So I need (hopefully this year :) ) to do some plastering in the bathroom. The 3m  x 3m ceiling and half a wall above the bath 3m wide and 1.3m wide.

These are the tools I have collected over the years:

A hawk, a mixing paddle and a couple of trowels one being a big stainless steel one, both from Wickes.

The ceiling has 4 downlights and the big body dryer - all easily removeable.

The wall over the bath:

A couple of damaged patches on the wall. Tbh most of this damage will be covered by a nom 4" filed upstand:

No idea how this occured or how to prepare so it doesn't show through. The half wall will be painted.

Concrete floor to ceiling is 2470mm. Standing in socked feet I can touch the ceiling but wouldn't be able to get any pressure on it.

Going to have a crack myself. Worst case I eff it up and get the BiL to go over it.

Other than tape the joints any tips?

Should I get one of those internal corner trowels?

Cheers

@Nickfromwales says to step away from the float and trowel......

Can't text whilst he's driving? :)

- Pay

- Get a trade in

- Step away

...all terms that are alien to me!

SWMBO is keen for me to get her brother to do it rather than try myself but I really want to have a go...

Top tip

Get a tub of cream of tartar

Half a tea spoon per bag

Makes the finish easier to use and acts a a retarder

Forgot to say always coat the joints with a separate mix

Even on a small  cieling

Tapered edge always show if you don’t

So you do a small mix, do the joints then bin it?

Cream of tartar in first coat and finish coat?

Just remembered I bought one of these too:

I've two 4' joints that just butt up and aren't tapered edges:

Is there a standard say head height from the ceiling for when plastering?

Not sure.  Why not make a model and have a go on that.

I normally adjust my stilts so that my head is about 300 mil off the cieling

@Onoff why risk the finish to save a few quid?

I'm with you on this one. Too much effort gone in to date to 'practice' here !?!

That trowel is horribly square and sharp. At the VERY least you'll need to borrow a worn in trowel, or buy a ready worn-in one new. That trowel you've got is good for a bit of cement roughing and nowt else.

Listen up boyo !!!! Not this time, ok. ;)

"Practice on a shed or garage wall" says the man that has tried to plaster 3 times, only.

And as for body dryers, I popped my nads in a Dyson Blade today, just for a laugh, now I have two acres to nurse :/

did you also get thrown out of the leisure centre? :D

He did, but not because of his swollen nutsack.....it was because he had his speedos on back to front. :D

Anyway.....back on track, plastering stilts, they seem quite pricey, has anyone ever made their own?

Plenty of stilt projects on Pinterest, YouTube etc. The plastering ones seem to have springs in them?
