind sink and toilet, plasterboard, tape and joint and then paint. By mid June David handed the bathroom over to me and I was dry laying the floor tiles out it took me a while as you may remember the plant room floor was the first floor I had ever tiled and I was about to cut larger, heavier, more expensive and diagonal cuts, Oh and it was a wet room. Once I was happy with the tile layout I used Impey water guard system on the walls and the floor. I chose Impey because the former has a sort of backup weep system in that should any water get through the grout on the floor it will drain on top of the membrane and has weep holes in the long trap to escape. I was a bit nervous about unrolling a sticky membrane on my own but I found that ok with the laser for guidelines and just removing a bit of the backing at a time. The sealant that you use in-between the membrane joints on the other hand was the most sticky and messy sealant I have used. Particularly on the floor I could not help getting a bit of tile on the floor/wall joint or the toes of my shoes (when kneeling down) in the sticky sealant days later. I had read on Build Hub about this being sticky but had not comprehended how messy compared to other sealants. On the 24 August I handed the bathroom back over to David to fit the shower, toilet, sink and mirror. Whilst fitting the bathroom David and I also put the plasterboard up in the front bedroom so that once the bathroom was finished I could move straight onto another room with the plasterboard jointing. I have started this and the photos are the end of the first coat so tape not covered yet, screw heads one coat. Could be a while before I carry on with this. David has fitted the kitchen and pantry and the worktop was fitted by Wren. Our water connection has been completed this required a small road closure which had to be completed during school holidays as its the main route the children use who walk to school. The 3 phase electric supply has been moved from the temporary location into the house and we will now start looking for our supplier. We are still temporary connected to the house we live in as the solar on the new build is feeding the old house this will be changed to feed the new build hopefully only a few days before we get the supply connection. Openreach are here at the moment installing our line. The original plan back in 2023 designed and plotted by Openreach was to connect to an electric pole on the border with our neighbours where our electric also comes from. The electric company have recently stopped new connections to their poles, (I don’t know if this is everywhere or just local) so although its been coiled up at the pole a few years from when we made the temporary electric connection, we now had to find a new route. This meant finding our existing connection that was underground (from a different pole) breaking into this and pulling a few meters of cable back from its coiled up position to a junction box with the existing house cable, or digging up the shared drive and laying the cable back to another pole that already had a connection on it. The timing of this meant we had only just dug a trench down the side of the drive for the water, had we known earlier about the change made on new connections to poles we would have obviously laid the cable at the same time as the water. A big thank you to open reach who I think felt sorry for us as had one of my emails been answered in June (when I wanted to check were still putting copper in the ground) we could have laid a cable down the drive, unfortunately new connections sent me round in a few circles but the current solution is ok for now. I guess eventually we will pull a fibre cable in and presumably they will use the copper cables to pull the new fibre though. It’s 2 years from the start of the foundations and we have come a long way and are happy with our progress. Of the most common hiccups that I see on TV programs we are doing OK. We didn’t have a ‘blow out’ on the ICF concrete pour, we haven’t run out of money yet, and we are not expecting a baby (I'm 57) so I think that just leaves health. I am now on a break from the build whilst I recover from surgery but as I had 6 weeks notice we planned my jobs in the build and I now have at least 6 weeks to catch up on a mountain of paper work before I can return to light duties on the build. I have two companies for which I need to complete and submit end of year accounts, the self build VAT to catch up on (see below) and a website for our new holiday rental to set up to take bookings for next year. We are on schedule to move in to the build later this year but Im not sure if I will get back in the build to finish the tape and jointing in our temporary bedroom this year or we move in as it is, but at least we will have a working bathroom and kitchen.   15. It's getting expensive now - any ideas how to do so without smashing the stone? I need to fasten some fence baseplates through capping stone ( Indian 'stone flags' 50mm 600 by 600) So far I've used a 6mm SDS with hammer action - might as well have used a pick axe used it without hammer - I want to finish the job sometime this year splashed a bit of water on the slab - better but still iffy.... Ideas please .....
  16. Is the immersion broken/ failed and when the heat pump goes to call it on (legionella?) it doesn’t heat up and trips out in fault?
  17. There is another that goes to self build exhibitions. It's worth phoning one or both. They will know the rules and wrinkles, if you can do this in retrospect ( I thought you couldn't) and how to present it. Ask how they charge for this too. Good luck and please report back. Lots have this issue.
  18. This one. Territorial is CO2 from within our borders -so consuming stuff from abroad changes that figure alot. But Footprint includes that stuff and has still gone down - albeit not by as much. The footprint is very dependent on the CO2 output of the producer nations we import from (cough china cough).

  20. Which is why they introduced planned obsolescance. I have a tools and household goods from the 70's and 80's that still function perfectly. Anything from mid tweenies onwards I expect to replace every five years (or in some cases I can 'bodge' to keep them working) Effectively better manufacturing now just means producing more stuff, not less. And for most 'western' manufacturers this means more production in China/Vietnam/India. I remember seing a chart a few years ago (possibly New Scientist) that showed each nations actual CO2 output each year based on their consumption of goods (manufacturing and shipping emmissions). Since this was agnostic to where the goods were manufactured it gave a much clearer picture of the UK's standing. It also showed historic CO2 output where ironically we had lower CO2 emmissions overall (for goods) due to manufacturing near to the point of sale, and use of local fuel sources (UK Coal and gas) Anyone know the chart I'm thinking of?
  21. Since it seems they were trying to blind you with (whatever they were trying to blind you with!) I wonder if it would be worth getting a 3rd party involved. I cannot remember who they are, but I think some 'on here' have used a 'VAT Reclaim-Chaser'. Someone will know. I am not in any way doubting your ability to make a claim, but I know (not with VAT, but other stuff) what it is like when one party (which is not me) holds all the cards, and effectively only has to say 'no' and I am powerless. Having someone who has dealt with dozens of claims might get you a 'but hang-on; HMRC said the exact opposite in this claim, and that one....' re-balancing of power. Good luck, whatever.
  22. Lower case w is not a derived unit for two reasons, it is lower case, and no one famous has a name starting with W. Except a watt, W, named after a man. There is ω Which is angular frequency, radian per second. ω is not a w though, it is a lower case Greek omega. Sometimes it is printed in bold, ω.
  23. Bit about the business zero rating the bill is correct. If the invoice was supply + fit, then it should be zero rated at purchase. If supply only, then you pay VAT then reclaim. You should be able to get it back from them with an explanation though, they won't be out any money. Not sure why you'd have issues with windows/door/roofing, that seems exactly what you should be able to reclaim for.

  25. We go through icf wall, so pre installed plastic ducts before the concrete pour. You have the two ducts with an 50mm or so gap between them. No issues with SAP, like the Titon units as they are UK manufacturer and the you can actually talk technical to a person on the same wave length. Buying cheap I had a speed signal issue on one of the motors, parts arrived the next day to fix with instructions. Great service. Being Scotland we do a sap at design and completion. I had all the routes of ducts all designed in during design and I actually bought the 2x MVHR units at the design stage, prior to getting the as designed sap. So no issues.
