oranjeboom Posted September 20 Posted September 20 So I've started installing my staircase only to find I am one wooden screw short. Supplier of the staircase kit was from Sweden and that was a few years ago. Was hoping to find a quick UK solution to source the screw from. The screw joins secures the balustrade to the main post at the top of the stairs. It's all pre-drilled and therefore has a specific helical screw size and pattern that the screw gets tightened into, so I can't just use any helical size. I've tried doing an image search with few accurate results. What specialist wood fixing businesses are there I can try? I suspect I'll have to go back to the Swedish supplier....

FuerteStu Posted September 20 Posted September 20 I thought the difference between a bolt and a screw was it's intended cavity... From the flat end, and pan head im guessing it has a specific depth locking point, but it doesn't look like a standard M5, M6 or M8 thread and goes into piloted timber therefore a screw. 2 hours ago, SteamyTea said: It is a bolt, not a screw.

JohnMo Posted September 20 Posted September 20 1 minute ago, FuerteStu said: therefore a screw. Not always, really depends what industry you are discussing, as many industries or even manufacturers describe bolts and screws to be different things although talking about exactly the same thing. The meaning changes between countries. When I went through my aviation training I was given very specific training on what a bolt and screw were and then in the oil and gas industry the terms were mixed and not very specific. A write up here https://www.accu.co.uk/p/131-difference-between-screws-and-bolts
FuerteStu Posted September 20 Posted September 20 Regardless of semantics I would contact the manufacturer.. Most will happily supply extra fixings without questions
Alan Ambrose Posted September 21 Posted September 21 I can’t believe that @Pocster had passed this one up. 1

garrymartin Posted September 21 Posted September 21 Almost certainly a RAMPA screw (not bolt 😉), though I'm not sure what specific type. It's a German brand, but is often used in Swedish (and other countries) staircase manufacturing. https://www.rampa.com/eu/en/RAMPA-STAIRCASE-SCREWS-TYPE-TKH/3490900010100 https://www.junoindustries.eu/en/products/rampa/screws-with-metrical-thread/rampa-staircase-screws-type-tkm.html Maybe give RAMPA a call or send them an email with the photos? If you do, measure the head diameter, and the diameter of the screw, and if there is writing around the top (possibly the screw type), tell them what it says. RAMPA GmbH & Co.
