I know it’s not exactly the weather to think of this but am planning ahead !

Want to be as energy efficient as possible so no patio gas bollocks .

Anyone experienced the infra red heaters ? ; heat the organic mass not the air …????

Infra red heaters.  Isn't that the same principal used by gas patio heater.

And you said it.

If your chucking a few kWh at a heater in the open, no what sort it is, you will get no rewards, just a big bill.

Heated jacket?  Heat you, not the world.

I’m not sure . That’s why I’m asking . Though I did mean infra red electric powered not gas . I thought the principle was exactly that “ heat you not the world “ and you said it .

Not just the cold that is the problem.

Rain can ruin an evening under the stars.

So you need a roof.

And no one likes a chilly wind, so walls (and ventilation if the wind is con carne).

So going to be similar to a house.

All it really needs is some sturdy glazing in the roof to look though.

If only there was some walk on glazing available.

Or just get a NASA feed:

How about heated chair covers?  100W at 12V into a strap on seat cover, intended as a retrofit for a car, makes a huge difference.  Uses a lot less power than a radiant thing heating the world.

There is an inverse square law that applies to infra-red heaters and other forms of radiant heating.  If they give you X amount of heat when you stand 1 m away than you get X/4 heat at 2 m and X/9 at 3m etc.  The radiation that misses you heats the patio flooring and that, in turn, heats the air.

So basically SWMBO stands 1cm in front of heater .

Battery powered heated jacket and a fire pit for the ambience. I’m going to build something like as a wind break at the bottom of our plot

Don’t have that space - but it’s a good idea

I built a conservatory, looks like it’s outside but (with windows and doors shut) much warmer 😎

Same here. Has been just the ticket in the current heatwave (we didn't get the 40oC one at the end of July but it's been 30oC for close to three days in a row here). The Sun is blocked by the house at the hottest time of day (back of house faces NE). Makes the room a proper refuge. With sliding doors open on three sides a decent through draft is almost guaranteed. Can also drift in and out freely so virtually outdoors with a warm roof.

Excuse SWMBO, she was a bit pixelated by the afternoon.

Cheers @Big Jimbo built it a long while ago but recently given it a big makeover. Always had a plan to add a garden room on the back (original planning objections meant no window on our garden facing elevation 🙄) and a room-in-roof on the garage for my toys.

East wind at the moment.  Haar rolling in off the North Sea overnight but it usually burns off in the day to give clear skies before rolling in again in the evening.

No star (or meteor) gazing tonight.

Thunder storms predicted here tomorrow.

10:51 got fed up not seeing anything so started to look at the moon. Very nice sight in itself but then Bam! a very bright fireball pretty much straight past the moon heading SE. Not a pissy white streak but orange/red thing with long tail, like a firework. Amazing.
