Telephone/broadband strategy for new build

Hi, I appreciate the replies. I've now put in the neighbour's address to the BT site. They are the only line from the pole and that pole is within an easy in the air run to our plot. The broadband speed is 32-36 Mb for "fibre essential" and 32-50Mb for Fibre 1. No difference if broadband only or broadband with phone. Given that the world is moving on line I guess I ought to be looking for better?

I'll register the plot with OP - we have an address registered but not yet on the Royal Mail permanent address list (that'll change once we occupy the caravan). In the meantime I'll explore the 4G options.

So complicated - give me concrete, timber and steel anyday!

Be careful on relying on what their website says.  It says I can get fibre etc which is total nonsense.  I think the system works on postcodes as opposed to actual lines that run through the postcodes.  Speaking to the neighbours that are on the line that you’d be connected to is your best bet, to see what speeds they get.

You will need to ask a

service provider to connect you to get a cost from Openreach for the connection.

No you can do it direct with OR now.

https://www.openreach.com/building-developers-and-projects/fibre-for-developers/registering-your-site

Because of the BR change (Jan 23) they have opened it up to all new builds, not just large developers. Nice little money spinner I'm sure.

Of course this site is only for fibre installation. If they say no, you can only have copper, I don't know what happens but presumably you get sent back out and through the supplier-talks-to-openreach run around

Openreach have been great with me. I only enquired about site connection and without warning or discussion they installed a junction box right in front of the site for me. They also said that they drive past every now and then and when I’ve dealt with all my invisible animals they will deliver the ducting for me. All FOC including the connection.

I got my Smarty £16/month, unlimited data, SIM today (no cancellation fee). Popped it in old phone, registered the card and away it goes. Not done a speed check on it yet as went out to play.

Shall download some porn later.

Did I say porn, meant educational science video, which is worse, it involves the mind and body.

But £449 for set up and £75/month ?

That ain't cheap, I'll stick to to my 4G and £35 per month sim card. Did look at the smarty one above but that's on 3 and the coverage here is none existent.

Seems I have a choice of Vodafone or O2.

All our networks are equally as slow.

Think 3 and Vodafone are going to merge. Vodafone have always seemed expensive to me.

But that's nearly £1000 in the first year for internet access!

5.2 years worth of internet access at £16/month.

Or for the same money, you can have 5 mobile hotspots.

Had fibre at the last house, 4G this, don't really notice much difference. We surf internet and watch on demand TV mostly, no heavy gaming.

Biggest difference I have ever seen is getting a new TV, opening Netflix, for example is way faster on the new TV, compared to older digibox. On the same 4G, both are hardwired not WiFi.

Some slowness is down to hardware design, not internet speed from the looks of it.

What speeds do you get on Starlink?

Starlink quote 25Mb/s - 100Mb/s down and 5Mb/s - 20Mb/s Up for a "standard" connection

I get a symmetrical 60Mb/s - 90Mb/s on 4G. (£14/month unlimited from Three)

I get 14.8 down / 3.37 up on 4G (EE) ... and

38.5 down / 13.1 up on Starlink

You need to be clear on your units. MB/s vs Mbps or MegaBytes per second vs Megabits per second.

For Starlink we nominally get over 200Mbps download and 20Mbps upload. I’ve seen it as high as 257 down and 30 up. It’s also been very reliable.
