Are flush mounted hobs difficult to fit perfectly?

Another flash gimmick and waste of money thinks philistine me.

 

But "we" are attracted to having a flash hob because it will look sleek and be easy to clean.

 

But will it? A 1mm gap will fill with crumbs and spills and be difficult to clean. Maybe they come with a clever and unobtrusive gasket. Or a tube of special mastic.

 

And cutting it into a stone surface will need some clever and ultra precise work, presumably with a ledge for support. Eg cut the hole then router the perimeter.. to 0.0 mm.

 

I've done no homework. In other words this question is the start of my homework.

I would like one, but think it is too hard to make it dirty free.

And a replacement hob won't fit.

This totally sounds like a scene on grand designs where the woman boasts about her expensive kitchen widget and kevin Mc Kevin understands how they are 10 million over budget. 

 

Sounds like a way to lock you in to only being able to buy a certain type of hob, whereas a normal one is basically the same size hole. I'd do myself a favour and just keep it simple and not create my future self another nightmare.

If thats a solid wood worktop what happens if it shrinks?

Looks like it may have been around a while but not catching on.

So now you have to guess whereabouts to put your pans. So now you just destroyed that mobile phone someone left on the invisible induction area. So now it is invisible, except for the kitchen extractor positioned prominently above it. So now you have to choose a compatible worktop only.

SWMBO has chosen one with a small frame at the edge with the specific opinion that this will help keep spills on the hob. I think the flush mounted can look very cool (saw a white one in a white worktop somewhere) but do we actually want hobs where the boiling over and the spills and spits etc are free to run over the worktop ?
