Spray painting - is it any good?

We are progressing nicely with the build and have just booked the plasterer. This is making me start to think about the monumental task of painting the place! 

Spray painting looks to be a potential route, but I am a bit nervous about forking out lots of money for decent kit and then making a pigs ear of it! 

Any guidance reference spray painting or other "faster" ways of painting, rather than brush and roller, would be much appreciated.

If you spray it your still supposed to back roll over it to get the correct finish, straight from a sprayer is too perfect.

Spray painting is great, I love it. But you need to mask everything up properly against overspray and spray mist. This takes time. You also need to spend some time with each type of paint you use to get the settings right through watering down the paint to ideal consistency and then the sprayer so you get a nice consistent spray. Both are worth it in my view as it ends up saving a lot of time. I've found my sprayer and paint (clay paint) finishes with a slight texture so no need to go over it with anything.

I sprayed our house top to bottom with white trade paint after first fix wiring. 

 

The only thing I had to mask was the windows and the stairs but that still took ages. 

 

I used a hire machine. One tip is to make sure it has a new/serviceable nozzle. The one used wasn't and I had to buy an extra half dozen buckets of paint as it went on too thick.

I got mine done by professional painters, two men three days (at least one day masking). Would have taken me weeks, and weeks … Not worth buying the kit to do a one off job IMO.

I was reluctant to pay someone to do something I could do myself; did one ceiling with a roller and realised how long it was going to take to paint the whole house...  Painters are not that expensive and come with all the kit 😉

I was amazed how long it took me to roller my place. 43m², vaulted ceiling. Not exactly a huge project. But the fresh plaster just drank up paint. 

Worst bit of all was the cement fibre board behind the stove. It seemed to take dozens of coats before that wall looked uniform

SWMBO tried spray painting. Gave up due to the kit. 

Switched to what she knew and spent probably about 12 weeks on and off rollering and cutting in.

About 270m² of ceilings alone.

 

But, it looks great. Plan is to live with white for several months, then apply colour if/when we know it's right

Someone on here recently did a blog post with their place getting sprayed and back rolled i asked a question in the blog. I'd be paying someone I've tried it before with a cheap sprayer, had to pole sand the lot. 

 

As it happens a painter I know on site prefers to mist coat them before the skim has fully dried. Says they drink the paint otherwise too much topping up the roller. Can't really see a problem with this for a mist coat watered down anyway. He gets 150 a plot for mist coat whether it be 2 bed or 4 bed. He can finish them by 1pm and get back to the plot he's in. Has a neat corner roller for internals
