A key issue is the 2 structural steels that support the glass . Most companies want to powder coat etc with a mega price attached ! Anyone tried any steel paint ? Im tempted to buy some and simply paint some of the internal structural steel just to test how it looks . I assume someone else has done this and has some exposed painted steel they can show me ..... Cpd Posted April 16, 2018 Share Posted April 16, 2018 In the past i have used liquid galvanised paint as a base coat and then a two part paint to finish, seemed bomb proof. Can you not just get the components hot dipped galvanised ? Did this a lot when i was in Australia, you cant paint it for some time after dipping though...... If it were me, if any of its outside the interior envelope, id prime it with this :http://www.rust.co.uk/custom-421-rust-proofing-body-primer/c32736/ When i did my steels, I painted them with automotive direct gloss 2 pack. Sprayed. But over etch primer as it was all inside. But you could do it with a roller, which will be close in terms of finish, but will require 3-4 coats as its quite runny. The end result will be tough, resist rust, and if you spray it look really good. Dont spray 2 pack without the right gear though! Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I’ve had stuff powder coated and it’s not that expensive. And I agree with @Cpd that galvanising is as good - or better - and not that pricey as they do it by weight. Admittedly it's on the edge of Ireland facing the Atlantic but it is rusting where galvanized beside it isn't. Onoff Posted April 17, 2018 Share Posted April 17, 2018 I used to have a lot of stuff fabricated. You can powder coat over galvanised steel. As a pretty good but lesser option powder coat over zinc flame sprayed steel after first shot blasting to Swedish Standard SA2.5. To powder coat straight onto bare steel is madness imho. A lot of lads do it on their car suspension components, subframes etc. One crack or chip and water gets in and under the powder coat. 2 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

One coat primer, one undercoat and one top coat, or a combination of specialist paints should be fine. Powder coating tends to chip and also loses its gloss.
