  11. If only 24v then no precautions necessary - good practice to mitigate fire of course, terminals can be exposed .. as in vehicles etc.
  12. The cavity must remain open, but only open to atmosphere.
  13. The membrane isn't the issue. It's the cavity tray that has to be there. Maybe full fill under compression will happily stay suspended in the cavity. The drawing has a vertical membrane against the inner leaf, so using wall ties will mean breaching said membrane.
  14. Hello. I am trying to establish what the regs say about access to my LED drivers which I am installing in a cupboard set into the timber frame of my new build. The system is 24v DC (powered from solar batteries, there is no mains involved at any point). I am building a box set into the wall and the carpenter has suggested using some fixing where the front of the cupboard/box can be removed without using a tool. (Such as magnets). This is so we can make the panel as invisible as possible with no screw heads showing, it will be flush with the plasterboard and plaster finish and painted. I expressed concern about the whole access to live terminals without the use of a tool thing but I have only found ambiguity about whether this applies to 24v DC or not. Can someone point to what the actual regs say? One point to make is that in order to pry the front of the panel off one would have to insert something like a thin blade or screwdriver into the gap between the front panel and the wall to remove it. Perhaps that counts as the use of a tool? Regulations seem to be an art rather than actual rules.
  15. as suggested, as long as the fall is in the right direction at the base it'll be ok. The risers can be trimmed carefully so that they appear horizontal, like most things easier said than done though.

This can not be overstated.....we have been extremely fortunate to hit a stream of "gold" that has taken us from one trade to the next, and, keeping them "fed and watered" when on site, paying on the day the invoice is presented has perhaps helped to ensure that as well as recommending the next trade to us, they are happy to vouch for working with us, even though we can be very definite ("picky") about what we want. Sparing his blushes @Benpointer has written an excellent blog, and is a masterclass in keeping trades on track with excellent outcomes. So true, but on a Friday make it 3pm!
  17. I'll do my best... starting from the floor Looking at the Block/Beam Floor schematic, we have Floorspan T4 type beams at 440 centres and suggest Medium density 1450kg/m3 blocks inlaid. Cannot recall exactly what they were, but they were heavy/white and dense jobbies DPM - 300mu 150mm PIR - Ecotherm - comprising of one layer. DPM - 300mu 70mm Cemfloor - no mesh, or fibres Staircase weight - I'm told 204kg. - Wooden Treads * 12 @ 18-20kg each I'm quoted, I havent got as far as having these made. The bottom 2 treads are box like bearing on the floor covering the base, before the rest of the treads that are designed to fit on plates. The plans suggest Structural steelwork to EXC3 Baseplate 600*350 * 8mm - the base plate would be perpendicular to the beams, will certainly straddle over one haha, I won't - Got door casings to fit so that's my next week planned.
  18. why don't you just put the radon membrane lower down, straight across the whole area before the cavity begins? Then you can deal with damp above it at your leisure...
  19. One element of your build calculus appears to be missing from this thread. It's what I fell over multiple times on ours. Networks. Knowing who does what well and who is available when Knowing who knows someone who has experience and dealt with [...] before Knowing which other trades person knows the tradesman you're trying to contact - and failing. Because his phone appears not to be working. Knowing where that tradesman drinks. It's as restrictive a network as the so called Upper Classes, or the Landed Gentry. The White Van Class makes or breaks selfbuilding. It's taken me 10 years to nurture a core of solid trustworthy people. They're pure gold. They lower blood pressure, soothe the psyche, provide military grade one liners. So, since today is a Friday, get down the pub - about 4 ish- because they will be there, swapping war stories, oiling wheels, making stuff happen. How do I know? My son is a chef and runs a local. Why 4 ish ? Because by 6, they've all gone home for their evening meal. Her indoors oils wheels too.

  24. We are replacing the soffits and facias on the top floor this summer, so I guess i'll have a look at how exposed/unsealed the tops of the wall cavities are then.
  25. I just expanded for a bit of fun. The building industry is not full of nice folk. I'm representing a Building Contractor and Client in Scotland at the moment that has been pretty much been ripped off by a small bunch of very well known designers and one " SE? Engineer". This bunch have been on my radar for a while with designs that I've checked and found them wanting as they are incompetent and downright dangerous. The Engineer is puporting to run a limited consultancy company..but there is no record on companies house? The "Architect" is moonlighting it appears.. I'l find out in due course if he and any of the others involved are insured or not. So yes my suspicion is at the moment that my poor Client is a victim of a bunch of chancers puporting to be Engineers and Designers. The Engineer in question is well known in Scotland, big player..in the business papers and so on.. hiding in plain sight, seems he may be a chancer and a fraudulant actor! I'll catch the fu.ker and have his house off him if I can to get some of my young Clients money back. This could be one of your kids, excuse my lack of mercy.

  27. Be interesting to see the as-built version of the drawings. That is a lot of different products being applied at the substructure level. The insulation could be held in place with wall ties, although you could just use blown beads.
  28. Just wondered are the tops of drainage chambers supposed to sit level if you put a spirit level on them in both directions - I mean across the chamber itself rather than the cover ? Just thinking presumably they are made with slight angles/falls on the outlets/inlets. so designed to sit square at the top ?
