Tennentslager
North Glasgow so winter winds can be wild and it’s a little exposed. 3.5m sq, same shape as the wrecked Aldi fabric gazebo, killed by last nights May winds. New Expensive patio furniture is on order and it’ll protect this in winter too It’s to cover this decking, meets Scottish permitted development rules, snip The permitted development rules for an ancillary building are: it's located at the back of the house it's not used as a separate home to live in it, and any other development, does not take up half or more of the 'curtilage' – this means half or more of the grounds behind your home it's not higher than 4 metres at the highest point any part that's a metre or less from the boundary is no higher than 2.5 metres the eaves (the part where the wall meets the roof) is no higher than 3 metres if the land is in a conservation area or in the grounds of a listed building, the ancillary building has a footprint of less than 4 square metres something like this but just posts on the corners. How to anchor the posts? Roof structure for a square hipped roof, I’m not bad with timber but by no means professional? I’m inclined towards a beefy structure with say 6x2’s for the perimeter of the roof edge? Appearance from underneath, thinking frame it, paint/stain the frame and then sheet it in ply (maybe pre painted in a contrast from the frame) then felt tiles as they easy and neat? Don't plan gutters but maybe? id welcome the collective knowledge...
daiking
I’m gazing at my Aldi special now worrying about the wind. Gusting already but not supposed to windy till later. Took it down last week when it was 40mph ?. Forecast is 35mph+ later. Wont you have to lift the decking and fix your post into the ground?
Temp
Whats the ground like? Screw in anchor for 4x4 post. Shop around as might well find cheaper versions.. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mayne-580D-BK-Dig-Ground-Anchor/dp/B00191RWKA
Tennentslager
Okay so I’ve decided to go ahead and drop the uprights into a hefty pit and concrete them in. spent close to a grand today on timber, tiles, paint and whatnot but the timber guys could not do the 4 uprights I need 4 @ 130mm square planed at 3m in length, nice bullnose chamfered but I can do that myself if need be. They will be stained possibly painted. where does a man get a hold of such?

I would have thought any “decent” timber merchant could supply that, my local one can. Only needs a thicknesser/planer ( I have one but am a long way from you ???) Tennentslager
Back from holiday, first time I’ve chosen Aberdeenshire, lovely people, lovely wee fishing village, everyone great with CV19 precautions and so nice to sit outside and have a pint. Anyhow, started today. Decided to drop the posts 500 below the decking, batten and screw into the joists then shutter around that and pour in a cement and stone mix. Think it will withstand the winter gales. Two of the big corner posts in, two more then the wall plate and I’ll post more pictures then
Tennentslager
Okay, got out of the ground...next the roof. So, not sure of the correct terminology so I’ll make some up? I’m having a floating octagonal king post, fashioned out of a cut off of the big posts. I’m planning to make up the diagonal truss on the ground and offer it up to mark the birds tooth notch. Once that’s done, I’ll do two more and then pop it up in place. I will put in a centre post directly under the king post and screw home to keep everything supported. I also feel fairly confident about the standard rafters (from king post to the centre of the wall plate) but will be asking for help (thanks for the kind pm @Simon offering help) with the angle nightmare that is the jack rafters. Can I ask one thing? I plan to leave the rafter ends long and cut them after the roof frame is complete. Is this correct? Should I cut the diagonal rafters to the correct size (300mm overhang) or also leave them proud?
Declan52
These are both worth a watch. And this. Lots of very good roofing tips.
Simplysimon
hi @Tennentslager leave all rafters long, string line through when finished and then cut plumb and seat cuts.
Tennentslager
Did this after finishing work early... I’m happy so far, a couple of dodgy joins, can I use decorators caulk to fanny them up as it’s getting painted? Jack rafters still to do and think it’ll be Monday evening before I get a minute?? CC45
Looks tidy. Decorators caulk won't like any wet on it - its not silicone. What about some wood filler? https://www.screwfix.com/p/ronseal-high-performance-wood-filler-natural-550g/51811
Nickfromwales
Dec caulk will be fine if it's not in direct rainfall. If you use silicone you wont be able to use any water-based products thereafter. Prob best to paint it all up and look at whats left. If necessary, then choose a product to fill with, probably frame sealant would be best at that stage and is over-paintable when you tart it up next.. Tennentslager
No nonsense exterior frame filler from Screwy does it, 3.5 squid and one tube will cover a multitude of sins? I have a plan to measure/cut the jack rafters but I’ll holler if I get stuck oh and those videos are great @Declan52 but double Dutch mostly to me Canny quite beleive how strong it is, even with 4 rafters I could stand on it, with 8 it is solid Edited July 29, 2020 by Tennentslager
Onoff
Depending on the finish you go for you can get silicone to near match it. I got some maple coloured Mapei stuff before.
Tennentslager
Got a half day off so cracked on in the sun. I offered up the jack rafter, wee plate to hold in place and carefully marked and cut it. Once you’re doing it, it’s much easier to visualise than the videos One of my better joins ? Got the end plate on as it’s getting a mini gutter bingo bango...time for a wash and as it’s Friday Hello lovely
