junglejim Posted December 21, 2024 Posted December 21, 2024 Just wondering if it’s normal for double glazed window glass to flex in the wind? We have one large window on the gable end that the glass is visibly flexing in the wind so I’m wondering if this is likely to be a problem or not?
ProDave Posted December 21, 2024 Posted December 21, 2024 We had that in our last house. Sitting during the first gale watching the glass flex debating will it pop or not. 22 years later it is still there no damage and no doubt flexing today in the strong wind.
Conor Posted December 21, 2024 Posted December 21, 2024 Our entire master bedroom part of the house flexes in the wind. Steel, comcrete, glass are more flexible than you realise.
JohnMo Posted December 21, 2024 Posted December 21, 2024 Things flex so they don't break. Our 3G windows flex, think at full design load our 2m tall windows are allowed to flex many millimetres - according to the structural calculations.
Gone West Posted December 21, 2024 Posted December 21, 2024 We had 4m high triple glazed windows in our gable and they flexed far more than I was initially pleased with, but years later they're still there.
nod Posted December 21, 2024 Posted December 21, 2024 Slightly off topic We had winds of 70-80 mph a couple of weeks back My friend fro Aberdeen laughed and said “That’s just a breeze” 😂😂

Alright if your are not in a boat.
junglejim Posted December 21, 2024 Author Posted December 21, 2024 (edited) window is SW facing. 40-50mph today but that’s fairly common here so not concerned what it will be like when we get to 70+ which is a few times a year. The window is approx 2 x 1.5m Edited December 21, 2024 by junglejim

That’s good to know. Maybe it’s me just not used to this but this was 40mph and we’re fairly regularly get 60+ so slightly worried what that will look like. (Ignore the internal drips …. Haven’t sealed the top yet 😬 My Movie 1-1080p30H.mov

Redbeard Posted December 22, 2024 Posted December 22, 2024 Re video: Strewth! That's more flex than I have ever seen, but it is bigger than any single pane of mine. I can see why you are concerned!
jayc89 Posted December 22, 2024 Posted December 22, 2024 I have a 1.5m x 1.5m single pane on an exposed west elevation, never seen that before. Will have to check next time we have a strong wind!
