New BT broadband checker

Recommended Posts

This is truly an act of fiction, or a random number generator?

I really want to click the "register an interest" button but don't want to accidentally commit to anything.  but just out of curiosity I tried a few other addresses in our group of houses.  Strange for ours it says superfast broadband up to 80MBPS is available, but for all our neighbouring properties, it says superfast at a speed of 0-1 MBPS is available.

Before I dumped BT and went for the wireless service I had been told there were no plans for FTTC here.

Had some goons messing around in the BT inspection pit down our end of our private road a few months back. When I asked, they said they were checking if they could get FFTC down the conduit - and it looked good, advising that we look out for a sticker on the main road cabinet. Well, the sticker has been up for a couple of weeks now but the checker linked to in this thread says no.

^^^^ Yes a random answer generator.

I know FTTC is not available here, there is no cabinet and the only junctions are (usually flooded) underground pits with supposedly waterproof junction pots.  And I had been enquiring if / when FTTC would be available here, only to be told there are no plans, so I find this checker somewhat insulting as it is clearly giving wrong results.  What are they hoping to achieve?  Keep customers hanging on in the hope they are going to get fast broadband?  Or just waste peoples time?

Yes the state of the chamber out in our road is quite alarming. The three conduits branching off to the houses are usually underwater and the junction box is somehow dangling just above.

Rural folk should look into Starlink. They’ve even recently reduced the price for both the kit and the monthly fee (from £89/month to £75) It’s not cheap but it’s a great alternative to BT Nevereach and faster than anything you’ll realistically get over copper. Copper can go much faster if you live within metres of the cabinet. It can also in theory get close to fibre speeds but not for anyone living rurally. FTTP is also very unlikely for the vast majority of rural locations.

Starlink has  also become faster recently as I am consistently getting over 200Mbps down and 20Mbps up. Yesterday it was running at 260Mbps down and 25Mbps up. Their long term plan is more satellites with high speed connections between them in a lower earth orbit to improve latency. It will eventually rival fibre.

I wonder …. Does starlink function as a mesh ? I.e if your satellite is knocked out of action ( by failure or deliberately ) does it simply re route to another node / satellite ??

I was speaking to a friend this morning about this broadband checker, that fictionally tells me FTTC and up to 80MBPS is available here.

He says the reason it says that, is because of the wireless service we have available which I am now using.

My reaction is what cheeky lying (rude word) Open reach are, trying to take credit for something that is nothing to do with them and has only come about because they have not put in the investment needed in the infrastructure to give us proper decent speed wired broadband.

It should not be claiming FTTC is available.  Fair enough if it mentioned faster broadband was available by another provider on another network.

"no build announced" for us, which is laughable because BT have already washed their hands of the area and it's part of the Project Stratum initiative. Even moreso as BT have ceased new copper lines at the two local exchanges...

Stratum delivered for me. Fibrus has been great when we eventually got it.  Just renewed new deal for another 24months.
