Conor
I've a spare 203x203mm X 46 UB (incorrect order) that I can potentially utilise in my balcony. Is it feasible to cleanly cut such a beam in half using a 10" grinder?! Guessing the steel is a good 6-7mm thick.
ProDave
To get a neat cut I would be looking to rig something up to make a "table saw" out of the grinder with a fence, so you can slowly feed the beam through to get a neat cut. Or if you have a table saw, see if you can get a grinding disc to fit it?
Russell griffiths
Yes easy with a petrol cut off saw or a 9 inch grinder. If I was desperate I could do it with a 5 inch grinder and the skinny 1mm blades. Edited December 24, 2022 by Russell griffiths
Conor
I do have a diamon blade for the table saw, but the beam is 4.5m long so not easy to move around. And I think the bore is too big for big for an oxide blade. I'll go with the grinder, cut needs to be reasonably flat but not perfect, I'll be welding a plate to the ends. Might get an extra pack of blades tho!
Russell griffiths
By the time you messed about getting a table saw set up I would have cut it and been heading down the pub. Cut it 3mm too long and tidy the end up with a grinder.
Tosh
I've cut plenty of those with a 9inch grinder. Key is getting some good quality thin cutting discs.
Onoff
It's actually a UC 😂 Flanges are 11mm thick and the web 7.3mm. 9" grinder with 2mm discs all day long.
SteamyTea
An angle grinder is the second best tool you can have. Every household should have one.

I had a wired one for a long time. Then partnered it with a ryobi battery one - have been pleasantly surprised how good it is. Chews through batteries but that's to be expected. What's the first? Combi drill? Hammer? Maybe we could do a desert islands discs of tools 🙂 I haven't got an angle grinder in my tool box yet... Sort of used it as a yardstick for 'out of my competency area' and always been too scared. How would it change my life? Now I want one!
