Russell griffiths
The thing I have learned over the years is that if I want to learn something new, then I look at how the professionals do it, what tools they use and so on. I really wanted to get better at painting, especially cutting in between walls and ceilings. you can go to all the home shows and buy fancy rollers with plastic guides that stop the paint getting on the ceiling. Or watch how a professional painter does it, they use a well worn in 3 inch brush, a steady hand and a good eye. if I was doing this job I would do it how a stone mason would, he would make his muck up and Chuck it against the wall, bedding the flints as he goes, keeping the gaps tight and even. no sticks like shit, no nuts and bolts, just bed them in. sorry @Onoff but I think you have gone off tangent so far, you need to go back to basics and just bed them in and point as you go. I've watched the videos of the old boys doing it on YouTube, read up on it etc. Either you use fist size square blocks of flint or random shape, again nominally fist sized ones. The thing is with both types you select those that have depth, a tail I think they call it. In many cases these flints have are not much more than slivers and have very little depth. They are selected for their face features not their size. I can't use different flints either. These have sentimental value having been collected by a relative who was an amateur geologist. There is no precedent for doing this, such thin ones would not be used in traditional walling. Next plan is to clean all the flints up where they have resin/mastic on and coat the backs with a SBR/cement slurry before trying the traditional bedding against a board. Onoff
I let SWMBO lay the flints out in patterns she chose. Threw the mortar into the recess off the end of the trowel, pushed them in, more mortar. Ratchet strapped a bit of scaffold against it and walked away. Came back the next day, another small mix to point etc. Rubbed it in with a gloved hand, brush etc. Bottom panel is going ok I think. Top mortar spacing is too wide but i) hopefully the eye will be drawn away by the coach lantern and intercom, ii) I can't be arsed with it any more.

Onoff
For the stubborn bits of mortar I might go with neat acid. Just gave another 1:1 dilute wash and rinse off. The fines in the mortar are coming through. I'll let it dry out over the Summer then give a coat of waterproofer. You can see how the washed face is "brighter" on the brick faces. @Marvin reckons it's a gate that says "f*** off!" 😂 Aim achieved then!

SteamyTea
32 minutes ago, Onoff said: Krewella Heard this on way home. Seems quite apt at the moment. John Brown Bob Dylan When John Brown went off to war to fight on a foreign shore His mama sure was proud of him He stood straight and tall in his uniform and all His mama's face broke out all in a grin "Oh son, you look so fine, I'm glad you're a son of mine You make me proud to know you hold a gun Do what the captain says, lots of medals you will get And we'll put them on the wall when you come home" And that old train pulled out, John's ma began to shout Tellin' everyone in the neighborhood "That's my son that's about to go, he's a soldier now, you know" She made well sure her neighbors understood She got a letter once in a while and her face broke into a smile As she showed them to the people from next door And she bragged about her son with his uniform and gun And these things you called a good old-fashioned war Oh, good old-fashioned war Then the letters ceased to come, for a long time they did not come They ceased to come for about ten months or more Then a letter finally came saying, "Go down and meet the train Your son's a-coming home from the war" She smiled and went right down, she looked everywhere around But she did not see her soldier son in sight But as all the people passed, she saw her son at last When she did she could hardly believe her eyes Oh, his face was all shot up and his hand was all blown off And he wore a metal brace around his waist He whispered kind of slow, in a voice she did not know While she couldn't even recognize his face Oh Lord, recognize his face "Oh tell me, my darling son, pray tell me what they done How is it that you come to be this way?" He tried his best to talk as his mouth could hardly move And the mother had to turn her face away "Don't you remember, Ma, when I went off to war You thought it was the best thing I could do? I was on the battleground, you were home acting proud You wasn't there standing in my shoes" "Lord, I thought when I was there, God, what am I doing here? I'm a-tryin' to kill somebody or die tryin' But the thing that scared me most was when my enemy came close And I saw that his face looked just like mine" Oh Lord, just like mine "And I couldn't help but think, through the thunder sound and stink That I was just a puppet in a play And through the roar and smoke, this string is finally broke And a cannonball blew my eyes away" As he turned away to walk, his Ma was still in shock Seein' the metal brace that helped him stand But as he turned to go, he called his mother close And he dropped his medals down into her hand
