stephanh Posted September 30, 2024 Posted September 30, 2024 starting extension to bungalow (1970 I believe) - I had expected a 350mm cavity wall with Thermalite inner leaf 100mm celotex PIR 50mm air gap and medium dense outer leaf. Spec now reads as 350mm wide but with a full fill 150 Knauf insulation I feel a little uncomfortable about the full fill aspect, although reading the Knauf description I shouldn't do. Am I being too suspicious about the loss of the air gap?
Canski Posted September 30, 2024 Posted September 30, 2024 Mine works fine with 100 mm aircrete blocks 125 mm full fill insulation and a brick skin to the outer. I built it myself though so I know that there are no gaps in the insulation and not a single mortar snot on it either. I don’t live in an exposed area though but have full confidence in it.

It is nearly always full filled. As it is single storey and sounds like rendered the risk of moisture transfer is very small.
joe90 Posted September 30, 2024 Posted September 30, 2024 (edited) I full filled my 200mm cavity with dritherm batts, they came with a bba certificate for full fill. Damp did penetrate the outer brickwork at one stage but the insulation did not wick the damp into itself (I cured the damp problem afterwards.). So in my opinion it’s nothing to worry about but good for you for asking 👍 Edited September 30, 2024 by joe90
Dave Jones Posted September 30, 2024 Posted September 30, 2024 extension regs are a lot softer than new build. I'd still go for 150cav (if it works into existing walls) and 150 dritherm batts.
nod Posted September 30, 2024 Posted September 30, 2024 We used full fill on our last build Seem to work ok
Nickfromwales Posted September 30, 2024 Posted September 30, 2024 I fully-filled my undercrackers when the bill to service my car landed. 1

stephanh Posted October 1, 2024 Author Posted October 1, 2024 thanks for replies - I shall swallow the doubts and full fill
JackofAll Posted October 2, 2024 Posted October 2, 2024 300mm full fill knauf dritherm 37 all good,(so far) 🙂

stephanh Posted October 5, 2024 Author Posted October 5, 2024 Please, don't get started on V8's - it could see the extension binned and another bolide on the drive, although that may include marital disharmony as well 3
Nickfromwales Posted October 5, 2024 Posted October 5, 2024 The only member of my household that gets a bath EVERY night lol. 2

Bricklayers cannot drop mortar down the gap (making a dampness bridge at the bottom) , or their empty cans or fag packets. Plus they can't leave gaps anywhere it is awkward for them. I've specified it many times and observed it in use. It has been good on site and in life. Do make sure you have the right waterproof product obviously, as they can look similar, or a bricky might get the wrong stuff. 1
Andehh Posted October 5, 2024 Posted October 5, 2024 Poverty end of the spectrum here... 150mm full full, still a wonderfully warm home and at £150 a month incl daily washing machine and dish washer... What's not to like!!

Not wanting to take this thread off topic perhaps I should start new thread 😉 It's 5.4 Litres of hand built V8 - made a bit nuttier by AMG - then thrown in a car with a short wheelbase and not enough room in the arches for a more suitable width rubber so anything more than a moderate throttle lights the tyres up. 🤣
