Down in the Dumpies!

I hope this is the right place to post this ....and i hope you "pro's" dont think I am cheeky ....but here goes.

I am in the process of submitting Full App for a house and its has already had losts of unexpected costs and stuff
(i wont bore you with) ....So I have tried to save a few sov's ...whenever i could .

Teaching myself the basics in Autocad ...and reading up on Surveying and the like ...
So when on the Pre-App it also said "site levels would be an advantage" and also mentioned "spot levels"
I of course sat in front of youtube vidoes and read some free PDF on my ereader about basic surveying..back sight,

fore sight, temporary datums and how to represent them on autocad .

So i went to a pal that i REMEMBERED had a level and staff ...but he has flogged it on the old eBay, last year.
a lovely Basic Leica Model with Tripod and 5m staff too ...he only use it for a week ..DAMN.

So what I am asking is does anyone have a functional or spare set for sale ?

Feel free to call me a cheapscate, blackleg ..or whatever the terms are these days LOL

National Hire do a Leica TotalStation for £70 for a week and that will give you every single spot level including its GPS location ......

Just remember to mark a few "permanently" so that you can find them in the future without paying another £70..!

Hi Ed,

I know I will get shot for this but I bought a Chinese jobbie off Ebay and it's been spot on so far (famous last words). I'm afraid I never lend my tools out (hard and fast rule I've always stuck to) but I'm guessing you might be in Milton Keynes which isn't that far from my plot. So if it's something we could do on a weekend day, I might be able to pop up (I live in London) and help you

I don't blame you Vijay, I have lost many a drill Key, /software Driver disk, Laptop Adaptor, extension lead ...even a set of ladders !
Lending stuff out LOL..my postcode is MK10

I may end up buying a cheapie, and reselling (as one person stated) ..I dont like being responsible for others tools either ....and I am careful.

Your offer of help is very graciously received! as I am a datum-virgin!

either way I have to make a decision soon as once the soil survey is done ...its only the spot levels i have remaining to add to my application ...and its getting to be quite a bundle !

In your (and others experience) is it better received on Paper ...i.e. A4 Paper, Rolled up charts and filled in forms, or all on a DVD/Pen Drive ..or a mixture?
(the Application I mean) ..I suppose cloud is an option ....but I dont like to be too presumptive and look and risk offending a non-technophile ...

(perhaps i worry too much!)

Ours was submitted electronically as a set of PDFs all bound into one document.

Sadly Milton Keynes is a bit out my way - I am in Kent otherwise I would have given you a hand for a day. I have a total station and have taught myself to use it so it ain't hard, I paid £650 for it but I was looking on ebay / gumtree for 6+ months before the one I wanted came along at a price I was prepared to pay.

thanks

I have bit the bullet and got one online £160 for the full kit 24x Dumpy, Tripod and Staff delivered.

Once i dont need it I will put it on the ads section on here !

Hold on ...i cant see an ads section ?

On a forum I used to Admin on (Amateur Radio ...i know, i know) we grew a really active buy and swap section.
It was so popular that we used to charge (nominal fee) to post adverts ....not for profit ...mainly for site costs, hosting etc

..we even had some left over for the Christmas Competition ..which sadly owners and admins couldnt win :(

it was either that or the dreaded "BANNER AD's and POPUPS"..which when you are looking for a review on a Yaesu Radio..
...cheap viagra, PPI and GO Compare ..is what you REALLY want !?!

I used to teach the C&G Radio Amateur Certificate back in the early 80's.  Rather memorably my GP was one of my students.  I stopped playing about with amateur radio many years ago now, when the whole thing was just becoming swamped with people buying, rather than making, gear, and most of the chat was a bit like the hifi fanatics, bragging about the latest super duper widget they had bought..................

Seems like we all have a lot in common - I guess Google could profile us. I made quite a lot of gear for packet radio, did some work with 2m moon bounce, still got the power valves somewhere, and spent a lot of time making steerable aerials for UoSat. Then I got into digital stuff, networks and the like so left the Ham stuff alone, still got the full setup in my workshop, turned it on just now seems to be alive!

small world.
well i used to like 40m Dx...but i had to take down the antenna due to complaints...

but i fell into the 2/70 VHF rut and ended up chatting with locals all the time.

I was the "young un" at 40 then and i got fed up and depressed with all the talk of prostates
and tomato blight ..

so i went D-Star and it all went too "gadgety" for me ...and i packed it all away.
i have about 4 HF sets, 2 VHF Mobiles, too many tuners, PSU's and not to mention
Goldlines and voice processor ....

but you know?

you cant buy haappines ...i could never recapture the early 80's talking to truckers in Wyoming on a President Grant USB
...£30 it cost me ...priceless!

anyway i will shut up now or I will get a temp ban for off-topic and boring the readership.

73's to you all
(oops)

Never went ham myself, but did a fair bit of CB in the early eighties. My teenage years had me in the local TV and video repair outfit on Saturdays, and we were also one of the better "legal" outlets for 27MHz stuff. Two of the three Directors of the firm were heavily into the Amateur end tho.
