Tbf im not really on about re building our network based on coal or running off 100% coal. All I'm saying is its been a choice to demolish our remaining working coal power stations. Will that be a good choice time will tell. I don't think it is. A lot here seem to be doing some impressive mental gymnastics to explain why China are building lots of new coal plants but it's ok for them.

That's more for an 850W system than it cost me for my original 3.68kW system. No wonder there is interest in selling this plug and play kit, it allows suppliers to charge a lot for a small system just for the users that think they are getting something special.

oops on the politics! apologies all. So being PC following contains no names/council/party/gender/location etc: Agree they are meant to and should follow the tick boxes and policy. Sometimes good / sometimes not (as with some building regs too but that's another debate!). and 110% concur on comment about councillors. I attended a parish council meeting recently and there happened to be a county councillor present to provide an update on a few things. This person is involved in planning and on planning committee and another councillor present suggested this person was a planning expert! (which i know for a fact is clearly not the case as was involved in our advice stage and application early on and didn't have a clue and was quite rude about us - we were copied into an email we shouldn't have been, which was also about somebody else too!). Back to the meeting - I was given permission to speak and addressed councillor directly and politely asked why they didn't follow policy including their own local ones as there's been a number of applications approved that clearly shouldn't have been based on policy - and that's just some I'm aware of. Talk about put on the spot - just got waffle about pressure from central government and balance. When ours went through we had to follow policy - which is fine, and we also provided massive BNG which we wanted to anyway. ok exemptions now and times change but policy still current, but they seem now to be ticking boxes other than policy!

Your wasting your time and effort, they have possibly just swallowed all the miss information, from social media and now that is the only thing they believe. Coal, we have about 23 million tonnes of proven reserves in 2023, adding a generation efficiency of 40% that's about 70TW/h. UK uses 300+TW/h. So coal lovers get real, you would power the UK for a few months, then need imports. NOT SELF SUFFICIENT!

But we have the alternative in front of us. We have a road map of how to do it. The national grid have the plans and projects to upgrade the transmission. We have the generation technologies already proven. We just need to do it. It would be madness to spend as much money rebuilding a coal based infrastructure. You saw the report that the cost of a single oil crisis, like the two we have had already this decade, is equivalent to just following the plan we have.

We have had decades, and we already have developed enough tech to do a reasonable job. It's never going to be beautiful and smooth, giving up the unpaid-for externalities/damage from fossil fuels and some other bad behaviours. Passively waiting for some miracle that cannot happen will have us all dead.

There would be an interesting case for people with old style meters, they would just run backwards so any export would be effectively net metered, ie your effective payment per kwh export would be whatever you import unit cost would be! 😁

Via CE/UKCA marking? At least for the device and any requirements for it to operate safely. Obviously it can't control shoddy house wiring (eg not using an outdoor rated socket or just running a really long extension cable) but those risks exist with any electrical equipment.

I've got an ornamental pond (brick and liner). 3 lilies on baskets on the bottom in year one. Gradually one bullied the other two. Now one lives in the bottom sludge, and the removal of leaves keeps the nutrient down and the mass of leaves keeps the summer heat out. 3 fish became about 60 and they appear to live in harmony.

Ummm. Planners follow tick-boxes and policy. Central government not involved and we don't do politics here. Local councillors can be an issue as they have power but little or no training. Everything is negotiable so the contract can be based on work involved and an overview of the cost level, but then fixed.

The whole site was dug down by 200mm before footings were pulled. Even the estimators work schedule states digging down the oversite after you've built up to DPC. I'll stop whining as it's done now, but next time I'll dictate the order of works.

Before you pour is better, while the digger is still there.

why not before? There's topsoil to strip anyway...

ps - worth having certainty on architects fees too such as % of final build costs etc. We did talk to a couple with a view to easing the pressure but decided the cost (inc early stage risk if planning refused) was simply too high and decided do everything ourselves from planning to completion (although not quite finished yet) - fortunately I have sufficient construction industry knowledge, and where I didn't have answers I made sure to establish the facts. Yes more time but has been worthwhile. I work with architects on a daily basis and have utmost respect for the majority, but not all. As a potential self-build client with financial limits I would also need to ensure they listen and understand brief as some will like spending your money and telling you what to do! And again careful due diligence on who you use. eg. a recent planning application we had to object to by an architect acting as agent for client had errors including deliberate lies, lacked important info, some info 'hidden' and is so far removed from policies it should be refused. Clearly had lots of copy/paste text and design. I'd not have been happy had I been the client, particuarly given the likely fees.. Albeit on the flipside wouldn't surpise me if it gets approved with #### planning departments and current government!

I'm getting tired of the comments! My post like many are simply about challenging the 'wisdom' in which construction activities are performed. Digging out the oversize after block work is up to DPC, is the dumbest approach ever. So yes, my advice to anyone embarking on a ground bearing slab, is to dig out once you've poured the footings.

thanks for comments - I was probably hoping for an easy fix / ideas / something I hadn't thought of! Conclusion: Unless I make this more time consuming and ventilate between purlins there's going to be the invisible damp/rot. Then unless I add vapour barrier too and seal it up just introduces just more cold air into the space! To do it properly then have to work around electrics etc too and move lighting - possibly all for little gain as walls not insulated and just a stable door! Be easier to build an insulated 'shed space' from scratch - which I'm not doing so decision is to flog the leftovers (perfect for garden office!) or give them away if no buyers......
